That's wild business. I bet you there is some kinda government mind control s**t in there.
bjornskiJul 15, 2010
Actually, it's been used for years by hypnotherapists and people into the new-age movement.
vbullingerJul 15, 2010
So, does it actually _do_ anything? I mean, sitting around, real quiet, listening to anything will change your state of mind. But does this do anything different? Or is it all placebo effect?
bjornskiJul 15, 2010
That's like asking "does meditation do anything?"
It's subtle. There is a certain "feeling" you'll get, but it's not some overpowering "high" that hits you, and it doesn't always work right on everyone. Different people react to different frequencies, so it can be hit or miss.
vbullingerJul 15, 2010
I've never done any kind of illegal narcotic, and I don't even like taking headache medicine, and I don't even drink any more, but this I might try. Heck, 20 minutes at Aqua Massage (at the Mall of America, so you should try it, bjornski) really puts you in a different state (they put huge headphones on you and play like, Enya or something while you're getting it).
bjornskiJul 15, 2010
I'll have to try that out, it sounds awesome. Besides, I could use a good massage.
Have you tried meditation or anything? It's really kind of neat once you get your mind used to it. Here are a few pages with some neat audio bits and suggestions to start off with.
http://www.jetcityorange.com/meditation/
http://www.thethoughts.co.uk/thoughts/binaural-beats/
http://www.squidoo.com/learn-binaural-beat-meditation
http://musicmefree.com/
That's just a quick scan of stuff, but there are all sorts of binaural tracks to listen to. Some are more "music based" and some have suggestions to help with thing like smoking cessation. They won't MAKE you quit, but if you can let the messages soak in as you relax and just take it in, it can make coping with nicotine fits and stuff easier to deal with.
Get a good set of headphones, equipment DOES matter. Ear-buds will NOT give you the results you want. Get a set of headphones with a frequency range down to 20hz if you can.
Take it all with a grain of salt, but if you find a few tracks which help you relax, then even if you don't get any "effect" out of it, it was worth checking out.
pp7kJul 15, 2010
It's all complete crap, trust me. Any sort of "high" is entirely psychosomatic. Check out this non-alcoholic kegger prank, complete with puking and passing out...

I got about 10 seconds into that before I concluded it was a hoax, just like that "rainbow party" craze.
baconatoryJul 15, 2010
I don't know about all that. The report did mention "digital downloads" several times. Seems pretty serious to me. From now on I'm only going to download analogs and just play it safe until we know more about this.

This is a renaming of the last year's binaural beat hoax. Not as noxious as the Jenkem hoax (huffing fermented feces and urine) that took in schools, parents and police departments.
Listening to any music can bring about an altered mental state. That is indeed the purpose of music, be it country twang, hymns, symphonies, opera, or rock. That it causes opiate or hallucinogen like effects is nonsense.

Indeed. The supposed efficacy and "science" behind this has been repeatedly debunked. One of the skeptical podcasts I listen to addressed it last year:

With so much information freely accessible to people today, it seems like YouTube is the sole source to a lot of them.

This stuff is no joke my cousin Joey was hooked on this stuff, got messed up real bad and lost a lot of weight. Started having run ins with the law as he kept getting caught stealing batteries to fuel his habit. Even though he was only 13 his parents had to force him on to the streets as the cops couldn't do anything. Said there hands were tied, no law on the books about listening to an mp3. Pffft. If only they knew how it had wrecked the whole family. They told us if he got caught 5-6 more times shoplifting they could take him off the streets but by then it was to late. No one had seen joey for weeks, his parents were wracked with guilt but he had grown severally dangerous explosive. to this day we don't know where joey is we can only assume he's down by the docks with his 64mb creative mp3 player in a drug induced frenzy.
mbtriaJul 14, 2010
I am surprised that Joey has not yet killed his family, gone on a shooting, bombing and poison gas rampage at his ex-school, and wiped on the entire police force and swat team of his home county. We will be hearing this soon. We can only pray that the State National Guard can take him out.

Cool story, bro.
enjoiskating811Jul 15, 2010
My nephew Will had the same problem. At first we thought he was just going through puberty, but then he started hanging out with a rougher crowd, his grades started slipping, and he wasn't opening up to his parents as much at the dinner table. Eventually we found out it was i-dosing. This kind of thing was never a problem when I was growing up. My high school was very clean, drug wise that is, especially on the playground where I spent most of my days chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool and all shooting some b-ball outside of the school when a couple of guys, they were up to no good started making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my mom got scared she said "you're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air" I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said "Fresh" and had a dice in the mirror If anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought nah forget it, yo home to Bel-Air I pulled up to a house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabby "Yo, homie smell you later" looked at my kingdom I was finally there to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air.

Yeah, demons. The type of thing you hear liberals freaking out about all the time.
Maybe Bobby Jindal can exorcise those demons. And we can get Sarah Palin's witch-hunting priest to make sure the evil spirits are gone.

Also, what's great is notice the complete lack of any scientists in that interview? That's because There is no fact behind it...

bawbzillaJul 15, 2010
I've tried it personally, it's complete bulls**t EXCEPT for one of the doses. Gates of hades, was it?
Nah, don't get me wrong, it isn't about it ALTERING YOUR BRAINWAVES~ or anything, it's just something like 12 minutes of quiet droning that basically makes you fall asleep then it cranks it up and pulls this awful screeching noise that scares the s**t out of you. Yeah, of course it's going to make you feel like you're at the gates of hell, it's basically a youtube screamer video but 10x worse.
Any effect people say they have from listening to these things is completely in their head.
bjornskiJul 15, 2010
Not really, it does help you achieve a mental state. Just like light patterns, music or prayer can.
The hypnotic meditative ones are really nice. You can get a "power nap" in and feel completely refresh with them in like 10 minutes, they're wonderful. But then I've only seen them to be used for relaxing, and not some "drug" to get you high.
oea420Jul 15, 2010
Wow, binaural beats have been around FOREVER. There was even an old DOS program called Digital Morphine that would make binaural beats of different types...
There's even a program for windows that is still around, called BWgen (Brainwave generator) that has all kinds of different binaural beats.
These things actually do work, but not to the extent that these kids are experiencing it. You can use them to induce altered states of consciousness.. but it's not anything like a chemical, it's more like meditation than anything.

Binaural Beats
The science behind binaural beats: What they are, what they are claimed to do, and what they can actually do.
Today we're going to put on our headphones, kick back in the beanbag, and get mellow to the soothing sounds of the latest digital drug: binaural beats. These computer generated sound files are said to massage your brain and produce all sorts of effects, everything from psychedelic experiences to behavior modification. Let's point our skeptical eye at the science of binaural beats, and especially at some of the claims made for them.

Moms will be moms. The maternal instinct exhibited by most mothers has become incredibly irrelevant in most of America, but moms can't accept or even realize this because they're blinded by those instincts, and, rather unfortunately, they end up exhibiting these kinds of ridiculous behavior for lack of an appropriate outlet.
And there's nothing you can do about it!
It's wonderfully depressing, really.

I will gladly accept the most inane laws and extreme punishments for the people that Nancy Grace and Bill O' consider 'bad.' I will not stop until everything is made illegal and everyone is put in prison.
I will not, however, be caught dead paying attention to or being mindful of my children's activities. Also, I'm a f**king idiot because I think that you can get high from audio recordings.

It's the NBC affiliate in Oklahoma City. I firmly believe they are that dumb. You're talking about the #50-something TV market in the United States in a HIGHLY conservative area--all 77 counties in Oklahoma voted for McCain. But really, I don't care where you are, TV news is generally horrible. It's devolved into infotainment, where a sale at the local Piggly Wiggly is more newsworthy than public corruption occurring out in the open.
