Art is in the eye of the beholder which is why I almost failed my poetry class in college because my interpretations were different than my professors.
After (re)watching on Hulu, I swear to god I was thinking the exact same thing. I was like, "Great, Now I watch fiction, and here it is... in complete factual form."
Kinda got me a little excited to be honest.
'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.'
'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.'
'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.'
I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well.
So you disagree with Russia's communism 50 years ago, SplashBot? That's quite the radical stance. How do you feel about Hitler? I've heard conflicted things, so I'd like to hear your expert view on this controversial subject.
I don't understand why people steal rare paintings. It will be almost impossible to find a buyer on the black market. Who is going to buy a painting from someone when they know it's stolen. The buyer can't show it off to anyone, if anyone sees it they can tip off the police and the painting would be confiscated. Basically anyone who buys a stolen painting is just giving their money away.
What if you live in Brazil or any other south american country where officials can be bribed and you can have your own army for cheap. Highly doubt a drug cartel would turn it into the police.

I must be in the wrong profession.

The daily mail is crap. There are many many better news websites out there. Why must the daily mail constantly make it to FP?
People digg BBC if you want to digg a British news source not the dailymail.
hipmanAug 22, 2010
What part of that article was "crap"?.
Closed AccountAug 22, 2010
The part where it's written by the Daily Mail.
Seriously though, they are notoriously known in the UK as a dirty tabloid.

Aside from that, I don't know why anyone even buys a 50M painting in the first place.

From the pic, I'd say it's not even a Van Gogh. There's a reason we've never seen this painting. It's pretty bad.
rhawk187Aug 22, 2010
From the headline I had assumed they had gotten away with it. Glad to see they were caught.
artreproductionAug 23, 2010
Very glad that the thieves were caught and the painting recovered, great art should be availible to everyone!
