This is true
When you eat a bag of those at a movie, people will kill you.....
cyrockerAug 19, 2010
they sell chips at movie theaters? I know most sell nachos but regular chips?
YaTiddleAug 19, 2010
You actually buy the food the theaters sell? Heck, I can usually get away with a bucket of kfc if I'm sneaky about it.
darkphenoxAug 19, 2010
Meh some people want to keep their theater open so they buy the food (Movie Companies get most of the ticket sale money).
americangunnerAug 19, 2010
they can close and go to hell if theyre going to charge me $14 for a pop corn and non-refillable soda.
bonestampAug 19, 2010
AMC is great about bringing in your own food. We don't even hide it anymore.
maximillionteeAug 19, 2010
I'm more of a Subway-$5-footlong-and-a-six-pack-of-beer kind of guy when I go to the movie theater. Thank god for the girlfriend's giant duffle-purse!
jon30041Aug 19, 2010
I worked at AMC for about a month. There was a policies update at the time, so I was in one of the theaters for a big staff meeting, and someone asked if there was a company policy about outside food and drink.
The manager explicitly said that there is NO policy regarding food people brought in. I was working concessions, so every time someone complained about the prices, I spread the word :)
protodonAug 19, 2010
so you're dead? interesting.
volatile36Aug 19, 2010
That's not funny. Two of my friends died eating Sun Chips at a movie theater.

Wow, I never thought that being smart would help a situation like this.... Pour it into a bowl?
this article sucks
graphixaddictAug 19, 2010
Meh, people shouldn't digg darkphenox down. Regal Cinemas only hat a net profit of 3.3% last year. Movie theaters pay a boatload to rent movies, ticket sales generally only cover the cost for them to rent the film from the distributor. Any profit is made on candy and soda. Back when theaters just started to create concession stands the film distributors decided they didn't like that the theaters were enjoying an entirely new revenue source and they weren't getting a piece. They chose to just raise the rental rates for the theaters instead of demanding a portion of the food sales. Theaters have actually done us a favor for the most part, instead of forcing you to pay huge ticket prices they have held ticket prices artificially low and given people the OPTION to buy soda and popcorn. If you have a great independent movie theater you enjoy going to, one of the ways you can show your support is to go out of your way to buy a soda or popcorn instead of sneaking things in. A friend and I explored opening a small inde theater but it is really best left to the pro's, margins are super slim in the theater business and messing with the formulas that are proven to work can be very risky.
zenith251Aug 19, 2010
And if the price of that soda and popcorn were within the realm of sanity, I would actually buy them. I have never thrown a dollar at a theater concession stand for that reason you can infer from my last sentence.
n0diggityAug 19, 2010
if artificially low is $14 to see a movie, then count me out. I'll wait a few months and get it from netflix.
graphixaddictAug 19, 2010
All I'm saying is that you are blaming the wrong people. Blame the distributers or blame the inflated salaries of studio execs and actors. That's is what your paying for. Theaters are struggling to stay open....not movie studios.
balancedAug 19, 2010
My biggest issue with movie theaters is that people don't respect the other viewers. It's a movie theater, so you should turn your cell phone off, be quiet, and enjoy the movie. Please keep talking, texting, and other behavior to a minimum.
chrisexv6Aug 19, 2010
Yep!
Also "fun" is to try eating them with small kids asleep in your house. You quickly feel the wrath of your significant other.

Who knew green snacking could be so noisy?
bondheliAug 19, 2010
-2y(environmental pollution) = (noise pollution)²
theonekenAug 19, 2010
Don't forget smug pollution.
thatspsychoticAug 19, 2010
based on bondheli's equation, either y or (environmental pollution) must also be negative, otherwise you'd end up with an imaginary value for (noise pollution).
i think he meant something like 1/(environmental pollution) = (noise pollution), which is really bad behavior.
i'd prefer dealing with normalized pollution values, where (environmental pollution) = 1 - (noise pollution)

ricker2005Aug 19, 2010
Actually "grassroots" does not specifically refer to politics, although it often used that way. It's simply an adjective that means something has to do with the common people.

darthjureAug 19, 2010
Most chips are slightly oily. You'd have oil stained bags sitting on store shelves.
protodonAug 19, 2010
I highly doubt they are louder than any other plastic chip bag, especially a cheapo clear one.
darthjureAug 19, 2010
You are wrong.
xiiiganonAug 19, 2010
I highly doubt you've never actually heard them. Trust me, they are f**king loud.
debtman7Aug 19, 2010
Huh, I thought the bigger problem would be that 98%* of these bags will end up in a landfill, where there is not enough oxygen for them to compost, thus making it nothing more than a marketing ploy.
* according to a recent survey, sample size 1
apcfreakAug 19, 2010
Hey, even if that were the case (Yes, I'm too lazy to google about it), *eventual* decomposition of bags > *never* decomposing plastics. This is definitely a step forward.
ricksiteAug 19, 2010
Why? There is currently a problem with too much carbon in the atmosphere. Locking it in the ground seems like a good solution to me.
debtman7Aug 19, 2010
They have a PDF on their website explaining the bags. Per their own words, in a landfill, the bag will not decompose. Ever. So it's no different than never decomposing plastics if you throw it away.
http://www.sunchips.com/resources/pdf/sunchips_bags.pdf
bonestampAug 19, 2010
Usually the legal department makes them actually test the performance of the product before they can make any claims.
gregloireAug 19, 2010
You're missing the point. Nothing can compost at the bottom of a landfill without any oxygen -- not even compost. It's not the bag's fault, but it still negates the purpose of it.
bonestampAug 19, 2010
I got that, and they're not promising it will compost in a landfill.

I'm convinced they do this on purpose.
I was at a party and I just got done telling my friend I wasn't hungry. Then from the kitchen came the sound of a bag of chips being opened. I felt instinct overcoming reason as my body suddenly did a Pavlovian move to the source of the opening bag of chips sound and now I wanted some.

debtman7Aug 19, 2010
From Sunchips themselves, in a industrial compost facility it takes 12 - 16 weeks to decompose. In a landfill, it takes, uh, never. If you throw it away it's not doing any more good than a normal bag.
http://www.sunchips.com/resources/pdf/sunchips_bags.pdf
atarioAug 19, 2010
I'm feeling better that I'm not the only one who felt this way. I have avoided buying them for this very reason. Note to Sun Chips: your chips are good, your packaging idea has its heart in the right place, but more work on this problem is severely needed.

dulcettoneAug 19, 2010
I trust these bags are a new kind of loud, but people who eat anything out of a bag at a movie should be pummeled. Pour it into your lap or inhale it like a man and get it done.
justgonzoAug 19, 2010
The lady at my grocery store complained about this when I bought a bag recently. Sorry to inconvenience everyone, but it is a bag that seals air tight and can store chips for a long time. Once you eat the chips, you can throw the bag in the dump and the bag will DISAPPEAR. It won't kill a bunny. It won't end up covering the face of a dolphin. It will slowly dissolve under a pile of diapers and batteries. F*** you, Frito Lay, for spending R&D money on something that might actually help us rather than make us more fat and gross.
dienakedAug 19, 2010
If this bag ends up at the landfill under the diapers and batteries, it will never decompose either.
It has to be put into a composting facility.
http://www.sunchips.com/resources/pdf/sunchips_bags.pdf
"Additionally, we have found that under anaerobic conditions (similar to what would be found in a landfill)
no significant decomposition takes place. This means that the new film would not decompose in a properly
maintained landfill."
justgonzoAug 19, 2010
If it is compostable (which it is), once it is introduced to a gas that can help it decompose-let's use a rare example; oxygen-it will slowly decompose, even if that decomposition isn't necessarily measurable. Most landfills would not be completely devoid of oxygen or nitrate or sulfate. There is no possible situation, ever, where this bag is inferior to to the mylar plastic chips are normally packaged in. Short of wrapping the chips in old banana peels, this is currently our best option.
dienakedAug 19, 2010
If this bag is in the landfill it decomposes no different than any other piece of trash there.
