Just about anything in the mother's environment can have an effect on children. Good and bad.

This all seems logical.

It's funny how things like this can affect you...

In a related story... Things that make it into your body may actually affect your health.
Sigh.
Seriously people, anyone who considers themselves educated should know that the fetal environment and it's later development are intrinsically related. Why is this news?

what are you sighing about? the article is implying that exposure to environmental toxins in utero would be a good thing, in that the resulting person would be less likely to have respiratory conditions like asthma and allergies.
littledougJul 14, 2010
... This article says something that has been a well-documented phenomena for a long time.
The reason allergies, asthma, and autoimmune conditions in general are on the rise is because of the Suburban Bubble and the way it let's us avoid pathogens. Then when we are exposed to them later, we are unable to fight them appropriately.
That study was released almost 15 years ago. My point was that this is KNOWN, not that it is good or bad.

it drives me crazy when media outlets extrapolate dramatically from small, limited studies. some mice are exposed to toxins in a lab setting and we wonder whether the results would hold true for humans. but human children born to mothers who live in urban settings where diesel exhaust and other pollutants are present are more likely to have respiratory ailments like asthma and allergies. correlation? causation? who cares, let's write a catchy headline!
"More than 8.5% of children in the United States have been diagnosed with asthma. ...The rate soars to 25% to 40% among some populations of urban children."

So the advantages of NOT frantically wiping down your child with disinfectant also applies to in the womb.

This study by Johns Hopkins shows it isn't just allergens we need to be concerned with. The study included over 300 newborns and found toxins in over 99% of them at birth!
