A couple of Jesus freaks decide to pump out an endless stream of kids they can homeschool and somehow they end up on TV? How f**king bankrupt is our culture?

Yes it is, most of the homeschooling is done by ignorant religious fundamentalists aiming to brainwash their kids and keep them away from actual science that may help them understand the way the Universe actually works.
masamunecyrusAug 22, 2010
RizzosBack:
No, it's not. There are an increasing amount of homeschoolers in the country as the public school system not only becomes worse, but even becomes dangerous in many areas (not just inner city -- gang violence is spreading all around). Additionally, private schools can be as expensive as sending your kid to a private university.
Homeschooling is done for a variety of reasons, including: providing a higher quality of education than public or private schools can; offering more flexible schooling to children with mental disabilities; and yes, religious reasons.
Religious fundamentalists are most certainly not the only homeschoolers, however. 85 percent of homeschooling parents do so out of concern for their children's schooling environment. 65 percent do so because they believe they can provide a better education than traditional schools. On that note, parents who home school are significantly more likely to be more educated and hold an advanced degree than the national average. This is hardly what I'd consider an "ignorant religious fundamentalist parents."

Here are some more statistics.
http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2006/homeschool/TableDisplay.asp?TablePath=TablesHTML/table_4.asp
Out of nearly 1.1 million families surveyed, only 30% cite religious or moral reasons as their primary reason for homeschooling. Almost 50% homeschool primarily out of concern for public schools' learning environment or educational quality, and 14% do so because of special needs for their child.

rizzosbackAug 22, 2010
@masamnecyrus
And 72.9% say that providing religious or moral instruction is at least a part of why they're homeschooling. Pl;us the "environment" they're concerned about in public schools is an environment that doesn't teach you the Earth is 6,000 years old.
I'm not saying a certain subset of people who home school aren't perfectly reasonable intelligent people dissatisfied with the public school system. But most of them are just religious nuts who don't want anyone telling their kids that their beliefs are idiotic.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I was home schooled for a little while when I was in grade school. I don't remember why we were being home schooled, but I guarantee you it had absolutely nothing to do with religion.

b) Wouldn't the best strategy be to let all the kids get it, and get it over with?

They don't believe in f**king condoms. So they probably don't believe in vaccines.
suricouAug 22, 2010
They know condoms work. But they are quiverfull idiots - they believe it is their duty, a divine mandate, to produce as many children as they are physically capable of. Because every one is a gift from God, and they won't turn down such a gift.
heliumflashAug 22, 2010
Actually before they had their first kid the mother was on the Pill. After having their first kid they saw it as a gift from God and decided to produce as many kids as possible.
I wish she stayed on the Pill.

All of my siblings and I were homeschooled. All of us have attended or are attending college. My oldest sibling is working on her Masters, while my older brother has graduated college and is in the process of going to grad school for his Masters. I am in my junior year of college--double-majoring in two unrelated areas, no less--with the intent to go on to earn two Masters degrees and a dually-focused PhD. My younger brother is in his sophomore year of college and intends to go to grad school after he graduates.
We've all been straight-A students for the majority of our educational careers. Homeschooling is what allowed us the freedom to explore our interests and expand our universes while not bogging us down with days of drudgery and learning-by-memorization. I know dozens of families just like us.
rizzosbackAug 22, 2010
Where are they going to college, and are any of them studying biology or physics?
masamunecyrusAug 22, 2010
I am working on getting my PhD in Geophysics. Both my siblings were homeschooled for most of hteir K-12 career; one has graduated with a degree in IT and has a steady job in the medical industry, and the other is working on her Ph.D. in Psychology.
I, having gone to public and private schools (compared to my siblings that were homeschooled) for the majority of my K12 career, chose to be homeschooled in the 7th grade because I hadn't been challenged for the seven years I had been in school. Doing this allowed me the freedom to enter my university at the age of 13, and I now have a BA in Japanese and a BS in Physics from Purdue University -- one of the top 100 universities in the world and one of the best science and engineering universities in the USA. I am now working on my Ph.D. in Earthquake Geophysics.
My cousin was also homeschooled. He's completing his degree in Electrical Engineering. I have another cousin who has Asperger's Syndrome (on the closer end to autism on the scale) and he just graduated high school. He was tormented repeatedly at public schools for years (and they live on the nice side of town that has the best public schools in the state) before they finally homeschooled him, having seen my family and my other cousin's successes. He now is entering his first year at a prestigious engineering university for Civil Engineering with a full ride.

"I bet they want to make a movie about there family."
You are making such a great argument against homeschool...
benroyAug 22, 2010
There is no reason in modern society that any two parents should have nineteen (19) children.
If one of more of their children die from sickness, it's the parents fault for f**king with nature.
And it's the husband's fault for treating his wife's vagina as if it were a clown car.
I have nothing but contempt and disdain for this 'family'.
grammerpantsAug 22, 2010

Only child actually, I just don't waste my time worrying about what other people do, unless it directly affects my life. Having 19 kids isn't what I want, but they can 50 of them for all I care. They can afford it, it's more then I can say for some people that have one or two.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
suricouAug 22, 2010
They can afford it because they have so many. Their main source of income is TV shows and speaking appearances.
bonjovisucksAug 22, 2010
The family had money long before the show. Jim Bob Duggar is a successful real estate agent. He owns quite a bit of commercial property in Northwest Arkansas.
therednewtAug 22, 2010
@Suricou
Actually, unlike most of these shows, the Duggars probably don't need the money from the show to get by (although, I'm sure it has improved their quality of life). The dad is a former politician and now supports the family through real estate ownership. They didn't have show for a long time after having a ridiculous number of kids.
I wouldn't want so many kids and find them very strange, but it's not as if they believe everyone should have a ton of kids. They should probably stop soon because as she ages each pregnancy puts her and the child at greater risk.

The dugger family while strange doesn't really bother me.
Let them be strange, as long as they are supporting themselves, being productive and not racking up debt, living off the dole/welfare or costing tax payers then I really couldn't care less what they do.
I'm far more bothered by all the single moms living off welfare or broke families living off welfare who rack up thousands of debt and somehow manage to still by alcohol and all sorts of other unnecessary items and luxuries despite their lack of money.
Religious nuttery aside, the dugger family is far more responsible, disciplined and better off than probably the majority of families out there who can't get their **** together and are dysfunctional Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Some of you people are pitiful. So a couple decides to have a big family? Move out of your parent's basement and interact with real people. 'Contempt for the family', 'hoping they drop dead', 'hope for infertility'...you are a pitiful excuse for a human.
mhockey14221Aug 22, 2010
My problem is I don't think you could be very close to your parents when your parents attention is divided 19 ways. They have to use an appointment system to meet with their parents alone. What if they need advice for social issues at school or guidance in their career? There's no reason to have 19 children these days except for fundamentalist Christian reasons, and these children will never get decent attention from their parents.
s0nicfreakAug 22, 2010
Social issues at school? They are homeschooled.
gpaoneAug 22, 2010
Perhaps it is "fundamentalist Christian" reasons for having so many kids. But it's not anyone's business how many kids they have as long as they provide for them. Unless you are in the family or have an 'in', we don't know how well the kids needs are met personally...but from the few times I saw the show (because of my wife) they seem to be doing well. Some people like big families, some people like big TV's, some like big houses...as long as you can afford/support them there shouldn't be a problem.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
snareguy17Aug 22, 2010
So I thought it was ridiculous that they had as many kids as they did, but actually read up and looked at their website for the family. They're really not doing anything out of the ordinary, it's just with plenty more people in the house. I mean their house was built by themselves and is massive with plenty of space and appliance to accommodate everyone, and they live debt free. The only weird thing about all of it is the lack of public education since they're all home schooled.
Seriously, look at the pictures. I'd almost rather live there sometimes.

Who the f**k are the Duggars and why is chickenpox news.
Are the kids f**king one another?
did the mom go crazy and eat the one living in a bubble?
No? Then GTFO
suricouAug 22, 2010
The Duggars are a family famous for having many, many children - nineteen, last I heard, with another gestating. They believe they are under a religious command to breed to their physical limits, so the moment one pops out they start on the next. They are also professional attention whores, supporting their large family using payments from a TV show and speaking fees at Christian events.
ciliciousAug 22, 2010
I can't believe they skipped the chicken pox vaccination because of cost--maybe they just don't trust it?
The Quiverfull movement is crazy, and (whether or not we hear of them) I do think it has its innocent victims.
s0nicfreakAug 22, 2010
Or maybe they just see the pointlessness of it? There is no reason to bother to get a vaccine that may or may not work when the kids can just become immune for sure the natural way.
ciliciousAug 22, 2010
Could well be.
That's how my mom did it, and that's how I did it with my kids.
Difference being I was one of three, and I only had two kids.
What they've got is like a small classroom, but then they've probably had the stomach flu and who knows what else racing through their household.

Having so many children that your children have to raise their siblings has to be a detriment to having a normal teenage life (whatever that may be).
s0nicfreakAug 22, 2010
Uh, that has been going on for a long time, and for an even longer time before that, teens were getting married and starting their own families. It's your way of life that is not "normal". Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
thekilldoctorAug 22, 2010
If you enjoy living like it's 1710 go for it, no one's stopping you. I'm not criticizing YOU numb nuts. If you're in to having kids raising kids that's your choice to take away that child's chances of actually having interaction with a parent.
s0nicfreakAug 22, 2010
I think it's pretty funny that everyone is complaining both about the fact that the kids are homeschooled and (supposedly) can't get any one-on-one time with their parents. I'm sure "normal" kids spend TONS of one-on-one time with their parents while they're away at school... er wait... well I'm sure they get plenty of one-on-one time with their teachers to go over things they don't understand... ... uh... ok well at least while at school the older kids can help the younger kids with things they don't understand... .... ... hrmmm... If any other state would like to come and claim them, please feel free.

You might want to let your governor know that this family is causing lots of people to skip past this state when they decide to start a family(losing tax money) but they will also gain s**t tons of people that are just as backwards but don't feel bad every state and every country in every known populated planet in the galaxy has people like those.
I believe in letting people do what they wish but this family is forcing me to look like a snobby hypocrite for looking down on them :(

I've seen five minutes of one episode and I was ashamed for the race.
They brought their spawn to the creationism museum. The kids, when interviewed, said it was great because it "showed both sides of the story".
Nice to see homeschooling focusing on the important things in life, like believing in god and not using contraception.
doublebaconsodaAug 22, 2010
