I know that an artificial tree is better for the environment, but buying an artificial one and then sticking one of those pine tree-smelling air fresheners amongst the branches just doesn't smell the same.

I got a real one and it smells great. It is grown on a tree farm. It is picked up, chopped into chips and used by the zoo for compost after the holiday. There are pine needles everywhere, however.

Real trees are actually the green way to go. Without a market for people to buy the trees, the farms would go out of business and all that beautiful land would go to something less sustainable, for sure.
To keep it nice and green, just make sure to ask the farm owner if the trees were grown in a sustainable way- without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Most artificial trees are thrown away after a few years, where they will rot in the landfill for thousands of years. Alternatively, a real Christmas tree gets turned into mulch or naturally degrades.

Maybe next year I can buy an artificial Christmas tree and be kind to our environment.
