A shame because on one hand these people need jobs and on the other hand, a busy teen is a teen that doesn't get into trouble, who also needs to make some money.
wvaughanAug 8, 2010
Minimum wage goes up, teen employment goes down. Who would have predicted that?
khastAug 8, 2010
Well, I wouldn't exactly say that minimum wage going up is all that great of a sign either. Usually, what I have found, is when the minimum wage goes up, usually so do my bills. Yes, a dollar raise may feel good, until you realize that all your bills just went up just that much more...a lot of times feels like it was a 50 cent/hour loss, rather than a gain.
I live in an area, which 5 years ago, it was actually possible to live quite comfortably on minimum wage....now, working at $11/hr I can barely pay my bills/taxes as it is.

masterkhaxAug 8, 2010
I'm back from my first year of college and after applying at almost 50 places I'm still unemployed and making money through Craigslist hiring myself out for general labor and such.
dauntless1Aug 8, 2010
"General Labor".
Right.

The world does not owe you a job. Learn to do something and learn to do it well. Bring something to the table. Again, the world does not owe you a job.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Lol, I didn't know I said it did? I'm 18 years old obviously I'm going to school to do just that.
allengeerAug 9, 2010
school is not something that provides value to a company. there are very few jobs that pay you to be a professional learner. most jobs pay people to produce. show you can do something that provides value, and people will pay you to do that. but just get a college degree and expect a job for that, and you will find employment difficult.
werfwerAug 9, 2010
"and such"
bow-chicka-wow-wow.
how many roses?
guitmusic11Aug 8, 2010
19 year old home from college for the summer and happy to be bumming around without a job. It'll be much easier once i'm on campus anyway.
glassagateAug 8, 2010
Have you tried getting a job at the cafeteria? If you can fit it into your schedule, you
could get a job there. At the school that I went to, I was able to get a part time
job at the cafeteria.
ostrakonxAug 8, 2010
Ouch, that sucks. I was lucky and was able to pretty much stay employed ever since I was 16, even if most of it was crappy minimum wage jobs until I graduated.
It's a bloody shame that people past school-age need to take these crappy minimum wage jobs though. On the one hand, it reinforces the whole "you need to go to college no matter what" scam that so many teens get sucked into. God knows how many people get told this and go like 50-100K in debt for a Women's Studies or Communications degree, only to graduated and to be forced to work minimum wage jobs anyway.
On the other hand, what has happened to this country when so many adults are forced to go back and work retail or fast food to work minimum wage?

To answer, we have the wrong people in power. I am not just talking about past presidents.

So they don't have beer or drug money. Oh darn.
leftamiAug 8, 2010
You've led an extremely boring and judgmental life haven't you?
mwrlAug 8, 2010
If you mean lived by the law of the land, followed social rules, and lead a happy and fulfilling life. Then you are correct. I would not classify it as being boring though. Boring is sitting around wasting your life away on drugs and alcohol.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
thecoffeeAug 8, 2010
Yes, every teenager who gets a job just wants beer an drug money. They couldn't possibly be paying rent, or working their way through college, no they just want to party. You seem like cynical old man ranting about hard and more moral life was back in your day, and for that you have my pity.
gokingsAug 8, 2010
Sucks because many teens learn the value of hard work during those years. Also, parents get a little break on their wallets, and many could really use that break right now.
lolcoelacanthAug 8, 2010
Add me to the list of undergrads without a summer job.
middleconAug 8, 2010
Yeah its a real double wammy, teens don't get work experience, summer jobs and adults have to take lower payer jobs than they would otherwise want to take.
It will turn around, and the next bubble will start all over again.
seltaeb4Aug 8, 2010
Work, America.
Work harder.
Work longer.
And one fine day in the future, God willing,
we'll be able to afford to give multibillionaires another trillion in tax cuts.
Through this process, you shall become holy, and content,
and your life will then have meaning:
you'll have traded all your days and nights, achieved subsistence,
and made the Obscenely Wealthy Obscenely Wealthier.
When your head hits that pillow for the last time, smile;
You have done well. You have pleased your Masters.
This World would not be possible without your tireless service.
Breathe out; then suck in one last time,
and dive to your Eternal Reward.

Actually, with today's technology making money is a snap. Who the hell even needs a job?

My son is in his final year of college. He has had full time jobs since he was a junior in HS. All his college buddies have FT jobs. The all make excellent money. $11-$18 an hour. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Cool story bro.
nolibertiesAug 8, 2010
Not a story. They have their beer parties at my home on the weekend. They all make great money for college kids.
allengeerAug 8, 2010
I think something needs to be said for this entitled mindset that college grads seem to have. A college degree is pretty easy to get, you just have to be patient (unless you do some more advanced engineering, math or science majors), but actually learning something while you're there at college, well that's rare. Too many grads think the world owes them a job after they get their degree. They never learn to do anything that adds value to a company. Learn to do something, and do it well. Have a portfolio of things you have done (preferably on your own time, for the hell of it, to better yourself). Be a value added candidate. Don't be a gamble. Again, the world does not owe you a job.

This would be more of an argument if education wasn't sold exactly this way and it didn't cost so damn much.
rckola911Aug 8, 2010
so now Mexicans are not taking the lower paying jobs American adults are. When i was a kid i worked at albertsons at age 16 and now i go in there and there are adults bagging and its quite depressing. Most of them have another normal job, but to make ends meet they have to have the 2nd omg job. Hey you gotta do what you gotta do man.

I'm in college and been looking for a second job cause I'm not getting enough hours. I keep applying but really been getting no where. I've been holding onto the same crap job I hate and I swear is eating at my soul but it's money and I'd be s**t out of luck without it.
