One of the reasons I save vacation time is in case something unexpected comes up, such as an illness, a death in the (extended) family. I want to be there for that person. On the other hand, I have worked with people who blow through their time, using it to have every other Friday off, or they just can't live another day without some vacation. What happens when those people REALLY need the time? They send out an email saying they have no remaining time and hope their coworkers will donate some of their time. Sorry, you shouldn't have been spending all your vacation as soon as it came in. Some places, will allow you to roll those extra hours into one nice bonus. Are you not able to do that? How about taking a really nice month long vacation with all the time you have to take off then? Enjoy your job and you won't need all those minivacations.

Have you ever heard of FMLA? It's the Family Medical Leave Act, and it guarantees that if you or a member of your family has a medical emergency that necessitates your absence from work, you will not lose your job or your pay. At my job, illnesses or family emergencies over about 3 days in length are considered for FMLA, and our managers are required to ask us about applying for the benefit if we need to be out.

I took my first vacation in 3 years beginning of last month, even then it was a partial vacation. With the dwindling workforce, and the added responsibility, it's even tougher now a days to take an extended vacation. I took a sick day last week and was inundated with emails from users with issues.

I could use another vacation... (or just retirement).
