stoanhartAug 4, 2010
You know the aversion to this is just a social/psychological thing. There are cultures where eating bugs is considered fine. I'm sure if insect protein ended up as a filler in, say, McDonald's patties, most people wouldn't really notice, and if it tasted fine, they probably wouldn't care.
wilcocolaAug 4, 2010
It would be better than the stuff already filling your mcdonalds patty dude. Google: "ammonia treated pink slime" or "meat products, inc." for some 'juicy' reading indeed =)
nyx210Aug 4, 2010
You assume that McDonald's isn't already adding grub protein to its food.
huttymcphooAug 4, 2010
@wilcocola... Or you could visit Snopes.com and find out that most of that stuff that's out there about what's supposedly in McDonald's in complete BS.
leemapleAug 4, 2010
If you eat fast food theres a good chance you eat bugs.
ckhhrryissAug 4, 2010
Yeah, the bugs are survivors, so by eating them we'll become survivors too.
winklemanAug 4, 2010
It does make sense.. we will never run out of insects. Just think of them as "the shrimp of the land".
diggnanAug 5, 2010
I hate insects! Funnily, I've always thought of shrimp, lobsters and crabs as the 'insects of the sea'...which is why I won't eat them, no matter how much people try to get me to. I love fish however.

But I'm sorry I would take up eating "long pork" long before I would make a standard meal out of bugs.

quietsykoAug 4, 2010
I've eaten chocolate covered leafcutter ants, and they were actually pretty tasty. Sort of like salted popcorn with an indescribable aftertaste. Plenty of protein, limited fat, all good for you. Once you get past the initial 'holy f**k I am eating a giant f**king ant covered in chocolate' shock, it's just like eating any other food item.
babywookieAug 4, 2010
I don't see anything wrong with eating bugs. They are good protein!

Iron is high in iron, but we don't eat that.
quietsykoAug 4, 2010

babywookieAug 4, 2010
Umm... Unlike bars of irons, bugs are actually chewable, digestible and most of them are non-toxic.
coachmcguirkAug 4, 2010
My point is that just because they are good protein doesn't mean that we need to run out and eat them up. I get plenty of protein WITHOUT eating bugs.
If you can't get the correlation of my comment to that point, sorry.

ABOUT TIME.
Insects are highly nutritional, mature quickly, and reproduce in abundance. For example, finding a way to farm ants or beatles efficiently would provide more food with less resources than Beef or Pork could ever hope to achieve. There's no reason why we shouldn't be eating insects. Good for the environment, and good for you!
pharmaphoxAug 5, 2010
Man, screw you and your undeniable logic!
dusanmalAug 4, 2010
As with vegetarians this is yet another feeding strategy that is proven failure in humanoid evolution. There was a humanoid branch that attempted life strategy of eating primarily insects. They got extinct. Enough said. If someone wants to personally use feeding strategy that have evolutionary fail - that is fine, you are free to repeat it. Suggesting it for whole human population is a death wish. We are who we are because we ate meat and benefited of positive feedback: eating more meat->larger brain->able to eat even more meat.... Strong scientific agreement on that.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
shinpahAug 4, 2010
I'm pretty sure bugs qualify as meat
Closed AccountAug 4, 2010
"Meat" is the edible flesh of any animal. Insect meat is still meat.
firebat9erAug 4, 2010
Bugs provide similar nutrients for growing a large brain. They have lots of proteins.. no different than your classic meats.. We just decided to go the way of large animals instead of bugs when we got out of hunter-gatherer mode. You don't think there is any problem with our current agricultural system? Just wait for the evolutionary fail of humanity when our industrial overkill farming of livestock and corn pollutes and sterilizes our once fertile land, then you will find us digging for bugs once more.
It is an excellent idea but sounds very unappetizing to me.
How is vegetarianism a fail? It is a very healthy life style, but you also need your proteins to be healthy. A doctor doing a CT scan on a 60 year old can tell if you were a vegetarian because your insides are in much better shape than a meat eaters. A better solution to our current agricultural problems would in fact be a heavier diet of fruits and vegetables. Feeding cows gives you horrible return of energy. Classic biology class lesson: If your stuck on an island and have a pile of grain and a few chickens you will not last very long if you try to feed the chickens grain and eat the eggs. You are better off eating the grain your self and getting 100% of the grain's energy.
nidstylesAug 4, 2010
They went extinct? I thought I saw an Asian the other day, and the majority of them do survive on eating insect's. Never been to Thailand I take it?
aplusjimagesAug 5, 2010
Hate to break it to you, but vegetarians are still around. So much for your so called science.
tempest69Aug 5, 2010
The problem is going to be boiling down to this-- China and India are becoming more affluent, that's 2 billion more folk that are going to be clamoring for meat. That changes the game, Having a decent steak cost $15-25 a pound is going to change American dining habits.
Right now most of the world is vegetarian.. Pretending that not eating meat will be the end of us all is sad.
But as meat is still cheap, I'll enjoy the marinated London broil cooked to medium rare.

Vegetarianism is a completely viable diet for people of all genders, ages and races.
For more information, check out's ADA's position on vegetarianism:
http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/2009_ADA_position_paper.pdf
demiurgencyAug 4, 2010
You'll be buried to oblivion here for promoting vegetarianism.
While I am very pro-vegetarian, I recognize that it's not a viable option for 100% people. People with gluten, or worse soy, allergies can find it very difficult to sustain themselves on a vegetarian diet. As do people who suffer from anemia.
Exceptions aside, most people can live a healthier life on a vegetarian diet. Good luck telling people here that.
covertbadgerAug 5, 2010
It's nothing to do with whether or not it's viable. I probably have 3 or 4 meat-free days a week on average, but I'd never consider going vegetarian. Give up beef? Pig products? Not happening.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bennoAug 4, 2010
I eat a vegetarian diet and I'm allergic to soy. I think a soy allergy is indirectly good for you (meat eater or not) since the majority of junk food has soybean oil, soy lecithin, or soy flour.
nidstylesAug 4, 2010
Except it lack's the nutritional flexibility required to remain human. Most of the Vegetarian's I know suffer from erratic behavior, and lack of cognitive flexibility. The nutritional value just isn't there in the plant form for human's. After all the evolution into what we are today was prompted by the inclusion of meat in our diet's.
aplusjimagesAug 5, 2010
I'm calling bulls**t. I'm Vegan and know a lot of vegetarians, none of which suffer from erratic behavior or lack cognitive flexibility. Now I'm not saying these people you know don't suffer from those ailments, but unless you're their doctor and nutritionist then you have no idea what's causing those issues.

I'm ashamed to admit that making that into a product and selling it has crossed my mind. Look at the protein (and complete protein to boot) to cost ratio - it's hard to argue with that.

When I was at this fancy restaurant in China, the free appetizer there was, believe it or not, deep-fried larva. And believe it tasted pretty good. To be exact, it tasted exactly like deep fried crisp (like the skin of Sweet and Sour Chicken, but crispier). Now, I don't expect to eat insects everyday, but its always nice to try new things and tackle cultural taboos.
milkmageAug 4, 2010
what? fry the s**t out of it?
igotalottastuffAug 4, 2010
Pretty much, I expected some sort of liquid to squirt inside my mouth when I bit into it, but instead it was hallow. Seriously, I dunno if the chef gutted the larva's inners out (highly doubt it), or if the deep frying really took a toll on its anatomy.
