She didn't let her condition get the best of her. I went to the same middle school & high school as her, she seemed to be happy and had a lot of friends. She used to be a cheerleader and I think now she's a motivational speaker or something.

Has the UK decided to be as arrogant as the US and drop metric?
altorJun 28, 2010
Arrogance doesn't come into it, the US never adopted the metric system. Stupidity, that's what it is.
maynardjkJun 29, 2010
We don't use metric just because it pisses you off.

Stone should stop being used. It's as ridiculous as Fahrenheit.
They both make the rest of world die a little inside.
trainofthought6Jun 28, 2010
Like Celcius is any better? Both are arbitrary compared to Kelvin.
aeroboyJun 28, 2010
TrainOfThought:
Kelvin is just as arbitrary as Celsius, in fact it uses the Celsius as it's base, since 1 Celsius difference is equal to 1 Kelvin difference.
And Celsius is much simpler: 0 was the freezing point of water, 100 was it's boiling, and everything else was adjusted to that. Any person familiar with the Celsius scale knows that, but I'm not sure the users of the Fahrenheit scale can explain off the top of their heads how the 0 point was determined, or how the unit was determined/defined.
daltonzJun 28, 2010
Kelvin is not as arbitrary as Celsius :/ 0 Kelvin is absolute zero. That's the most logical starting place possible. At best you can say the size of the increment is arbitrary, but the size of the increments, be it one degree F or one degree C, doesn't really matter.
shillabusJun 29, 2010
The Rankine scale actually uses absolute zero as its zero point but uses the degree Fahrenheit as its increment.
kwcarpenterJun 30, 2010
Celsius and Fahrenheit both have good reasons for using them. Celsius makes sense in its 0° freezing point and 100° boiling point, but the Fahrenheit scale is good for not having negative numbers in commonly-occurring temperatures. I live in Missouri, and seldom is it below 0 (except a few days each winter) or above 105.
For you Celsius-types, that is -17.8 to 40.6.

happyimbecileJun 28, 2010
1. This is an extremely rare condition
2. Most people are fat because they lack self-control. Most fat people simply eating less food (like, 50% less) would solve tons of the obesity problems.
3. Genetics do play a role, but in 99.9% of obese people, it's not playing nearly as big a role as lifestyle choices like inhaling cake and sitting in front of a TV all day.

Gotta call BS on this one. She's from Austin, Texas, which last I checked, was in the USA. They quoted her as saying the following:
"I eat small portions of crisps, sweets, chocolate, pizza, chicken, cake, doughnuts, ice cream, noodles and pop tarts all day long, so I get pretty upset when people accuse me of being anorexic."
Americans don't call potato chips "crisps", that's British English. The headline got me to click the link, but after reading the article, I'm saying it's made up.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
gneissisniceJun 28, 2010
But the article is in the Telegraph. Perhaps they translated her words in British so the Brits would be able to understand it better. They wouldn't use stones as a weight measurement either, we use pounds.
chrispix99Jun 28, 2010
Maybe the translated her quote since it is from a UK site?
happyimbecileJun 28, 2010
As posted above: http://www.aboutlizzie.com/
It's not a BS story, they probably just changed "chips" to "crisps" for their own paper, genius.
musicmagiJun 28, 2010
or you could just be an idiot. Either-or.

This makes sense but I think you have forgotten to take into account the fact that sarcasm is implied through the use of an altered and detectable intonation in the voice, which is impossible to communicate via text.
Had sTiKyt meant to imply a sarcastic tone of voice through the use of text, he could have used the irony mark (⸮) developed in the late 19th century by the French poet Alcanter de Brahm, the more recently developed SarcMark (http://imgur.com/6zaTS.jpg), or the simple forwardslash-s symbol (/s) which is usually placed two lines below the comment and has become a standard in the Digg community as a method of implying a sarcastic statement and preventing confusion to other users as per sTiKyt's comment.
If we were to assume your method of simply judging ourselves whether or not a comment was sarcastic, there would be much confusion over ambiguous comments. Some users may assume a comment is sarcastic while others may think otherwise. And some comments which may appear to imply a strong sense of seriousness may in fact be sarcastic instead. Who is to say my original reply to sTiKyt wasn't a sarcastic one? Perhaps it appears that I was being serious but maybe in nature, my thoughts translate into words through twisted, poetic metaphors and you would never know that because you don't know how I think. This is why it is unsafe to judge someone's tone of voice through text. There are people in this world that are stupid enough to write something as ignorant as sTiKyt's comment with complete seriousness (see YouTube) so I think it's safer to stick to a standard of communication before we start judging people through what they write on the internet.
tl;dr: use /s next time.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
meribianJun 28, 2010
