I just looked up the lyrics to cleverly reply with the next line and involuntarily facepalmed.
I'm hot cause I'm fly
You ain't cause you're not
This is why
This is why I'm hot
Really...REALLY?

There are many reasons why we are fat. . . Bacon, Fourth Meal, cookie dough, etc. . .
lavarockAug 17, 2010
Interesting infographic, but for some stupid reason they flipped the "mass transit" parameter around to suggest riding the bus makes you skinny. Makes the whole thing look like a moral critique instead of a neutral data chart.
artlukmAug 17, 2010
Obesity has nothing to do with mass transit, but some people (whoever created the report) can't help but inject their personal politics into everything.
lavarockAug 18, 2010
Surprised they didn't have another square for "recycling"
thecoffeeAug 17, 2010
Riding the bus is more exercise then driving a car.
Even if you don't have to walk several blocks to get to your stop, you still have to stand around waiting for the bus to show. Add in the fact that during rush hour seats are not always available and the fact that you cannot stop at a drive thru you can see where mass transit can be factor in overall health.
keithlolbermannAug 17, 2010

artlukmAug 17, 2010
Absurd. When you park your car you still have to walk to wherever it is you're going. How is walking from the parking lot different from walking from the bus stop?
Standing around is exercise? Please. You think burning 10 calories matters?
thecoffeeAug 17, 2010
Walking the parking lot != Walking several blocks to your bus top and walking from your bus stop to your destination.
I did not say standing is exercise, I said it was healthier than sitting. In the short term it has no effect, however overall as part of an active lifestyle it has a major impact.

I noticed Merlin9090 joined on Aug 1st, and has added a few DP's recently, and his comments are....well, quite entertaining and yodaesque (ESL). Guys, for just a few dollars more, you can buy quality American labor.
But you should read his comments, they're pretty funny (New articles from african sources sad me makes!)

American labor no best than labor other people
jstraskAug 17, 2010
I am stand corrected.
foomojiveAug 17, 2010
None of what you said makes any sense. Can I have some weed?
artlukmAug 17, 2010
Sigh. Another stupid post on Digg claiming a lack of exercise is the reason for obesity.
Do you know how many hard working construction workers there are out there that weigh about 100 lbs more than they should? Those guys practically define the beer belly.
Most obesity is caused by poor food choices and/or excessive food intake (usually both).
I've know a lot of different overweight people. The ones that lose weight do so by eating healthier and reducing food intake. The ones that fail work out 5 times a week and think carbs and calories don't matter.
y0tsuyaAug 17, 2010
Sure blame genetics. There are people who can eat whatever they want and not get fat, and there are people who eat nothing and still get fat. But the vast majority of people are not that way. Americans became morbidly obese within the last 2 decades. And I find it hard to believe the genetic makeup of Americans can change so much in 20 years.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
artlukmAug 17, 2010
Like I said, it's the food.
y0tsuyaAug 17, 2010
You said genetics.
artlukmAug 17, 2010
I said less than ideal genetics, with ideal meaning you don't have to watch what you eat.
There are people who can eat ice cream and potato chips frequently and never reach an unhealthy weight. But a lot of folks can barely eat any junk food or they'll start to put on the pounds, slowly but surely.
y0tsuyaAug 17, 2010
It's not genetics. We share the same genes as rest of the world. Yet we're one of the fattest. I refuse to blame the genes.
browzerAug 17, 2010
"Do you know how many hard working construction workers there are out there that weigh about 100 lbs more than they should? Those guys practically define the beer belly."
Because they overeat.
Men use about 2000 calories a day just by existing. Let's say these workers work really hard and burn 3000 calories a day. If they have the typical bad American diet, I'm sure they are easily taking in 3500 calories a day.
That's a 500 calories surplus per day. A pound of fat is 3500 calories. So, they are adding about a pound a week. After a year, that's an extra 50 lbs, give or take.
Even though we print calories on food products, most people still don't have a sense of what "a lot" of calories are. Additionally, people think that eating a salad will somehow cancel out eating a tub of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. It doesn't work that way.
gonemad83Aug 17, 2010
Not using imperial measurements helps a bit with feeling like it's "too many".
3500 kilocalories (the measurement on foods) = 14,644 kilojoules
If you REALLY want a sense of achievement, measure your food in kCals and your exercise in kilojoules...
slothlikescakeAug 17, 2010
Sign. Another stupid post trying to convince us that a significant amount of fatties are whale like because of their genes.
JOG ON FATTY!
artlukmAug 17, 2010
I never said that. I said they don't have "ideal" genetics (meaning they can't eat whatever they want). Most people do not have the genes to eat whatever they want. NORMAL people can't eat whatever they want. That was my point. So if you're normal (less than perfect) then food is the reason for being overweight.
My main point was exercise is the least important issue.
Closed AccountAug 17, 2010
BULLs**t. They overeat. I've worked construction for years and guess what, many are not fat at all. The "fat" construction worker is a stereotype. Those that are fat are fat for the same reasons anyone else is. They eat like pigs. No reason to eat four f**king chili cheese dogs off the roach coach for lunch, no matter how big you or small you are...
artlukmAug 17, 2010

bardamuAug 17, 2010
No excuses. You are fat because you eat and drink way too much and you don't exercise enough to burn off the crap you shove in your mouth.
Period. End of story.
Think that 20 oz bottle of coke a day is harmless? Would you shove 16 sugar packets in your morning cup of coffee? Probably not but that is how many packets are in one can of coke. The crap is poison and should not be consumed on a regular basis.

sinnetAug 17, 2010
As he said, his point is that a good amount of daily exercise isn't going to stop you from being fat if you overeat. The infographic tries to say if you walk to work you wont be fat and that people who drive to work are the (fat) enemy.
Either way, exercise is more about a healthy living and less about being thin. Even if you are thin due to "ideal genes" and you sit around all day, you're not going to be able to go out and run a marathon let alone down the street without being out of breath and tired.
The infographic only put in the word "fat" so people would read it, and it worked.
gozrothAug 17, 2010
I live in Dallas and ride my bike everywhere. I guess it's nice to not be obese, but I'd like to not catch on fire everyday too.

Conclusions are too hard to extrapolate in four dimensions, but I get the point.
Boring presentation.
belebihAug 17, 2010
The person who made this counterintuitive infographic should be fired. Or at least get a stern talking-to.
gonemad83Aug 17, 2010
This is dumb. You can eat 5 days worth of exercise in one giant ass cheese burger with bacon meal. And more health conscience people will usually opt to walk/ride.
ishqboliAug 17, 2010
moving to europe caused me to lose 25 lbs without even trying. some of it was due to the fact that the mediterranean diet is somewhat healthier, but i do think i mostly owe it to having to walk around everywhere... no way in hell i'm ever driving in europe anyway.
nastjuidAug 17, 2010
Driving is why I have a nice home and a good job. Oh, and why I can bring groceries for my family home. Oh and how I can get my kids to school. Oh wait, I'm not fat. I'm not malnourished like many 'fit' people either. I guess what I mean to say in reply to this article is. MONKEYS MONKEYS MONKEYS WAFFLE WAFFLE DOOOOOOOOOOOG. It's just as valid.
handonamAug 17, 2010
why is this fricken JPEG?!!?!!!?!?!?!
jayskullsAug 17, 2010
What's wrong with JPEGs?
sonickAug 17, 2010
From Wiki:
"JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for photographic images"
"The color limitation makes the GIF format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for simpler images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color."
rishodiAug 17, 2010
This is a f**king terrible infographic. The information is interesting, but the manner in which it's presented is awful.
billybob235Aug 17, 2010
I agree. I have no idea what any of the numbers mean, the key is not helpful at all, and it appears that people bike more than they drive in obese pennsylvania, which makes absolutely no sense.

One hour a day of some sort of exercise. Just one measly hour....
bardamuAug 17, 2010
Climate and density play a big role. All the states where it's either way too freakin hot most of the time (like NC where I am located) or stuff is spread out too far (again like NC) get lower scores.
Having said that I rode my bike to work this morning (9.4 miles) and made it here in 26 minutes.
henryutaAug 17, 2010
Agree on food but also change in how humans live. Most people live far away from their work which most of the time takes place sitting behind a desk. I mean you can't bike 18 miles to work and back every day. Food needs to change and people need to become more active to counter sitting all day.
foomojiveAug 17, 2010
I biked 13 miles to work and back for 6 months and loved it. We moved closer and now I run commute. I read a story of a guy that rode a bike on his 60 mile commute. That's pretty hard core but it would be quite an adventure every day!
bladzalotAug 17, 2010
Man that is a confusing chart, what the eff are the numbers for, I did not see them in the key?
omicronnineAug 17, 2010
Actually, it is in the key. Look at the last item.
It represents the rank among the 50 states and DC, from 1 to 51.
jayskullsAug 17, 2010
That's it! I commute 60 miles every day, but dammit I'm gonna start riding my bike. I don't care how long it takes me!
rebirfAug 17, 2010
Driving is why it doesn't take me two hours to get to work. lol

I live in France, and over here the obesity rate is around the 10% mark see http://www.annecollins.com/obesity/worldwide-obesity.htm. That's nearly 3 times less than in the US! Why?
Well, having travelled a fair bit across the states over the last 20 years I would say it's because of what you guys eat and how you eat it.
There's way too much fast food in the American diet. In France the "Mcdo" exists but it's not on every street corner and it's just where you take your kids to keep them quiet, you don't go for the food.
In France when you eat it's like a family ritual, or at least one meal a day is, often two. It happens at a certain time, there's no TV, there are usually 3 courses and it's something to be enjoyed, preferably with some wine, not something to be got out of the way so you can watch your favorite TV show.
I remember when we went to Florida last year we had to travel miles to find any restaurants that served a decent salad! And then we found one which watched with gaping mouths as fellow diners lathered theirs in fatty dressings! Can anyone see my point?
