Holy s**t, I'm glad to hear he lived, but geez, wtf drove him to drive so fast?
puttsyAug 24, 2010
Being a 19 year old I want to take offense to this, however I can regretfully say I have driven vehicles well over 100mph on highways in seemingly similar traffic as well as test driving sports cars and seeing how fast I can get to on city streets. I not a car guy, I can hardly change my own oil let alone work "under the hood". At 18 a friend bought an '10 Camaro and I topped it out at 127 on a rural country road. After his getting a 108mph ticket in the same car and myself totaling a car at 70-80mph head on with a deer I no longer practice such stupidity, however it is a "19 year old handicap" to speed...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

@puttsy, what you just said was "I take offense in being generalized as an idiot, but I am an idiot and in fact a big retarded idiot, but I try to not be anymore but my friends are and BTW the generalization is true."
What. The. f**k?
sprucecabooseAug 24, 2010
I'm 25, and I can attest that I have had my cars over 100 MPH on highways a few times in my past. Usually much less occupied highways though.

That thing maxed out at 127? FAIL.

darkshroudAug 24, 2010
It's called the flow of traffic, meaning you don't go faster than the people around you.
I've only taken it up to 90 once, at 2am on a back road with a long stretch and no one around. I've never done that again because I had planned to just let it coast back down to 50mph but then the light changed. I couldn't break in time and wound up sliding through a red light. I had my horn going but I was lucky that the little single lane cross road was empty as usual for that time. I don't do that garbage anymore and now I see accidents in that area a couple times a year.

I'll be the voice of reason and say that it's unfortunate that he lived. People who drive like that have no regard for other people's lives. The probability is that if he can get behind the wheel, he will do it again and the outcome may not be as lucky for him (which I personally don't care about - if he doesn't care about his own life, I certainly won't) or someone else the next time around.
maxxellAug 24, 2010
"In November 2009, Eden was cited by the Ohio State Highway Patrol for driving 90 mph in an 65 mph zone, according to records filed in the Fairborn Municipal Court."
This wasn't even the first time he's gotten in trouble for speeding. I guess next time we shouldn't even give him a speeding ticket, because then he 'wont learn his lesson'. Just let him crash the first time, right csdco?

I would assume that this would be one of those life changing events.
I doubt he would ever drive like that again if he pulls through.

thekohAug 24, 2010
@sturmgiest You can only excuse someone with a bulls**t platitude like that when you've done the same or worse. There are, obviously, different levels of being a "dumbs**t."
But, until you can tell me that you were detained for possession of drug paraphernalia and a full bottle of alcohol, then were given a break and let go without being arrested, only to (within 1 HOUR) start driving at 100 MPH and pulling off stunts that clearly would never work.. only then can you use that "we were all a dumbs**t once" line.
This is de-evolution, it's an insult to our species that someone could be so f**king stupid.

speedygAug 24, 2010
I know that stretch of highway. Grew up in the area.
That stretch is notorious for its awful accidents, mostly caused by drivers who practically use the thing as a drag strip.
c010rb1indusaAug 25, 2010
The article said that it was a cop's dashboard camera that filmed the accident. I'll bet anything that the kid was driving really fast noticed he was coming up on a cop, and hit the breaks (probably way to hard), which caused him to lose control of his car and that's how he drove into the median. When your going that fast you never slam on the breaks, you need to let the car slow down out of it's own momentum. He probably just didn't want a ticket...

Why's the dude with the camera got to drive 50 in the left lane. No wonder the guy had to swerve into the middle. Get to the right, jerk.
dutchguilder2Aug 24, 2010
Um, the dashcam is from a cop doing the same speed as all the other non-f**khead drivers. Moments before the crash the 19-year old f**kwad driver was passing other drivers at speeds of at least 100 mph. He came within a few feet of going head-on into the oncoming traffic, which would have killed others (I know an idiot who was always bragging about speeding and did just that, killing a mother of an 8-year old daughter).
http://www.wdtn.com/dpp/news/video%3A-i-675-crash-caught-on-tape
cgialloretoAug 24, 2010
Exactly my point! The left lane is for passing, then you get back to the right. Obviously this guy was going too fast, but driving like that on the Autobahn in Germany would cause accidents. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
tavallaiAug 24, 2010
Or any place with half a semblance of sense, for that matter.
maffiouAug 24, 2010
I'm not sure they use the lanes in the same way in the US, can someone confirm?
mwrlAug 24, 2010
Funny, the Autobahn has speed cameras everywhere now. Oh and it has a speed limit too 300KPH.
cgialloretoAug 24, 2010
I'm from the US but have lived in Germany for many years. You're supposed to use the lanes like that in the US as well, but not many people do. In Germany, passing on the right is strictly forbidden. There is a speed limit of 70 mph on about half of the Autobahn, but they all have stretches where there is no limit. In these spots, driving in the left lane is dangerous unless you are going around 100 mph (160 kmh) because no matter how fast you are going, there is a good chance that someone in a Porsche is coming up behind you going much faster.
cimmerianxAug 24, 2010
If you are already doing the speed limit, there is no reason for anyone to be passing you anyway. Right?
tufyheadAug 24, 2010
cgialloreto, I completely agree with you that Germany has it better when driving. However you cant compare it to all of America because some areas do strictly enforce only passing on the left. I live in California and its pretty much a cluster f when it comes to highway driving. But I've also been to Colorado and Utah where they are much more by the rules when it comes to driving on the right and only passing on the left.
I do have to point out that you say its the traffic cops job to slow down and block speeders, that's exactly who this was in the video, a highway patrol....
sexyboboAug 24, 2010
This guy was breaking the law and nearly killed a bunch of people in the oncoming traffic and your blaming the guy that is obeying all the traffic laws?
The left lane is for faster moving traffic (and faster moving means people actually going the speed limit) it is not a dedicated passing lane.
skinny01Aug 24, 2010
In most states I've ever been in the right is the travel lane and the left IS the dedicated passing lane. You can get a ticket for traveling more than a mile in the left lane without actually passing another car for that reason. So you're somewhat right, the left is for faster moving traffic (because they're passing the slower people that are on the right).
cecilx22Aug 24, 2010
most of the 'left lane for passing only' laws have exceptions for heavy traffic. Additionally, HE WAS PASSING THE WHITE VAN (see end of video)

You are an ignorant **** and i hope you die in a violent car accident u ****
CSA4everAug 24, 2010
For people on this tread, there is an excellent book called "Traffic" by Tom Vanderbilt that delves into all this. One of his main ideas is that many accidents occur because you do not know the intentions of the other driver. We have no protocols for signaling our intentions, other than turn signals and brake lights. I've always wondered if cars should not have weak radios that allow us to talk to any other car within a given radius. But I can imagine some creative and non-productive uses for that.

Guessing he either fell asleep or was unconscious for some reason. The vehicle was basically driving straight, and if you watch the brake lights they flicker the moment the car goes airborn -- which looks to me like inertia kept his foot moving resulting in a tap of the the break, but then the light immediately goes out. If his foot was in the right place that inertial was able to tap the break, why wasn't he pushing it?
Of course maybe there was enough mass in the pedal itself for inertia to force the pedal forward, but I doubt it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

--------Guessing he either fell asleep or was unconscious for some reason.------------
Asleep at 100+MPH?!
Yeah, sure, detective...
skinny01Aug 24, 2010
That's why you don't speed like that, your car won't react as quickly as you'd like it to. He was probably trying to make too fast of a weave and that'll make the wheels lose traction. And as soon as that happens, you're going in a straight line from that point on until you slow down enough for your wheels to get their grip again....or you're sent flying through the air.
nevariusAug 24, 2010
Guessing at 100 mph once your on the grassy median traction becomes an issue.
oldlostcoryAug 24, 2010
In the article about it, they said he was passing people on the berm. He probably touched his front left wheel in the grass and it grabbed him sending him off the road.
jimbolauskiAug 24, 2010
At 100mph a quick turn to avoid a cop onto the shoulder which would have gravel and other debris would easily get that car to slide once he's in the grass he's along for the ride.
inspectorkempAug 24, 2010
At those speeds your tires have very little traction on grass. Not only would the tires have trouble getting grip on the grass, but the uneven surface would keep the tires from making consistent contact to the driving surface. I would image that if he was attempting to steer the vehicle back to pavement it would have matter very little.
smemilyAug 24, 2010
The grass would sort of liquefy.

Holy s**t, man. Mad props to your prompt pull over and fortunately the right hand lane was open!
br0ken1128Aug 24, 2010
No kidding! there was a lady driving to the back right of me but fortunately she had plenty of time to stop, she saw me pull to the right and immediately went to the shoulder at the same time.
The whole thing was just insane.
The latest news report is pretty telling though.. he was arrested an hour before the accident, police found him in the parking lot with a teen girl.. the car had drug paraphernalia and an unopened container of alcohol .. he was cited and released 20 minutes before the crash and the girl he was with was released to her father's custody.
So while he did pass a sobriety test, there's a good chance he was at least slightly under the influence.. he was probably flying down the highway in anger, or as suggested.. maybe he was trying to kill himself.. it doesn't say how old the girl was he was busted with, but she was less than 18.

Wow, good job on stopping. I would have just kept on going. That was a close call.
hater2winAug 24, 2010
My first thought after seeing the crash was about the driver on the right who moved over into the side lane with perfect timing/instinct. It almost seemed like you knew what was gonna happen before it did and knew exactly where to pull over to.
I'm not kidding when I tell you that was my first thought. Good driving.
br0ken1128Aug 24, 2010
Thanks! I just reacted, there wasn't much thought involved.. the only conscious thought I had was thinking that the car was going to ricochet off the bridge/overpass and land on top of my car, when I glanced over and saw this thing literally explode, it was probably a good 15 feet in the air.. I didn't see Brennan get ejected from the car at all, and I had no idea he was literally hurdling toward the path of my car... Instinct may have helped me get out of the way, but luck prevented him from getting ran over.
I admit I just googled this, but at 65 miles per hour you travel 95.333 feet per second ( http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090827165935AAnF08L ) ... I was locked in at 65mph with cruise control since a cop was behind me ( being safe ) .. if I had even delayed one second hitting the breaks I would have been 95 feet further up.. me not hitting him was milliseconds of timing.
pe5t1lenceAug 24, 2010

Someone else had posted the google maps URL right here. Looking at the guard rail, does it look like it makes sense that his 90+mph car would launch THAT far?
br0ken1128Aug 25, 2010
The police are saying he hit a bern and launched him onto the guard rail .. it looks to me in the video like it was more the bern than anything else.. when I was driving to work today I didn't notice any damage to the guard rail where he went airborn.. watch the video and you can see a big puff of dirt as he's launched .. so the bern thing makes the most sense.. besides if it was the guard rail as initially thought, it seems it would probably have rolled him
Maybe tomorrow I'll see about stopping to check it out.. if I'm out there early enough before traffic that is, there's actually a lot of accidents on that stretch

I noticed that too .. but when he went off the road, the ride may have been too rough to hit the peddle, those cars aren't known to be smooth riding even on concrete.. I don't believe he was wearing his seatbelt either but I could be wrong..
Even if he did it wouldn't have mattered though, early morning ... the grass was dewey and it had rained the night before in some places..
tabularassaAug 25, 2010
@SchrodingersCar: I think the video quality is good enough to pick out the detail of the brake lights. Pay close attention and you'll see them blink for an instant right after going airborne.
So yes, it looks like he wasn't hitting the brakes before crashing.

It was an attempt to kill himself by me.

Did anyone else pause it just before he crashed and thought to themselves, "Well, it looks like the duke boys got themselves in a whole heap of trouble again..."

19 years old, passing cars at 100 MPH, losing control going into the median, hitting the barrier and going airborne, being ejected (ie., no seatbelt)...
I guess we should be grateful that he might now have learned a lesson, without having killed anyone, but I'd be much happier if this kid had been brought up to have some consideration for other people's lives. Perhaps it'll take another 19 year old assh**e going 100 MPH, and destroying _his_ family, for that lesson to truly sink in.
asus3000Aug 24, 2010
Note to self: Never pass cops on grassy median under bridge with guardrails at 100 mph.

No sympathy. Driving is the most dangerous thing we do every day, I hate that people have no respect for their own safety or the safety of everyone else on the road. Driving drunk is criminal, driving that fast should be too. It's not like the highway was clear, he could have easily killed someone. Sorry but that kid is an assh**e.
trumpetman4evaAug 24, 2010
Not sure, but I believe reckless endangerment is a criminal charge. He could be charged with that.

I drive that route every day on my way home from work. If you look at his tracks he left, it looks like he drove right over a drain grate. It is at an angle that would have caused him to ramp right over the guardrail.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/crime/police-had-arrested-released-man-before-horrific-i-675-crash-877351.html
Police admit that he was not tested for drugs or alcohol during his arrest, despite the fact he was in a parking lot with some teen girl and was found with drug paraphernalia, trace amounts of marijuana and an alcohol container ..
thechauvinistAug 24, 2010
FTA:
“Eden was cooperative throughout, and there were no indications of Eden to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of his arrest. He was released prior to 6:54 a.m.” Monday, Wuebben said.
Wuebben added that Eden was not tested for alcohol or drugs because the situation “did not warrant testing for alcohol.”
Hmmm... he had an unopened beer (not a 24 pack) and *may* have gotten stoned after the arrest. But retarded stuff like speeding on fwys is not a stoner characteristic.
br0ken1128Aug 24, 2010
Passing a field sobriety test is in not being sober, a friend of mine had passed a field sobriety test ( also in beavercreek mind you, which is where Brennan was arrested ) when he was drunk off his ass, a few beers and several shots of rumpleminze in his blood and he was sent on his way.
I realize that the officer probably couldn't do anything sine he passed the field sobriety test, but that is in no way saying that Brennan wasn't under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both.. it's just upsetting to think that it could have been prevented .. or rather.. was so nearly prevented..
Adding it all up just makes it seem worse.. I was sincerely hoping it was something else is all .. hurrying home because of an urgent matter.. not "just got released from police custody for drug and alcohol related charges"

"he had unopened alcohol in his car"
Is this a crime in America or something?
br0ken1128Aug 24, 2010
If you're 19 you can't buy it which is why I believe they charged him with prohibition .. 21 is the legal age, but I'm not a legal professional .. it does mean though that he could have been drinking earlier in the night and was just going home in the morning when he got caught in the parking lot with the 15yo
He was charged with posessing drug paraphernalia, "drug abuse", prohibition and I believe something else.. the fact is though that they didn't test for drugs or alcohol because he passed the basic field sobriety test.. stand on one leg, recite the alphabet, count backwards.. etc my point is just that passing that test doesn't mean you're not under the influence.. I'm not saying he WAS .. but it's possible that it contributed.. we won't know until they release a toxicology report
buryyourheadAug 25, 2010
It's called an MIP...Minor In Possession
davidwmfcAug 25, 2010
They still use the "stand on one leg test and count backwards" test over there? Jesus.. why not just dunk him in water and see whether he floats or not?
As for it being a crime to have beer in your car at the age of 19 or 20.. pretty glad I don't live in America
acesmcnuggetAug 25, 2010
You wanted the kid to be thrown in jail over unopened alcohol (which you can legally transport at 18, so long as you neither purchase nor consume it), and a trace of marijuana? I agree that his speeding was reckless and unnecessarily endangered countless people, but you're crazy if you think he should be locked up for a crime that is for all intensive purposes as minuscule as jaywalking.
br0ken1128Aug 25, 2010
Where did I say I wanted him in prison? I think an actual drug/alcohol test wouldn't have hurt.. you stop a kid with an underaged girl in his car, marijuana, drug paraphenalia and an unopened beercan? you found the unopened one, who's to say what was going on a couple of hours earlier? .. he may have been sober enough to count backwords and stand on one leg .. doesn't mean he's clean .. so jail? no .. but I think there was enough there to warrant a test before sending him off to fly down the highway .. especially since he has a record ( failure to control, speeding ) ..
All I'm saying is it could have meant the difference between intensive care unit, fighting for his life.. risking the lives of others.. and just an inconvenient day at the police station.. but you're putting words in my mouth and calling me crazy for it.. jaywalking doesn't lead to you exploding against a bridge by the way.. unless someone plows into you at 100 miles per hour eh?
And no I'm not saying he was intoxicated... as I DID say, we won't know that until they release the report .. the point is .. if he was.. it could have been prevented.
br0ken1128Aug 25, 2010
and on the meaning of "charged with prohibition" I'll admit I could be wrong as to what exactly that's related to in this particular case.. I couldn't find specifics, but when I've seen it mentioned before it was related to underaged drinking
acesmcnuggetAug 25, 2010
"He's 19 .. how was he allowed to go? .. now I'm upset.. he could have killed me that morning!"
I interpreted "how was he allowed to go?" as you implying that he should have been detained, which they had no probable cause to do. He was charged with his crimes, given a court date, and released. If the police drug and alcohol tested every kid that they found with 1 beer can and a trace amount of marijuana, they would be backlogged beyond all recognition and broke to boot.
Jaywalking doesn't lead to you exploding against a bridge, and neither does having 1 beer can and a trace amount of marijuana in your possession. I know because I have at several times in my life possessed these 2 objects at the same time, and never have I exploded against a bridge. It was an analogy. Neither the crime of jaywalking nor the crime of possession of a trace amount of marijuana warrant holding a suspect. He was taken into custody for the items in his possession, and as stated in the article, he did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol. There were no open containers to even imply that he might be under the influence. How would you like it if you were pulled over on the way home from the grocery store with a 6 pack of bud light in your car, and the cop made you do a field sobriety test or a blood test with no other probable cause?
The prohibition charge was more likely for the marijuana, as since we are currently in a national state of marijuana prohibition (similar to the alcohol prohibition in the earlier part of this century), possession of any is a crime. I don't believe that underage drinking would classify as a prohibition charge.
The situation, as I understand it: A 19 year old was in a parked car with a 15 year old girl. The girl did not appear to be there against her will. The father did not appear to want to press charges against the man, which would imply that he either new his daughter was with him, or that he was at least ok with that fact. The 19 year old had 1 can of unopened beer... Not a crime in any way shape or form. The police officer conducted a routine interview, after which he deemed the suspect to not be under the influence of alcohol. As there was no evidence of drinking or being drunk, there is no legal justification for a sobriety test. A trace amount of marijuana was also found. He was charged for possession of a prohibited substance, and released. I don't see what else the police could have done here. In hindsight, it's very easy to say that he should have been tested before begin released, because after he was, he caused a massive accident. But prior to the fact, there was absolutely no reason, legal or otherwise, to subject this kid to a sobriety test.
br0ken1128Aug 24, 2010
There was an update today .. he was in police custody just 20 minutes before this accident for possession of drug "paraphernalia" .. he had an unopened alcohol container in the vehicle.. 19 years old.. yet he was just cited and released only to have this horrific crash 20 minutes later.
http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/crime/police-had-arrested-released-man-before-horrific-i-675-crash-877351.html
Now I'm actually pissed because he was probably stoned, and possibly had been drinking.. and I could have been killed because of it.
thenikAug 24, 2010
I doubt he was stoned because he was going over 60mph.
thekohAug 24, 2010
Don't be a dumbass and blame the weed or alcohol. People are in control of their actions. I've never met anyone who's said that they were 'so drunk they HAD to drive.' People are always given choices and options, this kid would've crashed either way. He just needs to get arrested and beaten s**tless to help him figure it out.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

He should lose his license for a while and be charged for criminal negligence. This s**t is unacceptable. I don't give a flying f**k if he is 19 if one chooses to drive like that one should pay the physical and legal price for it. Everyone on the part of the freeway at that moment had a chance of being killed. I have VERY little sympathy for this kid.

bobthegreat1224Aug 25, 2010
It's a near certainty he'll pay enough for this without further criminal prosecution, and the likelihood of him being physically capable of driving is rather slim. Chances are good he'll either be paralyzed or have lost at least one limb, and he will without a doubt carry heavy scarring for the rest of his life. That's if he even lives in the first place. After all that, he's looking at tens of thousands of dollars in hospital bills and months of rehabilitation. They can file charges on him afterward, but I'd lay money they'd just be sentencing a broken man.
Not that I think any less of his grievances than you do, I just don't see what other justice we can extract from him.

anothersoldierAug 24, 2010
I think he's in critical condition. He still may not survive.
rotundoAug 24, 2010
If he dies it will be a blessing. And I don't say that lightly: from the stories I'm seeing he's been caught driving like a maniac before and he does it while drunk or stoned. He's an irresponsible jerk and if he makes it he'll probably hurt some innocent bystander before too long.
It would be better if this experience scared him straight... but I wouldn't count on it.
londubhAug 24, 2010
I think he survived because he was ejected from the car. If you look at this video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18tKh9WX9rQ you can see how he landed. If he had a seatbelt on I strongly suspect he would have been crushed when his car collided with column. Still this is not an argument not to wear seatbelts since you are 99% more likely to survive with fewer injuries in a crash. He was still pretty messed up though.
