1. Lets see it perform on some decent sized hills rather than flat open road. Lets say San Francisco.
2. Crash protection? At least on a bike you can get thrown clear.
canudi9itAug 18, 2010
This car would be perfect for me. My commute is downhill both ways.
greevarAug 18, 2010
If you had bothered to read the article it says that the car will go half as fast on up hill travel. The important part is that people are trying new ideas instead of being a pessimist like you. No ever said the Wright brothers would succeed either, now we have 9/11.
bille3Aug 18, 2010
60 mph is pretty lame. All of the prius drivers I see are going at least 75. Mileage be damned, if it is a hybrid, the drive the hell out of it.
wussAug 18, 2010
That's pretty cool, but just cuz it has a shell in the shape of a car with some chrome bicycle wheels doesn't make it a car anymore then 4 wheels on a plane makes it a "flying car".Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

So... what's your definition of car then?
brbybeeAug 18, 2010
your mom
wussAug 18, 2010
if you want to get technical, apparently the broad definition of a car is any vehicle (something that can carry things) with wheels. So in that sense this is a car, and so is a Radio Flyer wagon.
The real world non-nerdy-always-trying-to-be-super-literal definition would probably consist of a vehicle that's officially classified as a primary road vehicle with a set of specific minimum engineering and design requirements, which would eliminate things like bicycles with cardboard shells in the shape of a ferrari, and a Boeing 747 which can technically drive down a large street if required.
greevarAug 18, 2010
So I guess the fact that it is street legal doesn't matter?
danielwfletcherAug 18, 2010
Looks likes a life-sized pinewood derby car.
dinglebuttAug 18, 2010
that's not the crank.
...
i didn't say stop rowing.
snoogsAug 18, 2010
This was FP'd yesterday. Take note- on the video, the car is going on a slight down grade the entire time, and never stops and restarts. As long as you are on down-hilled country roads, this car looks great.
rolfAug 18, 2010
My dad managed to go to school and back uphill both ways.... so I think I can find a way to work downhill both ways.
rpatrick819Aug 18, 2010
Behold the 60MPH* Hand-Cranked Hybrid Car!
* When driven by 15-17yo boys or diggers
liltbrockieAug 18, 2010
What's a digger?
rpatrick819Aug 18, 2010
One who digs. Obviously would be good at working their cranks.
rolfAug 18, 2010
Since when are diggers in shape?

What makes more greenhouse gasses?

You missed the part where they mix the Ethanol with nine-parts gasoline.

The music is nice. Dubstep 4 life yo.

Now all it needs is a eunuch beating a drum and a commander screaming "RAMMING SPEED!!!"
brainflakesAug 18, 2010
Meh, here's a 70mph pedal / gas turbine hybrid bicycle (presented by Jeremy Clarkson of course)

skinturtleAug 18, 2010
Ya know....i can tell by the comments..that most of you suck. Think a little broader would ya?
The technology in this would make it a great alternative to a bicycle. Screw the car idea for now. Just make it a little smaller...make it a two seater (or just a one seater) and a rig like that would be awesome for people who live in cities and make short trips.
If I had the cash I'd ask the guy invent just such a thing.
nosecohnAug 18, 2010
That thing's street legal?! I think the PS stands for something else.

Animals are known to be very efficient, some birds for example. I think this idea has a great potential. It definitely lacks serious safety features, but just like the first lighbulb invented, this inventions has a lot of development to do.
I have no doubt, that it wold be possible to build a human+solar powered small city cars, similar in shape to Smart cars. But the price must come down, 15 grand is too much for this.

That will work great here in Texas, current temperature 107.
parasitewaspAug 19, 2010
So in the video he cranks it about four times (maybe implied he has crank it some more but not sure) and goes a really long distance. The video shows him cranking at a stop and while driving. It's probably good if you don't live to far from work and stores. Like someone mentioned before it really needs a windshield. I think there's potential, but risking your life on a major road. Good luck with this.

Wow, Digg hates everything
omicronnineAug 19, 2010
Why the open top? People are a lot less aerodynamic then a smooth closed in top would be.
You'd think with such a low powered vehicle they'd want to maximize efficiency.
