Crude, blatant electioneering from a crude, blatant politician.
PuckDoctorsFeb 9, 2012
There's got to be a conspiracy theory here somewhere, no?
wjappeFeb 9, 2012
What if someone wants something on the moon named after Newt?
stuffradioFeb 9, 2012
:O
imayberight8Feb 10, 2012
Yea, and you've been trained by Conservative Fox News or Rush Limpdork, I'm guessing. Like Global Warming is a conspiracy, too, huh? What do all those reputable scientists have to gain by telling a lie to the whole world? 70 % of Europeans accept Climate change as a real problem that requires our immediate attention, mostly because they aren't constantly lied to by their news outlets. The Fairness Doctrine was a needed set of guidelines for honesty in news reporting, but the liars got rid of that in America. I give you Fox News, the only news station that makes viewers dumber, the more they watch it. Seven different studies have proven that people who get no news -are better informed than Fox News viewers. What would this country be like, if lying to the public were outlawed as a felony, tantamount to treason? A much better and friendlier place, I'd wager.

In order to move further out in space we need to develop the technology required to live in hostile environments. The moon is a good place to do just that and is relatively close enough for a rescue if things go wrong.
starmanjonesFeb 9, 2012
going back to the moon makes perfect sense. the idea shouldn't be dismissed just because the nutty professor knows that. he would be all about feeding the military industrial complex. we need to do better than that. to save ourselves from extinction we need lots of people living off the earth. that is what the mail goal should be.
casspaFeb 9, 2012
Why don't we just blow up the moon? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Csj7vMKy4EI
FetFotoFunFeb 9, 2012
Sure, take out the moon...it would take out humanity with it...but sure, blow up the moon...
freeformjazzFeb 9, 2012
I want to go to the moon.
rufiohoFeb 9, 2012

dance88Feb 9, 2012
I think we should all get to go there one day! :-)
cb810Feb 9, 2012
It is a crackpot idea to bring up on the campaign trail...
ridgerunner5Feb 9, 2012
Not really. Campaigning is all about promising everyone everything.
justinr93Feb 10, 2012
ya it kinda is when we have a huge debt that we can pay off and how we have to deal with problems around the world and pray we dont go to war with iran i think thats alot of money we could spend feeding and giving homes to the homeless
vanzant38Feb 10, 2012
I'm for any type of manned moon mission but the Grinch won't take us there. Not a chance. I have a better chance of jumping over my house than Newt backing and completing a program to take the US back to the Moon. If he would have said that he was going to shoot lightning out of his ass, I would of had the same reaction. It's just a gargantuan lie.
angrycat70Feb 10, 2012
No, it isn't a bad idea. The moon bears closer examination and exploration simply because it is easier to get to than deep space destinations. It would serve well as a test bed for technologies that would allow us to reach for more distant targets.
imayberight8Feb 10, 2012
Mankind will return to the Moon, commercially through private enterprise. There's gold, platinum, titanium, and other quite valuable stuff up there, heck, Saturn's largest moon, Titan has lakes made of crude oil. I'd hate to pay for a gallon of gas made from Titanic Crude, but it is there. Diamonds, gemstones, silver, water - every major element we find on Earth, is also out there on asteroids, moons, planets and comets. China will get to the Moon before NASA ever goes back, but Astronauts could hitch rides with American Companies on those commercial space craft, perhaps sooner than the Chinese. But to suggest a moon base before 2020 with taxpayer dollars, the Tea Baggers would surely obstruct any funding for such a rushed boondoggle. Ideally, an Earthbase with all major nations represented should eventually be built on the Moon, paid for by all mankind, not just one or two superpowers. The world is shrinking and we must adapt and come together, strength in numbers, and all that cooperation jazz. Much better than barbaric wars and killing in the name of some hokey religion twisted by overzealous fanatics. Maybe we should idolize scientists the way we idolize sports heros. Scientists may well save us from ourselves, whereas sports, well anyone for a soccer mob riot? Which is productive?
ano233Feb 9, 2012
Returning to the moon and setting up a decent outpost is a great idea. Encouraging private industry to take point is a risky route, but one that could pay off extensively in the long run. Thinking you're going to do it with only a small portion (10%) of NASA's budget is crazy talk. To have ANY chance you're probably talking a number $1 Billion dollar prizes (Space Launch System, Lunar Transfer Vehicle, Lunar Habitat, etc), to have a good chance you'd have to kick those prizes up to an average of $10 Billion each.
mogwuyFeb 9, 2012
This so is totally not worth it right now. We're still in debt and in a recession. That's what we should be focused on.
imayberight8Feb 10, 2012
DEBT? How bout some more jobs? That's way more important, tax dollars come from income taxes, people need jobs to earn income to be taxed. Simple. The debt would take care of itself if the idiot obstructionists would get on board with some concerted job creation efforts. Quit electing dorks who just make it more profitable for corporate dillholes to outsource all OUR jobs! The economy is starting to pick up, despite GOP efforts to stall it to make the President look bad. Good news for Obama's re-election.
dreamcoloFeb 9, 2012
Wanna make moon walk on the moon ;)
craig1958Feb 9, 2012
Assuming we want to spend resources on maned space flight, we have to decide if a moon base or a space station makes more sense as a starting point.
rudegarFeb 9, 2012
free beer for everybody on the moon!
Closed AccountFeb 9, 2012
David Bowie does not think so?
KapsiotFeb 9, 2012
Whoever colonizes the moon first is going to determine it's culture for the next 1000+ years. Just like Plymouth Rock. Do we really want a Chinese or Russian speaking moon?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bookantFeb 9, 2012
It doesn't matter what country they come from, considering the demographic I'm guessing the first moon colony will be speaking either Klingon or Elvish.
starmanjonesFeb 9, 2012
its not going to matter who paid for the colony... in fairly short order they will realize that their existence is greatly enhanced working together. there will be an incident of some sort and all the colonies no matter where they are from will form a government and that will be that.
CalTjaderFeb 9, 2012
Yes, a Ref**klican said it. End of story.
theonewhoknowsFeb 9, 2012
Yes. Only crackpots would go to the moon.
ridgerunner5Feb 9, 2012
Care to explain why?
theonewhoknowsFeb 9, 2012
Yes, but first I must explain irony...
