Oh, hi there. I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to be one of the bad cops in #5, mainly because it's an accusation that most of the right-wingers digging this article make whenever I criticize one of their spammy submissions.
Just to get this out of the way, I say their submissions are spammy because they consist of low-quality articles (like this one) from a comically-biased right-wing blog that set up shop only two weeks ago (July 22nd), but which has nevertheless been submitted to Digg 25 times by six different users, getting 100+ diggs on ten of them (and 200+ on six of them).
http://digg.com/search?s=site:therattingtonpost.blogspot.com
This submission, for instance, has ~100 diggs despite being submitted to the sluggish Education section at around 3:00 a.m. EST. Smells like coordinated spam to me. That's a reasonable claim to make, no? I'm pretty sure no site ever submitted to Digg has had that much success that consistently that soon after being created. Not even The Oatmeal. And The Oatmeal is pretty cool, unlike this crappy teabagger blog.
Anyway, these right-wing spammers don't like it when I call out their obvious spam like I just did here, so they look for a way to discredit me or otherwise distract from my claim. And they found a fittingly stupid way for it.
Six months ago, the debate about health care reform was raging. I comment a lot about politics, mainly by debunking disinformation, and I was seeing a lot of conservatives claiming that health care reform was dead because opinion pollster Rasmussen was showing record low approval numbers for Obama. I was skeptical about Rasmussen because their polls are consistent outliers that always seem to favor Republicans. So I tested my suspicions by taking all the public polling data from the RealClearPolitics polling archive and graphed them in an Excel chart:
http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/313/trendline.png
The results were pretty compelling, so on February 2nd I used the chart in a comment:
http://digg.com/politics/Rasmussen_SOTU_bounce_dissipated_Obama_drops_to_44?t=30902158#c30902158
Not wanting to let such a convincing argument go to waste, I used the chart six more times on Digg by February 24th:
http://digg.com/politics/Rasmussen_SOTU_bounce_dissipated_Obama_drops_to_44?t=30892268#c30902255
http://digg.com/political_opinion/2010_Top_Ten_Dubious_Polling_Awards?t=30902566#c30902566
http://digg.com/politics/Rasmussen_SOTU_bounce_dissipated_Obama_drops_to_44?t=30905062#c30905755
http://digg.com/politics/Rasmussen_SOTU_bounce_dissipated_Obama_drops_to_44?t=30905164#c30905817
http://digg.com/politics/71_now_say_the_legislature_is_doing_a_poor_job?t=31226634#c31226634
http://digg.com/political_opinion/Has_America_Already_Had_O_nough?t=31239693#c31241575
So, I posted the chart to Digg seven times altogether in less than a month. It's pretty likely that a frequent reader of the Politics section would see that chart, right? Especially if they're a mutual friend of mine, right?
Well, it turns out that happened! On March 14th -- two and a half weeks after I posted the chart for the *seventh* time -- my mutual friend novenator re-used it:
http://digg.com/politics/Barack_Obama_s_approval_rating_drops_to_46?t=31557502#c31568016
Another user, DukeOnkled, reacted skeptically to the chart image's lack of sources (which I normally disclosed in my comment the times I posted it) and asked him if he'd made it himself:
http://digg.com/politics/Barack_Obama_s_approval_rating_drops_to_46?t=31557502#c31568229
A couple hours later, I was reading the now-popular thread when I noticed novenator's comment using my chart and DukeOnkled's question about it. Seeing as how I made the chart, I posted a brief response to DukeOnkled explaining what the axes were and linking to the source of the data:
http://digg.com/politics/Barack_Obama_s_approval_rating_drops_to_46?t=31557502#c31568312
Later that evening, I noticed in my comment-tracking tool that my explanation had been buried to hell. Wondering why a simple explanation would be so hated, I clicked through to the thread.
Apparently one of Digg's resident conservatives had seen my response, assumed that novenator (the poster of the image) and I (the answerer of a question posed to novenator about the image) were the same and that we'd gotten the logins mixed up, and proceeded to invite all of her right-wing buddies to pile on. Jump to conclusions much?
Anyway, I popped back in to explain the misunderstanding, but these guys are of the eliminationist, slandering mentality that hold every perceived wrongdoing against their enemies, even if it's obviously false. So from that point on, whenever I criticized an inaccurate right-wing submission, they'd ignore the charge and accuse me of having multiple accounts to try and get me banned.
In the many, many times they've brought this up, non-sequitur-style, I've done everything it's possible to do short of mailing them my birth certificate to prove their claims false:
* I've pointed out the fact that I've been on Digg since 2007, and novenator since 2008, so I'd need to operate both accounts independently for years just to gain a single extra vote/voice.
* I've pointed out that I've used my Jordan117 username on multiple other sites like Bungie, Sporcle, and Picasa that are all referred to by my Digg account, whereas novenator has his own novenator accounts on Reddit, YouTube, etc., that are referenced by his own Digg account, and that there is zero overlap between the two, meaning that I'd need to operate both accounts with their own history and backstory self-consistently for years without ever once cross-referencing the two or making a mistake... again, just to gain a single extra vote/voice.
* I've pointed out using timestamps from the Digg comment API that there have been multiple occasions prior to the original comment misunderstanding where novenator and I were commenting on Digg simultaneously for several minutes at a time:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AkUZplVrLb-kdHRTYVpWVjE1Q3IyelNVX1pFZjgwM2c&hl=en#gid=0
* I've pointed out that our writing styles and tones are totally different, that we each discuss/digg non-political stuff regularly, and that we digg each other's submissions less consistently than some of the right-wing users accusing us, so it wouldn't even make practical sense for him to be my sockpuppet, anyway.
All ignored, and without a shred of contrary evidence. I kinda feel like President Obama vs. the birthers, in that they are not satisfied no matter how much factual or common-sense evidence I raise -- not because they actually believe what they believe, but because they loathe me and desperately need some kind of way to make me seem illegitimate, even if it's bulls**t. And I feel really bad for novenator, who has to put up with this nonsense just because he re-posted a link.
tl;dr: disingenuous spammers gonna spam (and be disingenuous)

I have seen the speculation about Jordan being a novie sockpuppet, and in fairness to the former, that's laughable. Novie is a barely literate pseudo-journalist whose submissions and comments look like scrawlings from a high school restroom wall. Though I generally disagree with Jordan, he's far from an idiot and about eight cuts above novenator.
avengingturnipAug 5, 2010
No, captain,
They were personal attacks. I have an encyclopedic grasp of facts and novy is not much more than a buzzing insect with his emotion based comments. I brushed them off and have no interest in going back looking for them.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Wow,
I see threats and bluster but no links to this alleged "abuse" and plenty of "abuse" foisted upon novy.

jordan,
Correct disinformation? Rasmussen only polls "likely voters." Gallup and many others poll "adults" and the numbers are better for your dip s**t President when adults are polled. However, even Gallup can't keep him above 50% any longer. Some polls use "registered voters" and Obama is underwater in those polls. When registered and likely voters are polled the outlook for Democrats and the President of this regime are grim. Rasmussen does daily tracking and he predicted the 2006 Democrat take over in congress and in 2008 with the Obama win very accurately.

Sandy, i see youre back to troll some more. I thought you were banned a while back? Nonetheless, here is some valuable information, much of the country is not happy with Obama because he is too far right. Yeah, TOO FAR RIGHT. The left was energized in 2008 for a moderate president, instead we got a right-wing, corporate friendly, spineless, fool that caters to the shrill right. So, just watch what you say and how you predict s**t from polls--just because YOU think (incorrectly) that Obama is a "dirty, liberal, socialist, communist, kenyan" does not mean that those of us that THINK do. We look at his policies and actions and we see a president that is a spineless, right-wing favoring, corporate whoring fool. Now, this is where you should pay attention, are we going to vote for someone that is MUCH worse in 2010 or 2012? Nope. For all these faults i have pointed out, he is good in many ways. You have the media on your side, and youre easily fooled, duped, tricked into believing that the "outrage" is on your side with the polls, well, guess what? Youre wrong. Nonetheless, im certain that is a position you are very familiar with.
novenatorAug 6, 2010

I dunno, dave, this one is kind of trollish "Have the Obamabots finally admitted yet that their beloved leader failed to live up to all his promises? Obama could have stopped this with one executive order"
The whole calling Obama crap like beloved leader and use of terms like Obamabots is only meant to annoy people and not add anything to the discussion, thus trolling.
davidnivenAug 6, 2010
@ZaphodBeeb
I respectfully disagree. I can make fun of Obama and his supporters all I want. It's not about annoying people. It's about proclaiming how I see things. That it annoys some people I cannot help. Oh, well. If my posts annoy others, then they need to get a life, get some thick skin, and stop taking all of this too seriously.
And it doesn't have to add ANYTHING to the discussion. Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't. THAT is not the point.
And just WHO gets to determine if anything of value was indeed added. You? Me? Digg moderators? Does it matter? This is not a scientific white paper that we are creating. This is not an educational forum where substance trumps style. This is a social commentary site. I am socially commenting. How many social comments add VALUE to the discussion? Come on, dude.
"Obama could have stopped this with one executive order."
Is THAT not adding value to the discussion?
So what if I called Obama by his pre-Islamic conversion name of Barry Soetoro? So what? So what if I call Obama's supporters who blindly follow him regardless as Obamabots? So what?
The point is this - the site invites social commentary. It's rules specify only that commercial spam, personal attacks, etc. are not allowed. It says nothing about taste, refinement, or even accuracy.
If you think my post was trollish, ask yourself this: Did Obama live up to all his promises? Could Obama have stopped certain functions of government with a quick executive order? Do many of Obama's supporters treat Obama almost as a cult leader where whatever he says becomes absolute truth for them?
This is what I was getting at. That is why I call them robots or Obamabots. That is why I critique Obama.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

See, people can't take this sort of argument seriously. Zaphod pointed out some rather trollish things you were saying (I'll give you he should have left out the last sentence where you were making your point). I don't think you'll find ANYONE who says that he has lived up to all his promises, hell, no president has.
And why do you think he's a muslim? Wasn't he going to a christian pastor that wingnuts like to complain about Rev. Wright? Why would he go to a reverend's church if he was muslim?
davidnivenAug 6, 2010
@Niallgriff
"...nobody is going to listen to you when you just start off with insults."
Sure they are. Most people just read through it and go on. Many of us have thick skins. And it doesn't really matter to me if ANYONE reads my posts. I hope they do. But, in the end, it's not that big a deal.
"And why do you think he's a muslim?"
He changed his name from Barry Soetoro. Muslim converts tend to change their names to an Arab or Muslim sounding name. Obama will not allow Hawaii to release his actual birth certificate. That computer-generated one on the internet is not legally binding and irrelevant...and might actually be fake.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBgkDSw-wQ0
Look, all Obama has to do is release the actual birth certificate and make all the naysayers look like fools. But, he doesn't. That means something is on that certificate that he doesn't want released.
"Wasn't he going to a christian pastor that wingnuts like to complain about Rev. Wright?"
I don't think that Wright is a Christian. That church is one of those weird black liberation churches with quite strange teachings.
http://sweetness-light.com/archive/barack-obamas-church-ultra-left-and-afrocentric
Keep in mind that this church changed their website after all the bad press and fired Wright as the pastor.
"Why would he go to a reverend's church if he was muslim?"
He wouldn't...if it really were a Christian church. I'm not talking about any circular reasoning here (Obama is a Muslim and wouldn't go to a church so that church is not Christian). Black liberation theology is quite different from Biblical Christianity and mixes quite well with offshoots of Middle East Islamic teachings.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

It's Democratic voters versus Republican voters on digg. From what I've observed, the digg populace tends to be more favorable of Democrats.
Then you've got the very tiny unorganized group of truly liberty minded people who have no chance of front paging anything and are constantly buried on comment threads.

Are these like the trolls hiding in the dark corners of the bathouse or under a bridge in a state park/rest area??
Closed AccountAug 5, 2010
They are the same sorts of people, Jason. The Marxists will stop at nothing to push their big government and globalist agendas down our throats, kind of like the other kind of trolls and their "Stimulus Packages".Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

But it is still strange that you associate with so many NoClones. As you can see, a whole bunch of them are inactive.
Just be careful boy.

BTW, this is the real NoLibertarians. I know this because he very recently referred to me by a nickname that he coined for me a year ago.
Either this is the real NoLibs or this is one deranged individual who knows everything about NoLibs and his comment history which likely exceeds in count the maximum positive range of an integer value.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

maddoktor2Aug 5, 2010
Actually, it was you who was behind it.
In your own words:
"I have an interesting plan for screwing over the No-brigade guy. First we need to find a female conservative/libertarian who is very active on digg and comments a lot. We coordinate with her to be the knowing victim of sexual harassment. (Yeah, this is going to be a false flag trolling operation.)
Meanwhile, I will create about 3 bogus no accounts that won’t bury anything but will pose as the guy that calls us all “son” and trolls our submissions. After about a few weeks all three no accounts will let loose with some heinous sexual innuendo. Several of us will then proceed to report all no accounts and accuse all of them of being the troll.
After a while, many diggers will just blindly report any no account that posts. Remember that Herkimer, Onetimer, and JCM267 all got banned when they stirred up a s**tstorm. Now we just have to foment one behind the scenes.
Do you know of any willing falseflag female targets on Digg?"
There are liars, and damned liars.
You, sir, are the latter.
tzvika613Aug 5, 2010
@Maddoktor2 - Good work! Where did that quote come from. (Not a surprise.)
3 bogus no accounts - like a herd of human cattle.

A lot of these guys are on my "Friends" list, and I've been involved on digg around most of the 'timeline' in question. If my 'friends' were up to no good, I'd want to know about it, and they'd be quickly removed.
However, I see nothing here but what could be a complete work of fiction. There are no screenshots, there are no dates, there are no links to the sources. Nothing substantial. I could just as well write a piece of fiction about a bunch of diggers I don't get along with, put their name in a colorful box with a bunch of nasty text, and voilà!
Hell, if I looked hard enough I could find a forum about something I disagree with, create a new user giving it the ID of a digger I don't get along with, say a bunch of garbage, then post it on here saying "LOOK WHAT HE SAID! LOOK WHAT HE SAID!"
This is the freakin Internet. There's no proof of anything, not identity, not "quotes", not anything.. and you know what? None of it matters either. If digg mattered in public opinion, Ron Paul would be President, we'd all have iPhones, and be married to Megan Fox. Sheesh!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

maddoktor2Aug 6, 2010
quirk, the proof was submitted - what triggered this series of exposés is the fact that Digg was presented with all the documented evidence and did absolutely nothing about it.
Closed AccountAug 6, 2010
Do you know why? I will tell you why Maddoktor2! The evidence is insufficient. It is kind of like running to the police station with fuzzy photos of UFOs and claiming that the aliens are going to invade.
Besides, Digg is getting rid of the bury feature, so they probably don't give a s**t about your reports anyhow.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

This is the second submission I've seen today that names and shames submitters. This is Digg. It isn't a reenactment of high school. This petty, teen angst type of stuff is ridiculous. Buried.
