Watch that first step!
cawpinAug 9, 2010
If the town is "Built Entirely on Stilts" it isn't floating.
powermanz28Aug 9, 2010
It's a DOOOOOZY!!!

That first step is not a doozy, it's a dooky.
sanmanAug 9, 2010
no sewers required!
michaelpintoAug 8, 2010
Actually the new housing that I see going up in New Orleans tends to be on stilts — if sea levels keep rising you could see more and more of this.
smileyouredeadAug 9, 2010
I hope we see more of this

There are whole villages of those moored around islands in the Thames.
cbfhtu68Aug 9, 2010
Needs to be all of New Orleans on stilts and pontoons.
Better yet: the re-engineering of New Orleans should be financed by Venice. That's a city that needs a known working solution for keeping their city above sea level. Venice can't afford to experiment on all the fragile historic buildings but any flotation system that can survive a Category 5 hurricane's tidal surge will serve Venice's needs sufficiently.

Nice.
phucktardedAug 9, 2010
Looks like the one in Res Evil 5, I wonder if that's what Capcom based it on.
douglasqAug 9, 2010
Yeah they did. They actually sent out researchers to that town before they even wrote the first game. They're very thorough in their storytelling.

douglasqAug 9, 2010
No it's true. Like how they knew they wanted Jason to eventually go to space when they wrote the first Friday the 13th.

An entire town that s**ts and piss on the water beneath it?
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
Well we do that too. There's just a lot of dirt and concrete in between.
vectorbAug 9, 2010
And plumbing...
zenmojoAug 9, 2010
Venice?
danwgreAug 9, 2010
but according to the article this is a very green community!!!
y0tsuyaAug 9, 2010
We treat our sewage before releasing it. They just drop the turd right in. Then they drink out of it.
spacesterAug 9, 2010
At least they don't have to deal with Smaug.

"Don’t visit this 'floating' town if you’re afraid of getting wet!"
.....or HIV.
mikepictorAug 9, 2010
Cool. My sister was working as a volunteer doctor on a hospital ship not far from there, and they visited this town. She had a whole photo album of the experiences of life in the town, the floating market in the town centre, ... cool town.

She has them on picasaweb, but it's a private album, so I don't think I can justifiably distribute them. It was neat though, the town has a central area that's open water, and boats baring produce and goods collect up in the area, and people come by. Just like a normal market really, but everyone's in a boat.
mikepictorAug 9, 2010
It's a dirt poor town though, and the water is pretty filthy unfortunately.
keflerAug 9, 2010
pics or it didn't happen.
benroyAug 9, 2010
I'll bet that place smells like Tijuana on a hot day after a rain.
olegovichAug 9, 2010
Since I am an architect, it bothers me that these are called "stilts" and not piles. Oh well, interesting article nonetheless.
tsk05Aug 9, 2010
What's the difference?
olegovichAug 9, 2010
To my knowledge, stilts are referred to as tall poles that allow people to stand a distance above the ground, like clowns and such.
Piles are long wooden, concrete, or steel foundations which are driven into the ground in order to support a structure.
I guess they can be called stilts too, but it just bothers me.

000dnjAug 9, 2010
This is not a floating town. This is a town elevated by stilts.
rxbudianAug 9, 2010
if it's on stilts, how can it be floating?
spacecowb0yAug 9, 2010
Those stilts must be very buoyant!
jayskullsAug 9, 2010
It's like Venice! Only with more AIDS.

Sorry, can't find a screenshot, therefore this comment sucks.

I know which place your talking, was going to make the same comment as well.

Been there, it is a very interesting place. Odd that the name of the country - Benin - didn't quite make ti past the editor's word processor.
loudmusicAug 9, 2010
It's not FLOATING if it is on STILTS.
unclefuzAug 9, 2010
Bluthton, anybody?

See? if the sea level rises, we adapt. Bring it on "global warming".
