As a pharmacist I regularly counsel expecting mothers to stop taking the benzo's and opioids. I would say that 90% of them don't either because they are addicted, don't believe me when I tell them about the adverse effects, or actually really need the medications. Although I get the feeling that most of them simply do not care, and rather take the drugs for their own benefit and their kids be damned. With that being said the withdrawal for a baby clinically dependent on opioids appears to have no long lasting affects.

My wife takes 10mg Opana 2x a day, and 15mg Roxicodone 3x a day. She has some kind of back problem and hip problem; I know her sacroiliac joint is badly damaged, but I'm not sure exactly what else is wrong. Anyway, we are trying to get pregnant now, and she already knows she's going to have to get off the meds once she gets pregnant. She's not looking forward to going through withdrawal (she's been on pain meds for 6 years now), but she's rather suffer than have our newborn suffer since she's, you know, an actual caring parent.

I would talk to your doctor, and have them work with the pharmacists to determine a taper schedule that would minimize withdrawal. If done correctly you can come off opioids with almost no withdrawal symptoms. With that being said her pain may still be an issue, but at least that will be the only down side.

man i even try not to take an aspirin, unless the pain is bad. I have seen people really close to me addicted to meds and they don't even know it. all they know is the "medicine helps" its a really sad situation.

I'm with you. To me it is a virtue to be conscious of how many milligrams of ibuprofen or aspirin I take. I have switched to arnica topical gel for minor pain. 1,200 milligrams is the max a person should take if necessary. 4,500 mg. is an overdose. I know someone who sometimes takes 6 to 8 800 mg. of ibuprofen in a 24 hour period.

Prescription drugs seem to be the new drug. Addicts call it, 'Doctor shopping' when they look for prescriptions. It's a way of life. I feel bad for their kids.

It's not really new. People have been doing this since the sixties. My mom and dad were both pill poppers back then. Prescription overdose is one of the top three killers now. I'm sure you know what the other two are.

Why is Florida always the epicenter of everything?
