What, not eating everything that everyone else eats is not a mental disorder--it's a choice. Damn, sickologists and their damn book of ever changing definitions.
:/
duconihilumJul 7, 2010
Well, at the very least /she/ pathologizes it herself.
dibbkdJul 7, 2010
It's also called bad parenting. Parents should give their kids a lot of different foods to eat. And not junk. I have a friend who eats tacos with no cheese, hamburgers with no ketchup, and a lot of other odd stuff.

hamburgers without ketchup i odd?
IllBeBackJul 7, 2010
So if others do not eat the foods in the combinations you deem normal that translates to bad parenting?
I don't like ketchup either, but I do like marinara sauce, for example.
Variety and choice is what makes life interesting.
spacejackJul 7, 2010
NOOOO you only like different foods than me because you're SICK or DEFICIENT in some way.
Do you enjoy the ice in your drink? IRON DEFICIENCY. That's why you like it. I had a snotball chick tell me that with a completely straight face the other day.
rglarson13Jul 7, 2010
Well, it may not be a debilitating pathology, but it's an unreasonable mental hangup that's creating social anxiety...
rainglobuleJul 7, 2010
That aren't talking about people who just eat weird foods, it becomes a disorder when it is having a negative impact on your life and you can't stop. If you are near 40 and french fries, pizza and cookies are the *only* foods that you eat it also becomes a serious health concern and can be classified as a disorder.

smemilyJul 7, 2010
It's also annoying as f**k. Not talking someone who doesn't like 1 or 2 foods, but people that seriously won't try any new food, don't like colored veggies, don't like anything on their pizza, etc blah blah? I'm not cooking for them. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Then don't? They don't want what you're serving anyway...
foxtrotyankeeJul 8, 2010
Well, I'm heartbroken that I'd never be able to eat your lousy cooking.
The worst thing in the world for me is to have someone insist on cooking me a meal as if they're doing me some grand favor. Then I have to uncomfortably sit and look at whatever nasty thing (that they think is FANTASTIC) they've made and try to politely not eat it.
But you can't politely not eat it. If I try it and gag (which I probably will), they'll get insanely offended. If I try to politely say no, then I'm an assh**e for not "trying new food".
f**k you. I know what foods make me sick. I can usually tell from the smell.
Do you think that your cooking is that much of a gift that someone who doesn't enjoy food in general is going to be distraught because you won't cook for them?
susaluda28Jul 7, 2010
It's not a f**king choice. If you had to live with this hell everyday of your life worrying what you're going to eat everyday and when you would not be so ignorant to say it's a choice.

In third world countries poor people who are barely able to meet their food requirement are not picky at all. Picky eaters need to be slapped around a bit and experience hunger for once.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
duconihilumJul 7, 2010
You could say that someone with any eating disorder should be 'slapped around a bit' because they don't understand the plight of those starving in the world.
I'm not saying that this should necessarily classify as a mental disorder, but the entire point of a mental disorder is that it's debilitating to the person who has it. She didn't choose this, and it's causing her some mental anguish.

Mustard and mayo are just wrong. I want to burn down every restaurant that serves their burgers with 'em on it, especially if they're not listed as ingredients.
I especially hate places that use mustard or mayo-based "special sauces" and when you ask for no mustard or mayo, they say "We don't have any of that on our burgers," and think it's OK because they premixed the mustard with ketchup (I'm looking at you, Burger Baron) or added some chipotle sauce in the mayonnaise.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

teh_techieJul 7, 2010
You don't have to enjoy every food in existence... but it's a problem if you only eat, say, 4 of the infinite number of foods on the planet, and that's it.
llanowarJul 7, 2010
I'm a picky eater. Though for some it might be a mental disorder, in general it's probably simply a taste/smell disorder.
I can smell nearly nothing, and with that most food tastes gross to me.
Yes, this is something that would make you want to avoid dinners just to avoid the complications of having to be picky about everything and letting the hosts know you don't like their foods.
So, they should really stop trying to put anything as some type of mental disorder. Anything beyond the set norm is a mental disorder now, which is quite annoying and could prove very problematic. For some hearing they got a mental disorder is not a road to fixing it but rather a road to despair, specially if the disorder is made up to accommodate the unusual.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

And you know what? Picky eating brats get over it. Kids who really hate it just don't eat it. Labeling it a disorder will just give wussy parents an excuse.

News flash: Peeps are different from each other. Me personally, I'm a "picky" eater because to me a lot of foods do not taste good to me, therefor I do not eat them. Imagine that? (Note: I will eat whatever if I'm a guest, but if I have my pick, pizza, chicken, burgers, and hot dogs it is!)
kkosinskJul 7, 2010
This is a disorder because if these people are guests they won't eat "whatever;" they probably would skip the event just to avoid eating. If they do go, they would lie about why they are not eating. That is what makes it a disorder.

I can't eat fast food such as McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys, etc without wanting to puke my ass off. Thank goodness for this mental disorder!
Seriously though - this has to be a women's "disorder". I knew a girl who pretty much had that first diet from the article, and refused to eat or try anything else. I knew another who would really only eat fast food, and especially wouldn't eat rice because it looked like maggots. Same goes for beers- I really don't know a single girl who can stand dark beers (except one, and aweomely- shes hot, too!). Really, females are the only ones who don't grow out of their "mental disorder".
As a child, I was picky, too. As I got older and especially once I got to college- I took what I can get. After, I started traveling alot and that was the best part- trying new foods that looked nasty. Surprisingly, some of the most obscure foods are some of the most delicious.
Today, I really prefer the more obscure and healthier foods only because they tend to have more flavor and aren't bland "average Joe" continental American food. When you're trying new foods whenever possible, it makes for all foods (including the "average" foods) to taste good every time you eat them as you don't get jaded.
I can't imagine having a 10-food diet and ever taking a first bite at the meal and thinking, "woa!! THIS IS AMAZING!" You'd think after like 25 years of that diet, something might click in the woman's mind- "you know, I'm bored with this same old s**t. Time for a change!"Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
darwininmotionJul 7, 2010
I ate everything and anything when I was really little, now I'm "picky". It's not necessarily consistent though, ie. not a texture thing or a taste thing, but some strange combos. I can't eat spicy food, it reacts in horrible horrible ways, so I do eat things plain but then turn that on it's head and love salty or vinegary things. My husband says I should come with a reference manual.
random12345Jul 7, 2010
Not liking spicy foods is understandable.. its not mental, it just f-en hurts. Its suppose to. I like spicy foods to an extent.
Its the people who simply refuse to try new foods because, "eewwww its bad!"
"well, have you tried it?"
"no, but i can just tell!"
rattusrattusJul 7, 2010
I think your assessment of women has more to do with your circle of friends than women themselves. In Pittsburgh, most of the women drink whiskey, dark beer, and bitter hoppy ones as well (although that's a given). Personally, I'm a fan of Victory Storm King, Stone's Russian Imperial Stout, Flying Dog's Gonzo Porter, and Dogfish Head's Brown Ale. Additionally, most of the picky eaters I know are men. In fact, they may all be men. I was at a friend's house and this guy was going on and on about how he hates "canned mayonnaise." He meant jarred, but after he said it 20 times I had to make him clarify, as I was wondering about the existence of such a thing. I don't know how you could even discern the difference between two. He also didn't like onions. Raw onions, okay I can see people not liking those, but caramelized they're a great seasoning.
glassagateJul 7, 2010
I'm a bit uneasy with calling it a mental disorder. The next thing that may come is a pill
for it.
One thing to think about is that lots of things were once called mental disorders,
but they have lost the title long ago. "Female hysteria" is one, I think. Don't
know what it is? Look it up. Also, "gender confusion" was once considered one.
I think that the mainstream medical community had dropped the term by the
1970's, or was it the 1950's? Before they did, there were some terrible things done
to the LGBT community. "Got a daughter who is a tom boy? I'm certain that
a days worth of electroshock treatment will help with that."
Of course, with that last one, many are still holding onto it, people like
"Professor" George Alan Rekers. Of course, everyone knows what happened
to him: he failed to cure himself. No, not really. He heavily advocated that
homosexuality could be cured, that it wasn't genetic, but, like so many others
doing the same thing, ended up being a closet case.

I know that's not really the same thing, but this is: My sister has 4 kids. 3 eat normally. One will only eat noodles with butter, or bagels with butter, cereal and milk, she only drinks water, etc. They were all raised in the same house by the same person. Since I was a teenager, I've simply said "It's not your food or the cooking... I'm just a picky eater." I got sick of hiding it/lying about it from about age 14!
Even today, I just say I'm horribly picky but I'll manage. Of course, I can generally find 1 thing on the menu that I'll mostly eat (though not always). Once on a vacation in New Zealand, a friend requested that a restaurant serve me an adult sized child's meal (as it was an Indian place with nothing on the menu remotely appetizing save the kids meal nuggets which sounded edible). I was simply going to have drinks but my friend insisted and apart from being somewhat awkward I lived.
And juliusthecat... "just force yourself" eh? I've had burgers which had a thumbprint of mustard on it, not knowing it was there and nearly threw up thanks to it (spit out the piece, washed down the flavor with full sodas and avoided burgers for months after). Force ain't gunna du it!

Picky eating could cause a mental disorder. If you don't supply your body with enough protein to make all the precursors and neurotransmitters, you will not be too happy.
goobadyJul 7, 2010
I am one of the pickiest of the picky eaters. One of my friends found an online support group, and looking at the lists of what they eat I had the most restrictive diet, usually by a wide margin. I don't consider it a big deal at all. I just tell people I'm really picky and sometimes it will spark a conversation, which has actually been a good icebreaker. I'm only 24, but I just accepted it and I don't let it hamper my life.
I will say that a lot of what they say about the "disorder," or whatever you want to call it, is true. It really isn't as simple as "not liking" a lot of food. Trying something new is nerve-wracking, and when I bite into something that tastes bad (almost everything) it is a horrible experience. It isn't a choice and it isn't my parent's fault. They've tried just about everything you could imagine trying and nothing works. I think it is probably some form of OCD since my staple (bread and ketchup) requires I eat it exactly the same way every time, and even the kind of plate I use matters to me despite intellectually knowing it doesn't really change anything.
doncarajoJul 7, 2010

I was a picky eater when I was young. As an adult I decided that I would consciously conquer all the foods I don't like. For example, I didn't like tomatos, asparagus, peas, all beans of any kind or variety, brussel sprouts, beef, pork. Now, not only do I not dislike them, I love all of those foods immensely. I'm now in the opinion that not only are some foods acquired tastes, but ALL foods are acquired tastes. Simply, we like what we eat because it's what we eat. Like a musician with muscle memory, I think we have a taste memory that gets imprinted from frequent "use" of these foods. This is why fish flavored ice cream seems appealing to Japanese culture. It's what they eat, so they like it.
I have yet to conquer liver though.

As we get older a lot things that we refused to eat when we were kids now taste OK or in many cases very tasty. Our sense of taste matures over time and our intellect searches for new taste sensations to satisfy not only our taste buds but our curiosity. Some things we never get over like liver or kidneys or pineapple, or whatever, but a naturally curious person will seek out new flavor stimuli over the course of their adulthood. It tapers off as we get into our senior years to a degree depending on the individual. My conclusion is that people who eat the same foods all the time are immature, and possibly have a mild mental disorder.
