FTA: "We all know living on a planet with “two suns and no women” would totally suck."
Most women don't want to be stuck on a planet with two suns without air conditioning.

Buy them a pink landspeeder and a droid that hands them their makeup and you'll see their minds change pretty fast.

FTA: "The star Betelgeuse is scheduled to erupt into a supernova in the very near future (potentially this year)."

And the idea that it's going to be a "second sun" has only met with derision from real astronomers. Mainly, it'll just be a brighter-than-normal star.

Be an interesting nova. The sun reaches its closest parallax to Orion around June appearing above Betelgeuse by only a few degrees. If it happened then, and if the nova was bright enough, you might see a twin sun effect in broad daylight. Not that Betelgeuse would look like a sun of course, just a very bright star. But I'm all for the romance of thinking that our Sun has a companion. :)
A winter nova might be better as it would show in perfectly dark skies and astronomers could obtain much better measurements. I haven't figured out yet if the full Moon nears Orion for any cool Moon-nova conjunction (although I believe the Moon would appear above it, up in Taurus). With the full moon much dimmer than the sun, a nova conjunction would be very well balanced.
