I would be willing to bet that most teens have no idea that HPV exists.
zbeastSep 15, 2011
So people would rather worry about girls having sex than girls getting cancer.
That's it, stop the planet I want to get off.

I never have a problem with people facing the consequences of their actions. In fact I think the consequences are exactly how evolution works on humans. The ignorant and irresponsible do stupid things and some of them die or go sterile because of it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I thought going to HS leads to making phone calls that leads to socializing which leads to drinking beer which leads to sex which leads to smoking which leads to smoking pot which leads to coke which leads to crack and heroin.
So just don't send them to H.S. (right)

It all starts with breastmilk or formula ;)

Why in f**k's name would it? Do teenage girls really sit down and think to themselves, "Of all the potential STDs out there, and combined with the risk of pregnancy, there's only one thing I'm worried about which is preventing me from having sex, and that's the chance a disease will infect me without my knowledge and give me cancer decades later?" Teenage girls aren't worried about cancer decades later, you dumb f**ks, so why the f**k would a vaccine designed to prevent that have any bearing on their sex lives? I swear, the capacity for rational thought is severely dwindling in this country.
davidg11Sep 15, 2011
How about NOT telling teens what the vaccine is for?
Sheeeeeet....I don't recall knowing what half the shots I got for vaccines for growing up.
davidg11Sep 15, 2011
How many of you knew at 10 what the heck a DPT vaccination did?
Me neither. Hell I still don't know, or care, what Diphtheria is. But I took a damn shot for it!

That's nice, but the real issue is should the Government have the power to require that children attending a school be vaccinated against a behaviorally spread disease when the behavior that spreads it isn't allowed to occur at school in the first place? The mandate tells you everything you need to know about Rick Perry, just like the Mass. healthcare bill tells you everything you need to know about Mittens.
hillsfarSep 16, 2011
What's especially hypocritical - beyond the whole campaign contributions thing - is that Perry would mandate a vaccine that protects from HPV, but wouldn't mandate realistic and informative sex education and free condom distribution.
After all, if abstinence and waiting until marriage is all that is necessary to prevent teenagers having babies or getting STDs, then why would girls even need a vaccine to protect against HPV?

3-year olds want to play together; this happens before they attend school. Close contact with other 3-year olds leads to increasing the risk of contracting chicken pox, mumps or measles. Therefore, these diseases are behaviorly spread too. Are you saying that the MMR or varicella vaccines shouldn't be given to prevent these diseases too?
barackalypseSep 16, 2011
You missed the second part of what I said, namely that when the behavior that spreads the disease is prohibited and unlikely to occur in school, there isn't any need to require that vaccination. Things like measles are highly contagious through the type of contact that will be present in schools, therefore it is appropriate to make vaccination a requirement.
khundaveSep 16, 2011
yet you feel that the MMR vaccine is forced upon children.
barackalypseSep 16, 2011
It basically is, I don't know of many schools that allow unvaccinated children in. That said, I don't have a problem with them requiring it, and am vaccinated against it myself because the risk from the diseases is far greater than the risk from the vaccine. I expect as genertic testing evolves we will get even better at creating vaccines that have even less risks, or at least identify people likely to have a bad reaction to them.
khundaveSep 16, 2011
BTW - children run the risk of being sexually assaulted. Their rape is bad enough, but if their rapist is also infected with the HPV, then what do you say to them when 20 years down the road, a young woman is diagnosed with cervical cancer or a young man is diagnosed with throat cancer, which could have been prevented if they were vaccinated against that virus.
barackalypseSep 16, 2011
They run the risk of being shot and stabbed too, should all students be required to wear bullet and stab resistant clothing? We force vaccination because things like measles are likely to occur and spread rapidly with a bad outcome in schools compared to the side effects of vaccination. What are the odds of a student being raped by someone with HPV?
khundaveSep 16, 2011
Forced? So basically you seem to be offended by vaccination of any kind, even if the promotion of the general welfare outweighs some Randian obsession with individuality.
barackalypseSep 16, 2011
Please don't read into the word choice, I meant nothing by it and could have just as easily said "require". I have no problems with institutions requiring common sense measures like vaccination for MMR. The science is very clear, the risk is very low from vaccination, and rather high for the damage the diseases can do if you catch them. That said I don't get a yearly flu shot (I'm healthy, the flu isn't likely to kill me) and won't be vacinating myself against anything that I will likely not come into contact with.

this is a good result to teen

Of course. Autistic people do not have libido.
