It better require a warrant! We have a right to privacy in this country!
craftyguyAug 8, 2010
lol. We haven't had a 'right to privacy' since before WW2..

I should hope so. They passed a law fairly recently where it is illegal to video tape a cop. Rodney King should have something to say about that.
smacksawAug 7, 2010
Why don't cops just get a warrant if it's in the public interest? If they can't get one, it's because a judge doesn't think they have a compelling reason to suspect that person.
This is very simple. Who should decide? Judges or cops? Judges are like parents. Cops are the children. The children must ask the parents for permission. No one is saying kids aren't smart. Hell, there's Doogie Howser. He was an MD. But you need adult supervision. That's what law is. Judges supervise and arbitrate the law. The police just follow the rules. They don't get to make them up or decide them.

Pretty sure this wouldn't require any warrants later in time. =/

get a warrant or put GPS tracking on your cars.
THen we will monitor it for a change

This is a great ruling, Cops often abuse their power and don't care about infringing on the rights of citizens they often need to be taken down a notch. Not to say that Cops are bad, because the majority of them just want to do their job and protect the public, but they often get carried away in this pursuit seeking back-slaps from fellow officers and family for a job well done. (Just as one on Digg or Reddit becomes addicted to getting upvotes.) Then they become Radicalized Cops, these are the ones that must be corrected when they go overboard, whether it be from excessive force or various other infringements on rights. Some Cops have the mentality that everyone that they pull over is somehow a bad person and have done something wrong. They are an interesting case and it would be interesting to see a psychological study of Police Officers.
Recently in the news it was interesting that once they were being video tapped committing crimes against those they were suppose to protect (Excessive Force) they immediately sought to make filming an officer illegal under wiretapping laws, which in reality it would not fall under. I hope that the Fed gets involved and creates a nationwide mandate where they cannot outlaw the video tapping of an officer, because the citizen should have the right to also protect their own rights and persons.

It doesn't help that 90% of cops used to be that kid that everyone picked on in grade school, and are out for revenge now..
cynthianewsAug 8, 2010
hear hear :)

More people need to be aware that cops do things that are illegal (unconstitutional) all the time. They almost always get away with it, too.
rwerelicAug 7, 2010
How was this ever in question?

These intrusions into civil rights would be much less frequent and outrageous if they'd be first applied to police officers as part of their accountability to the public. Put the whereabouts of their cruisers on a website to track for everyone in the jurisdiction (with a 6 hours delay, if you will, to keep it from giving away impending arrests) and see how much they like being spotted at the donuts shop, picking up their dry cleaning or meeting their lady friends during duty hours.

I was thinking along similar lines - what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. It might be fun to put some of these "sticky GPS" units on cruisers without the cops knowing, and see just how much time they're spending at Dunkin' Donuts.
Transparency and accountability FTW.

make sure it publishes data on how fast they were going and if their lights and sirens are on, i got pulled over a few weeks ago for driving behind an officer at the same speed he was going, its bulls**t (also the most akward pull over)
robertisaarAug 7, 2010
they have GPS darts now?
i did a quick google search and found references to objects the size of golfballs to baseballs(no pics though).... do people not look at their vehicle enough to know if there was an object sticking to it that shouldn't be? i mean hell, you should be checking the air pressure in your tires at least once a week, you have to walk to all 4 corners, shouldn't it be obvious by then?
russ3Aug 7, 2010
do the cops pay to patch the hole in my car if the dart data proves inconclusive?
