I'm not a huge fan of burgers, but my brother dragged me out to the Five Guys in midtown Manhattan a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely fantastic (plus they don't skimp on the fries, which is *always* a good thing).
rsmussnAug 20, 2010
Closest one to Iowa City, Iowa?
ericccAug 20, 2010
This story is timely for me. I just tried a 5G burger earlier this week at the new Fresno, CA location. It was quite good but not up to In N Out standards for me (personal preference I suppose). It was also too pricey, I bought 2 cheeseburgers, 2 cokes and 1 order of fries and my bill was $22 and change, about twice as much as In N Out. I'd definitely go again but not if there was an In N Out nearby.
hydesAug 20, 2010
$22? damn guess ill be having an expensive lunch when i go home.
therightcliqueAug 20, 2010
Whoa. There's actually one in Seattle, with another one coming soon. Gonna have to try it. f**k In N Out for their California-only bulls**t.
hydesAug 20, 2010
except that they are not california only....
megreen831Sep 5, 2010
A quick check of the five guys site finds that they ARE in Fresno.
stayputnikAug 20, 2010
they're effing amazing. DC FTW!
greenroom628Aug 20, 2010
i've tried both. in n'out in union city, ca vs. 5 guys in fremont, ca.
hard call, but in n'out is overall better.
granted you have to pick the right in n'out, but a good in n'out burger beats 5 guys. but...you can't beat 5 guys toppings. so i had to eat both equivalent burgers; a double-double with cheese vs. a 5 guys cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes.
again, tough call: but in n'out is better.
minasokoniAug 20, 2010
Five Guys is addicting. There was one by my dorm in brooklyn heights. You would eat one, fill yourself up to the point where you couldn't eat anymore. Then a few hours later you're craving that sweet delicious bacon cheeseburger with all the toppings you want.... Oh man... I need one now...
ronin4740Aug 20, 2010
I completely agree - In n Out makes a better burger. It *is* close but when it comes down to it the purity of a Double Double Animal Style eeks out victory over a Five Guys burger with whatever condiment combo you throw on it...
However both are excellent and folks looking for a tasty burger will be very well satisfied eating at either establishment!

Their burgers are very good but I don't understand why their considered the best. I mean most sit-down restaurants have burgers that are at least as good; Outback, Logan's Roadhouse and O'Charley's, for example.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
firesightsAug 20, 2010
You're comparing a sit-down restaurant to a fast food burger? Really?
ericccAug 20, 2010
It's an apt comparison. See my comment above concerning price.
therightcliqueAug 20, 2010
If the quality and price are comparable, it's a fair comparison. It's not hard to order food to go at most of these places.
clippclopAug 20, 2010
Nor have I. If I am going out for a burger, I typically choose Fuddruckers.
jackg1980Aug 20, 2010
We had a five guys here but it closed down. the burgers are small. basically a doube cheeseburger from mcdonalds with extra topping for 6$. Not worth it if you have a ma and pops homemade burgers joint near you. fries are darn good tho. IN and out and Five guys cant compete with the ma and pops burger joints here in Texas..Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ericccAug 20, 2010
You may be thinking of the wrong place, 5 Guys’ cheeseburger is much bigger than a McD’s double cheeseburger; their respective nutrition page lists their size in grams and it’s not even close. And as many good burgers as I’ve had in Texas, I’ve yet to have one as good as In N Out.
jackg1980Aug 20, 2010
nope it was a fives guys burger and fries place. Much bigger? come on. maybe a little bigger. definitely not big enough to hold any juice. In and Out is good but basically the same as a Five guys. to me its just a greasy burger. Here in Houston there are many burger places. Old Guys have an exactly smoke jalepeno burger. they smoke there patties all NIGHT! Not greasy at all and has a wonderful smoke flavor. Five guys have absolute no flavor. Here in Houson five guys never even comes up when trying to pick a burger joint. sorry but i want a thick juicy burger.
ericccAug 20, 2010
By much bigger i mean twice the size and In N Out is nothing like 5 Guys. Regardless your take on their respective qualities, their burgers and fries could hardly be more different in size, taste and texture. Although I agree that 5 Guys' patties lacked flavor other than fresh ground beef (maybe they should salt them a little more or let them char a little longer. I'm not a fan of smoking burger patties before cooking, I'm a burger purist and that's fine, luckily there are all types of burgers to cater to all kinds of palates.
jackg1980Aug 20, 2010
You know I am talking about the just the meat right? burger puriest? So a thick and juicy burger is not part of that. also the smoking part of the burger is the cooking part.
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fast-foods-generic/9371/2 = 173 grams (99 cents)
http://www.fiveguys.net/files/files/NutritionalInfo_2010(1).pdf = 190 grams (6$)
Ok five guys has 23 more grams the McDonalds, but it cost 6 times more.
CSA4everAug 21, 2010
You know you are in trouble when they have to put two patties of meat on the bun to make a normal size burger. They should use one patty thick enough to satisfy you. A single patty allow a bit more rareness on the inside and dark, almost crisp on the outside. Two patties is a cheap stunt made to think you are getting a lot of burger.
ericccAug 21, 2010
Thick and juicy is fine. I really don't think a burger should be smoked overnight tho. I'm more of a fan of two burger patties if only because I like the blackened charred bits on the surface you get from a really hot grill and a thinner patties have a greater surface to volume ratio.
Another bonus of thin patties is that, honestly, sometimes I only want 1 patty and often I want 3, most of the time 2 works just fine.
nerfdudeAug 20, 2010
There's a Five Guys right down the street from my house, but In-N-Out is the better burger place. Excellent and cheap by comparison. Unfortunately I live in the midwest and the closest one is probably 2000 miles away.

Five Guys is great but a burger makes me feel like someone dropped a rock in my stomach.

in N out is a better fast food burger and is more manageable as far as eating goes.
Five Guys is a good burger, but I think of it as more gourmet since you can have the weirdest f**king toppings on it. Plus it's huge.
The difference? Five Guys is more expensive than In-n-out. When I went to Five Guys, I spent close to $9 on burger and fries and a drink. In-n-out I can get out of there with just over $6 getting a double double fries and drink.
Also Five Guys fries suck dick; they're nasty.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

LOVE the five guys burgers. I have to be careful there, a bacon cheeseburger is over 900 calories. A regular fry is over 600 calories. Like most things so good, moderation is key.
I'm not complaining, no sirree! Luv dem burgers.
ostegoAug 20, 2010
Never been but there is one opening up near by. Do they have a secret menu that makes the burger better like in-and-out's animal style?

I really like burgers. If I could sit around with weed and burgers all day I would. The only thing that would make it the ultimate is if the burgers had bacon on them.

mmmmm bacon. Do you live in Cali? Find a Douglas burger.
ciarAug 20, 2010
or find a five guys. they have bacon :>
baggochipzAug 20, 2010
Yeah Five Guys piles bacon on their burgers. And you want to know how they cook their bacon? They deep fry it. Yeah, that's right. That makes it extra crispy and... holy crap, someone go get me a towel.

Second, if you're going to talk about fancy burger joints in LA, you go with Fathers Office? 8oz and Umami are the best, both being leagues ahead of Fathers Office

I have yet to try a 5G but I'll give it a shot when I can. I don't see how they can possibly compete with In N Out on value though. With tax, it's $6.08 for a double double fries and drink.
Additionally, the employees are paid very well and work very hard. This leads to a very high level of service that has been consistent at every single location I've been to all through the Southwest.
So no, it isn't my favorite tasting hamburger, but it is my favorite hamburger chain.

@FurBurgerHelper, Short answer no, in fact there are ranches that specialize in Buffalo meat because it's simply better than cow meat.
drcyclopsAug 21, 2010
Buffalo meat is better for you than cow meat, in the sense that getting hit by a car is better for you than getting hit by a truck. Once you slather the meat in mayo and cheese you've pretty much obliterated any pretense of healthiness anyway.
strad2Aug 20, 2010
Agreed. I had high hopes but was disappointed with In-n-Out when I finally tried it. Maybe it is considered good for fast food, but being fast food alone doesn't qualify it as a good burger. Better off going to a well-respected bar and grill for a good burger.
brentthAug 20, 2010
I completely agree. Five Guys is certainly a good burger and I do like the fact that they give you a s**tton of fries, but its not Jesus on a bun or anything like all these folks from the Northeast claim it is. In-N-Out I think slightly edges out Five Guys because they just have a real well put together burger, but its also not near as good as the hype that it gets.
I still haven't found my perfect burger yet. There's a few places here in Houston that make a pretty tasty hambo, but every time I find a place they have one thing perfected but there's something still lacking. One place I like has great beef but they don't pull it together with great bun and toppings. One place has awesome buns, but the burger doesn't knock your socks off. Hopefully someday I'll find a place whose burgers will make me s**t my pants with glee.
darkshroudAug 21, 2010
If you can give Fuddruckers a try, specifically their Buffalo burger.
brentthAug 21, 2010
I've been to Fuddrucker's. They're burgers are good. I've never had their their buffalo burger though. There's a place here in town called Bubba's Burger Shack and they have a buffalo burger that I've tried. It was certainly good, but it's not quite as good as their normal burger because the buffalo meat doesn't quite have the same grease/juice factor due to the leaner meat. I do love me some ground buffalo though in the meat sauce when my wife makes spaghetti. Better than ground turkey both in taste and in fat content.
mhugginsAug 20, 2010
In-n-out is overrated, but Five Guys is far underrated. Best burger ever.
dani8559Aug 21, 2010
I LOVE Five Guys burgers, but the fries are just terrible. You get a single order which is twice the size it ought to be (and I'm being generously American.) They are way too thick cut and cooked at a lower termpature than they ought to be. The result is soggy, greasy fries that ultimately make the meal feel even heavier (not necessary given the juicy burgers.) They should turn up the temperature on their cooker a little and do a double fry, Belgian style.

nytelAug 20, 2010
Smash Burger?? LOL
haikufuAug 21, 2010
The burgers at Smashburger are NOT as good as In-n-Out. I had In-n-out in CA one day, and then the next day had Smashburger in MN. They are not even in the same league.
Smashburger is about as good as it gets where I'm at. But In-n-out blows it away.

Five Guys beats all!
wontstoptalkingAug 20, 2010
Hmm...
I've never had In-n-Out, but I've had Five Guys (I've been to two of their locations, which are about 10 minutes away from each other, for some reason) and it wasn't that good. It was really expensive for the meal, and I was a bit disappointed...they got the order wrong and the burger itself wasn't really that good, both times (order was only wrong once).
Then again, it was on the first day of their operation, so they were probably still figuring things out, and the crowd there was HUGE, so that might have something to do with it.
jackg1980Aug 20, 2010
You know I am talking about the just the meat right? burger puriest? So a thick and juicy burger is not part of that. also the smoking part of the burger is the cooking part.

SoCalLongieAug 20, 2010
In-n-Out has one commissary where they truck their food from. All restaurants have to be within a certain radius of that commissary because In-n-Out never freezes their meat. Why not open a second commissary? Having just one allows a very high level of quality control.
rejectpenguinAug 20, 2010
Im in Colorado to. You should really try Culver's there burgers are the best.
mweatherAug 21, 2010
I can attest to this. I live right next to an In-N-Out and eat there all the time, but when I want to splurge (pretty much any comparable burger costs twice what In-N-Out does), Culver's is where I go. I even drive by a 5 Guys to get there.

nab25jAug 20, 2010
I live in the promised land of Southern California, where we now have In-N-Out AND Five Guys. What a time to be alive. Just tried Five Guys a few nights ago and, honestly, I think it's a wash. Both chains are excellent and worthy of the title of hamburger gods. I just wish there to be peace between the two factions of society, joined by our mutual love of quality burgers.
Also, cajun fries from Five Guys and animal style fries from In-N-Out. Get me cajun animal style fries and I will ask for nothing more.
mmrosekAug 20, 2010
I'm jealous. I only get to eat in-n-out a few times a year b/c they hate money apparently and won't expand to the east coast.
nab25jAug 20, 2010
It's the first place my sister wants to go every time she comes to town. I've heard their reason for not expanding is to not spread their supply chain too thin - keeping all their restaurants close enough that the food never has to be frozen to get there from the source. Don't know why they don't open up new distribution points to prepare the food, but someone figured it out that way.
cdixon3Aug 20, 2010
Yea same way with White Castle.. I only get to eat once, maybe twice in a year... I live on the west cost..
enclavedAug 20, 2010
for those of us far from any in-N-out what are animal style fries?
elchispitoAug 20, 2010
It's just fries with a piece of american cheese and grilled onions and thousand island sauce on them.
I don't like them because the american cheese often melts then congeals due to the thousand island. Plus, I just don't think they're that great.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
nab25jAug 20, 2010
Yeah, it's just that, but it doesn't have to be complicated to be good. It's a simple thing, but quite good if you're into that kind of thing. As for the cheese congealing, well, it can only stay melted for so long. It melts and cools like it would on any cheeseburger and is never melted to a liquid. The fries are about like Five Guys' except more shoestring than ... however you characterize the cut of Five Guys' fries.
iamjustinmAug 21, 2010
It's melted cheese, in-n-out's "secret sauce" (which isn't just thousand island dressing) and grilled onions piled on top of your fries.
Amazing stuff. You can also get your burger Animal Style as well, it's the same as above, but with pickles.
davenp0rtAug 20, 2010
Five Guys will give you a little of their cajun seasoning, just ask for it.
THEN POUR IT ON EVERYTHING.
jackg1980Aug 20, 2010
five guys just closed down here in texas. They cant compete with the local burger joints here. Not even Whataburger. A burger here in texas is a 1/2 lb + and it takes 2 hands to pick it up.
realillusionsAug 20, 2010
Uh, that's not even close to true. Whataburger is a good fast food burger, but it's no Five Guys. And not every burger has to be a full side of beef.
And Five Guys closing down? I call troll.
jackg1980Aug 20, 2010
If you want your patties to be a 1/10 of an oz. then stay with five guys. Look at baytown, texas Five guys. The one time i went in there there were 20+ workers and about 10 customers. it still took 15 minutes to get the burger. the business is bad. I like my burgers big and juicy. not 2 thin dry patties with extra grease. there is more lettuce and tomato then meat on those burgers. I put them in the same category as the McDonalds double cheeseburgers.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
stevecubeAug 20, 2010
I don't think you have been to a Five Guys because they don't put lettuce or tomato on your burger unless you ask for it.
jackg1980Aug 20, 2010
well I did... it comes with all the topping you want. But for the price it should.
hurricanedcAug 20, 2010
I've always held the belief that Five Guys needs to have babies with In-n-Out. Five Guys' burgers and fries, In-n-Out's animal style and milkshakes.
wit21Aug 20, 2010
Utah has both, too, plus we have mormons. So that makes us the real promised land (god is on our side. Yay!).
By the way, Crown Burger puts both places to shame (Utah local owned by Greeks). Why are people so into In-N-Out? Its only upside is that it's cheap, but you get what you pay for...

smacksawAug 20, 2010
I still haven't been to Five Guys; their fries interest me.
Here in Quebec, what makes our fries/poutine different is that fries are soaked in water to remove starch. The m.o. is to soak them and fry them twice. That keeps grease from penetrating the fries. Vinegar is popular with fries here as it washes off the rest of the grease.
Five Guys soak their fries, making them less starchy. The texture of these fries are soft and don't have a chalky bite to them.
In-N-Out is the exact opposite, which is why I don't care for their fries. Ray Kroc found out with McDonald's that having his fries stored in a desert with fans on them also changed the texture. That's how his fries were different. The point is that you have to do something to make your fries not be starchy. In-N-Out just sticks raw potatoes into a slicer and then puts them in hot oil. You can make the exact same thing at home with little effort and get an identical result.
Another thing about Five Guys is they only use northern potatoes. It does make a difference. Any potatoes grown south of the states on the northern US/Canada border are not the same, just as say...avocados in Florida are not as good as ones from California, or citrus from California is not as good as citrus from Florida. Five Guys gets it, these things matter. They are elevating and educating customers and I think they will continue to make strides and change the game.
I have one close to me, I need to just get off my ass and go...except in Quebec, I can get fries like theirs in a hundred places next to me, so...
firesightsAug 20, 2010
Why would you go to 5 Guys for the fries?
It's all about the burger, baby.
hurricanedcAug 20, 2010
It's all about loading up the burger with all the toppings, eating an entire large order of fries by yourself, and living to tell the tale.
otbeverlyAug 21, 2010
The first thing I learned about effective 5 Guys ordering is to get a burger with the topics you like. All the way is simply too much. Lettuce, tomato and a little mayo work great.
Adding things like onions and mushrooms makes a bacon cheeseburger far too unwieldy.
darkprodAug 20, 2010

Wait... potatoes originated in South America. The climate of southern states is perfect for them.
And say what you will, but In-N-Out's fries are very, very good (though, they end up too crispy sometimes - but they always taste fresh).
asus3000Aug 22, 2010

darthdanAug 20, 2010
For me two things set In 'N' Out apart. The first is that all the ingredients for their entire menu is shipped without having ever been frozen, meaning that it has to be shipped into location on a near daily basis. That's why they are so picky about where they expand too. It's all logistics. The second is the price for a meal. You can get a whole meal at In'N'Out for 5 to 7 bucks. Five guys is around11 to 13 for about the same thing. Healthier and cheaper, plus in my own opinion tastier, it's In'N'Out all the way.
baggochipzAug 20, 2010
Uh... hate to burst your bubble, but the same can be said for Five Guys. Fresh everything. And I always eat at Five Guys for 5 to 7 bucks. Little Bacon Cheeseburger (I have to make an effort to not spell it "cheezburger" anymore, heh), split a small fries (they put the cup in a bag and fill it, that's a lot of fries), drink. Six bucks and change. That being said, I love both places.
Closed AccountAug 20, 2010
In addition to also being fresh meat, Five guys also freshly cuts their fries from potatoes in the store, and uses peanut oil for frying.
bdigital24Aug 20, 2010
research fail
Five Guys is all fresh, including the fries which are made from potatoes which are freshly shipped in every week.
And the reason Five Guys is more is because everything is bigger (and better).
swern425Aug 21, 2010
Not that there's anything wrong with enjoying fresh and local ingredients, but I fail to see what the problem is with frozen goods lately other than that improper packaging could cause freezer-burn. If you follow standard first in first out procedure, you're not going to be eating anything dangerously old.
If Alton Brown can repeatedly advocate freezing many foods, I'm behind it.
Also, if you're looking to be environmentally friendly by eating locally, shipping daily must have a larger carbon impact that shipping in larger quantities (by rail, for instance).
magneteyeAug 20, 2010
In-n-Out... that's what a hamburger's all about!
musaffaAug 20, 2010
If In and Out is so great why are they only in the southwest? I go there when I travel, and they make a damn fine burger, but why not branch out? There are four 5 Guys' withing 10 miles of my house. The nearest In and Out is in Tuscon, 1493 miles away. They would blow up in the mid-west.
zaynexzandersAug 20, 2010
They're a family owned company that doesn't want to outgrow their supply chain and ruin their food
hivem1ndAug 20, 2010

SoCalLongieAug 20, 2010
In-n-Out has very high standards of quality control. They never freeze their burger patties. All food is distributed to the restaurants from a single commissary. So the restaurants have to be within a certain range of the commissary.
Less restaurants = better quality control.
tyrghastAug 20, 2010
Oh so they have the same quality control constraints as Wendys, an international food chain?
spacemanspiff22Aug 20, 2010
To everyone saying In-n-Out is impossible to franchise or whatever, read how five guys did it:
http://digg.com/d31NsZ1
They had the same obvious reservations about doing it, since it contradicted a lot of their fundamental premise. Its really an interesting story though and obviously its been quite a success. I've had ones from the original shops, and halfway across the country, and you can't tell any difference whatsoever.

My first trip to In-N-Out was very disappointing. It's an above-average burger as fast food standards go, with a bunch of fanboys from SoCal who give reasons like "They'll make it any way you want!!!!!!" (I was with a girl once who got a grilled cheese sandwich at Arby's...ANYBODY will make your food the way you want if you just ask) and "The secret menu is amazing!!!" (most fast food places have a "secret menu", notably Wendy's, and frankly it's a good business practice to put your best food on the regular menu). Maybe some people can taste the difference in fresh-never-frozen beef, but I sure can't. In-N-Out makes a decent burger, but I was not overly impressed.

Anyone who ever though In-N-Out is really the best has clearly never been to Oregon/Washington's Burgerville. Grass fed beef, and tillamook cheese are a match made in heaven. Seriously, you guys have no idea what you're missing. (For the record I have tried all of them, and five guys is pretty good too, but I was never that impressed with In-N-Out).
yarozeAug 20, 2010
I live in Oregon, I have Burgervilles, all over the place, there is even a 5 guys I eaten at in Oregon City.
I will say this, I like in and out better, I have been known to drive down to California, to visit with friends and family, and make for darn sure to get my 4x4 with Animal frys, for me a rare treat, but well worth the drive.
samoan27Aug 20, 2010
Having grown up in Oregon, gone to school in Cali, and currently live in Virginia and having great exposure to all three my favorite is Burgerville, followed by 5 Guys, followed by In-And-Out.
What clinches it for Burgerville is the fact that it actually has more than three things on the menu.
illepicAug 20, 2010
I really dig that Burgerville puts a lot of thought and effort into the sustainability and resource use of their restaurants. Things like mostly recyclable packaging on everything and Northwest seasonal menu items are nice for us Portland hippies :P Also, their burgers are f**king delicious.

Burgerville is good but expensive for what you get. Although in many of them in the Portland area you are getting steak quality meat.
The wala wala onion rings though.... :o
youkayAug 21, 2010
eh? s**tty service, cold food and ridiculous prices? I'll stick to my 1000 mile drive to in-n-out thnx
gehringerAug 21, 2010
Burgterville is good, but a bit more Gourmet and expensive.
their seasonal stuff (especialy walla walla onion rings) is amazing, and well worth the extra money.

Best f**king burger I have ever had.
diskohAug 20, 2010
I've had Five Guys a few times. Didn't find anything special at all about their burgers. But I loved their hot dogs.

Five Guys Large Fries: 1464 calories, 71 grams of fat!

frostekAug 20, 2010
Disgusting slop as usual.
eurynom0sAug 20, 2010
The portion on the fries are just ridiculous...maybe it varies by location but at the one by my college it was usually more than enough to split a small with someone else. I'm not even sure how they figure out the sizes because while they do give you a cup they would basically just pour them right in the paper bag.
mclaincauseyAug 20, 2010
Their servings are large though. They fill a cup and then dump a bunch in your bag.
Closed AccountAug 20, 2010
Last time I went the cup was full, I ate what was in the cup then poured the bag to refill the cup....there were still frys in the bag after refilling.

Cheesebuger: 840 calories, 55g of fat!!
nofx1510Aug 20, 2010
A large fry from five guys could feed a family of 4.
prolikewhoaAug 20, 2010
a fat family of 4!
bovilexiaAug 20, 2010
A large fry at Five Guys is a small paper bag full of fries.
asus3000Aug 22, 2010
Order a large and get a small bag? Sounds like a rip-off..
tiggerethAug 20, 2010
My wife and I cannot finish a small fry together after eating 1 burger each (her a single, me a double). Trust me if you're eating a large fry you're already not concerned with calories.
pylaeronAug 20, 2010
I'm pretty sure that once you've made the decision to eat at a place like Five Guys, you shouldn't be surprised that you're probably gonna put ~3000 calories and 120 grams of fat into your body.
iamjustinmAug 21, 2010
wwwwwwtttttttttffffff. I hate finding out about things like this...
Did anyone else almost vomit when they found out the calories and fat in Quizno's tuna sandwich?
tw3ekAug 20, 2010
Here in Detroit, we only have Five Guys, but it sure is f**king good. Is In-N-Out still being a bitch about not expanding beyond the Southwestern US?
eurynom0sAug 20, 2010
I wouldn't call it being a bitch. I'm pretty sure the reason they don't expand more is that they want to be able to be able to keep the ingredients local and fresh, and don't want to wind up like McDonalds shipping frozen crap all over the place.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

That's not it at all. They're artificially attempting to keep their demand up. White Castle does the same thing and Coors tried to to do it but eventually gave in.
strad2Aug 20, 2010
@diggbigwig: I agree with the artificial demand bit. Hearing people from Cali speak about In-n-Out, you'd think they were serving magical unicorn burgers. Then I went and tried it and, yep, nothing special. If they went national, that allure and curiosity would evaporate.
galvoAug 20, 2010
Five Guys does it fine..

Same here (Indy) too but trust me, In-and-Out is way over rated. You aren't missing much.
errdayimhustlinAug 20, 2010
This... 5 Guys is in a league that In & Out can't touch.
elchispitoAug 20, 2010
Let them run their company however the hell they want. You're angry because they don't want to expand?
chiefbandit2200Aug 20, 2010
The west side of Michigan has neither of them, so I have never had them =/
I like burgers from smaller diner style restaurants better than ones from fast food franchises better anyway.
mike42979Aug 20, 2010
Yeah digg me down f**k fags but Five Guys Tastes like a burger made of water and grease! Complete absolute s**t, you want a good burger try Back Yard Burger!!!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

dmm219Aug 20, 2010
Both are good. In and Out wins though. Sorry...
frostekAug 20, 2010
Seriously?! Who cares?!
No wonder Americans get a reputation as food-obsessed monomaniacs (thanks for that phrase, Lisa Simpson!) when every time an utterly inconsequential article about some fast food slop gets posted we get so many comments from people clearly salivating like Pavlov's Dogs.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
firesightsAug 20, 2010
You're right. Americans are the only people on the planet who are in love with food.
frostekAug 22, 2010
Yeah, 1223 Diggs for a burger story makes sense...
strictneinAug 20, 2010
You're really quite boring. I know, you're trying the whole "above it all" routine, but really no one cares. It's just a meaningless story and it's fun to debate meaningless topics.
Try removing the stick, stop taking yourself so seriously, and see how much more enjoyable life is.
digitaldeadstarAug 20, 2010
Love Five Guys. Never been to an In-N-Out, as we don't have them around here. :( Love to try them, though.
I recall people telling me and my girlfriend how horrible Five Guys is. "Too greasy," they'd say. Then another friend mentioned how good they were and how they give a ton of fries. So we decided to find out for ourselves. I get in, see their fry cup size selection and I'm like "That small cup? Pfft, I'll take a large, please."
... I didn't realize they fill your cup AND bag up. I was in heart attack heaven and it was good.
Only an hour and 15 minutes until they're open. Lunch, here I come!

Five guys is quite good. I think they might have the better fries. But I would say In-N-Out trumps in the burger category.
jackopforAug 20, 2010
I tried a Five Guys in Scranton this weekend. It was a pretty tasty burger but i still love the protein style from In-n-Out. Fries are good as well..
chasetecAug 20, 2010
Five Guys isn't a place that those of us with peanut allergies can go to which really sucks because I've got several of their locations near me and no In-and-Out. But you can be sure that every time I'm in California I eat at In-and-Out every other day.
kent1146Aug 20, 2010
Aren't most fast food places off limits for people with peanut allergies anyway? I thought that most food was fried in peanut oil because of the low cost, high smoke point, high stability (and therefore re-usability of the oil), and taste?
chasetecAug 20, 2010
Most don't. Chick-fil-A is one of the biggies that does. I can personally eat Chick-fil-A every once in a while because of how their oil is processed, other people can't. Five Guys uses peanut oil but for me it is the open and frequent consumption of raw peanuts that prevents me from going there. Same thing prevents me from going to certain bars.
tyrghastAug 20, 2010
The world does not cater to freak allergies.
Things fried in peanut oil are delicious.
form3hideAug 20, 2010
Freak allergies? Allergic to peanuts (and tree nuts) is incredibly common.
murmandamosAug 21, 2010
so this reminded me for no reason of Hot Dougs and their fries that are fried in rendered duck fat. aaaaaaaaaaaand i just came.
