I'd be afraid to go into the supermarket. As it is when I go in for milk and bread, I come out with over $100. worth of groceries!
doctechnicalAug 15, 2010
Protip: don't shop when you're hungry.

Electric cars have no place in this world until they solve the range and recharge time problem.
But Digg's mimosa-sipping bisexual emo types will circle jerk eachother over these puny failmobiles until they get their banana payout!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The word "troll" is even in your name, fail.
arpadAug 15, 2010
Too bad he's right then, hey?
Spain thinks so highly of TH!NK cars that they plan to sell 2,000 of them this year. So far, fifteen. Not fifteen hundred but fifteen to date in 2010. Oh, set the world on fire, baby!

Depends on what you think a car is for. I could see having an electric car for everyday purposes (going to work, dinner, etc.) and then renting a gas car for when you are going on vacation. Or just having two cars - many families have multiple vehicles already.
If/when wireless charging technology comes to maturity, we could imagine having charging stations in parking spaces in every major city.
boneheadfarkerAug 15, 2010
If wireless charging technology comes to maturity, we could probably have them set up along roads and highways so you'd never need to stop to recharge.
amaoicanAug 15, 2010
Good thinking. Not sure how you would monetize it though. I suppose you could make it a public service.
whiteninjachildAug 16, 2010
thats a big if/when I think that ill just use the ol' gas-powered car until the convenience levels are a little closer to matching up. Oh! also till you can give electric cars more power, prove that co2 is killing the ozone and make them more comparably priced.
p.s. if you could find the time i would like to know where you plan on storing all the battery waste.

Who pissed in your oatmeal this morning?
ssomu007Aug 15, 2010
Supermarket is for goods, milk, clothes, etc. but not place for electric cars.

30 years ago a South African department store included Toyotas as part of their merchandise. Tony Factor infuriated the South African Toyota Company by importing them from Japan and selling them cheaper than the locally built models at his chain of Downtown stores.
zenmojoAug 15, 2010
Best Buy sells electric scooters right in the front of the store in some places in Los Angeles. I thought it was weird, but the prices were pretty decent.
Plus, it's an impulse buy if you took the bus to get there and you need to carry your widescreen home.
eurynom0sAug 15, 2010
I somehow doubt you're bringing your 50" plasma home on a scooter.
fuzzybeardAug 15, 2010
Never mind getting it through the front door, either.
fredhagAug 15, 2010
Better color than to mention Sam's, etc., would be for the story would be to recall people that one could buy one of Henry Ford's cars through Sears & Roebuck.
fuzzybeardAug 15, 2010
They could also buy entire house kits as well. I've got a reprint of a 1903 Sears, Roebock, & Co. catalog in my library; makes for some fun and interesting reading!
NOTE: library != bathroom in my case.

FTA: "They produce zero local emissions and have three times the energy efficiency of a traditional car. "
Can someone explain to me what "energy efficiency" means in this context? It *can't* mean energy-to-weight ratio....
rapaxAug 15, 2010
I basically means how much of the initial energy available is used for the prime purpose (in this case, moving the car and whatever it's carrying). With an internal combustion engine, a lot of the energy that is freed in the chemical reaction of burning petrol turns directly into heat, noise, etc.
With an electric car, most of the energy that you get from the redox reaction in the battery goes directly into moving the wheels. There's hardly any energy lost to noise (from the engine that is) and only comparatively little is wasted as heat.
doctechnicalAug 15, 2010
That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

Cashier: That'll be $20,170.72 for your groceries and car
Customer: But I have a club card, do I get any discounts?
Cashier: Yes you received about $4 in discounts for your grocery items
Customer: But no discount for the car?
Cashier: No ma'am
Customer: Then I don't want it.
Cashier: I apologize, but voiding a car purchase requires a manager to come to the register.
*3 minutes of no manager*
Customer: I'll just take the car
Cashier: Credit or debit?
Customer: Credit.
Cashier: Here's your receipt, have a nice day.

I just visited Switzerland...the cell phone I used was run by Migros. The electronics stores, department store, clothing store, and supermarket...yeah those were Migros too. I'm not sure if they're monopolizing, but they sure have their foot in every door.
rapaxAug 15, 2010
They're quite big, but not really monopolizing; not that they don't want to, of course. We have quite effective checks in place against effective monopolies, and they always have an eye on Migros.
kreneskypAug 15, 2010
uh, the costco I shop at always a car on display out front. They change the offer/model every month.
