Fortunately, I don't suffer from insomnia but cherry juice sounds like it may help my battle with constipation. Talk about stress!
sublimin4lAug 4, 2010
Thing is, I dislike the taste of cherries. Back to my method of vodka..
protodonAug 3, 2010
Eww, cherry juice. Why can't it be cranberry juice...or morphine?
reddfoxx1562Aug 4, 2010

Microsoft is partnering up with Big Cherry to bring your favorite sweet fruit to your favorite search engine -- Bing Cherry!

F**K THE NCC!
bicolanoAug 3, 2010
I'll have to try this. Another medicinal use for cherry juice is treatment for gout. It's a good alternative to taking a medication like Allopurinol. If you have raw cherries available at your local grocer, supposedly the darker Bing cherries are better than the Rainier for lessening the inflammation. Worth a try if you or someone you know is suffering from gout. Either way, you get to eat/drink something tasty.

"In other words, insomniacs drinking the cherry juice woke up less frequently during the night. However, cherry juice did not diminish the amount of time it took participants to fall asleep."
Its isn't the breakthrough people were hoping for.
spectecjrAug 4, 2010
Try this instead:
Take 1 aspirin.
Take 1 antihistamine (eg. Alavert/Claritin - not Benadryl, which will put you to sleep)
Wait 10 minutes.
Take 300mg Nicotinic Acid (Vitamin B3, Niacin. Note you will NEED to make sure it's the Nicotinic acid form; no other form will do.)
Take 1500mg L-Tryptophan.
Drink a glass of water. Wait 15 minutes. You're welcome.
(The B3 kicks the Tryptophan down the biochemical pathway which converts Tryptophan->Serotonin->Melatonin; it has to be nicotinic acid, or else your body won't recognize it as having enough B3, and will instead throw it down the synthesis/scavenger pathway B6 + Tryptophan -> Niacin. The aspirin and anithistamine are to prevent flushing reactions, which some people find pleasant, but other just find make them itchy. You'll know when it kicks in; you'll feel happy as a clam.
Oh, and unlike taking (say) 5-HTP or Melatonin directly, this actually gets converted on site in the brain from Tryptophan->Melatonin, so it works much better. [it's also MUCH safer than 5-HTP, which can wreak havok on your body, because your body has no way of limiting the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin, so it happens all over, fast, and can cause nausea, diahrrea and tachycardia]).
reddfoxx1562Aug 4, 2010
I think the point of simple, moderate fixes like "drink cherry juice!!!" is to avoid having to get your journeyman's in alchemy. f**k.
spectecjrAug 4, 2010
True.... but the difference being that I can tell you the reason this works... I'm not so sure about the cherry juice solution :)
I could have just told you to take an aspirin, B3, and some tryptophan.
Heck, I could have told you to have a chicken sandwich before bed. Sure, it /might/ work. It has all the right bits and pieces... but in nowhere near the concentration to work even remotely reliably.

I'll take what I can get. If I could actually sleep soundly, that would be an amazing improvement to my life. Now to find some tart cherry juice w/o a ton of sugar...
mhf03Aug 4, 2010
Yea, I suffer from insomnia and I was hoping this cherry juice would help me fall asleep right away. It always takes hours for me to fall asleep. Today I finally fell asleep at 5am.
analogassassinAug 4, 2010
I don't have trouble falling asleep, it's staying asleep. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and eat. Not good! So this is worth a try, at least for me.
ciliciousAug 3, 2010
I like cherries as it is--and I have trouble with insomnia.
I'm going to try it. I've had some limited success with valerian, more with melatonin.
I'm not crazy about OTC stuff, let alone prescription drugs.
And a good night's sleep from just cherry juice would be cool.
captspauldingAug 3, 2010
I'd like to recommend whiskey.

bobby1978Aug 4, 2010
Well popping cherries at bedtime usually results in a good nights sleep, so it's not surprising that drinking the lovely juice should work similarly.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
whiskeythievesAug 4, 2010
Have you seen cheery juice in local supermarket lately?
smileylichAug 4, 2010
melatonin is a wonderful thing; I take 0.5 or 1 mg of it and I'm out within the hour, regardless of how "wired" or "racing thoughts" I am.

This article is great and I want to give it a try. I don't feel any fear on trying this because this a fruit.I'm scared taking up medicines for the reason that it may have a side effects towards my body.
rejuvemedspaAug 5, 2010
Megan, you are not only one to be scare by taking up medicines, there are many people who don't like this :). I have heard that when one consume tart cherries regularly then it help in regulating the body’s natural sleep cycle & in enhancing the sleep efficiency, which involves decreasing the time it takes to fall asleep.
