No thanks to the corn lobby and Beef.inc
I guess they didn't use enough Ammonia to sterilise the meat.

Oh those big wigs at Bison meat HQ must pay...

Maybe if the feds subsidize grass we won't have this problem
Wait, you mean grass just grows?
jstock23Jul 4, 2010
Real news? Lame! I like this news better: http://www.theonion.com/video/usda-recalls-96000-pounds-of-tainted-beef-from-one,17638/
stuffradioJul 5, 2010
That's over 9,000 lbs!
coaster367Jul 4, 2010
I almost thought of that Onion video (96k pounds of beef)
surferessJul 4, 2010
What a waste of Bison, which BTW, I have never even seen or tasted, nor do I have any inclination to do so.

Holy cow, are you missing out.

Holy bison!
pagemapJul 4, 2010
Bison is great, you can use it with any recipe that needs ground beef. Bison is lower in fat than ground beef, and it also tastes great!
adml_shakeJul 4, 2010
I used to think the same thing, then my uncle cooked some for us at a cook out and I didn't find out until after. It was really really good.
protodonJul 4, 2010
It's delicious. A beefier tasting beef, if you will.
grungemusic3001Jul 4, 2010
Bison is actually pretty damn good. Its lean too.
akazJul 4, 2010
That's pretty cool, just kill 66,000 pounds worth of animals and throw them out.
cyborg31Jul 4, 2010
Would you rather eat the meat so it doesn't go to waste?
partrowJul 4, 2010
Sure, all you have to do is cook it beyond a certain temp to kill the ecoli.
akairennJul 4, 2010
66k is nothing. I used to kill around 250,000 pounds of animals just to throw out while playing Oregon Trail.
Leave in May, my wagon loaded with a spare wheel and as much ammunition as I could carry.
protodonJul 4, 2010
I hope your wife gets dystenery
TenderMeJul 4, 2010
66lbs is a lot of meat...
its a waste that it was contaminated...
wastelanderJul 4, 2010
I read about that somewhere. Apparently the family that bought it was rather upset.
antz0rzJul 4, 2010
In before some **** makes some pro-vegetarian remark.

We love you though Antz0rz...

I'm all for tomatoes and lettuce on a bison burger.
partrowJul 4, 2010
Why don't they irradiate meat with gamma rays?
No residual radiation, all bacteria gone.
amadeus2490Jul 4, 2010
Because you wouldn't like it when it's angry.
shinpahJul 4, 2010
I'd guess that'd be either stupid expensive, time consuming or have some effect on the meat itself
Closed AccountJul 5, 2010
I'm no bio chemist, but a heavy dose of radiation couldn't be good for the proteins in the meat. Remember, you are what you eat. Not sure I'd want to consume meat whose proteins and whatnot have been damaged by gamma rays.
Cooking meat with heat also changes the proteins, but this has been proven over thousands of years to be evolutionary beneficial to the human race. Gamma rays? Not so much.
drleephdJul 4, 2010
Some countries do. As I understand it, it isn't currently permitted by either the FDA or USDA for use on raw meat.
morcheebaJul 4, 2010
Down with big government!! This is a state issue us Coloradans can handle; nowhere in the constitution does it allow the federal government to recall beef. Free markets can solve this because the only people affected are the ones who don't test their beef.

I start to panic anytime I see a version of a story on the Onion the week before it occurs. It's going to be looked upon as an oracle years later.

The all knowing Onion, no one knows what secrets it holds within it's many many layers...
drleephdJul 4, 2010
I work as a butcher in a grocery meat shop. What is most disturbing to me is that this recall is based on "establishment number", and not just a particular lot number. This means all the meat ever produced at one of their processing facilities was considered to be contaminated.

Watch it, Rage, Write to Congress, work for campaigns who have taken its message.
(And for anybody in MN's 3rd District, I've talked to Jim Meffert about this exact issue and he was as pissed as me about it)

I was just in CO and at this place almost ordered a "bison burger" but then thought twice... DODGE!!!

>>"The sicknesses were reported between June 1 and"
For you, the day Bison graced your colon was the sickest day of your life.
But for me... it was Tuesday.
krandenJul 4, 2010
Lets take this meat and throw it at the homes of BP officials.
muffinmonkJul 4, 2010
Well, of the 96,000lbs of meat, they were only able to carry back 30,000. If they keep killing bison, the area will become scarce.
gooblyJul 4, 2010
This meat came from farmed bison, as does all other bison meat sold in the US.

So that's why she canceled her WoW account...
bertqbJul 5, 2010
Not a big deal. 66k of meat is what the average McDonald's will go through this weekend (give or take 65k)
calliganJul 5, 2010
That's what she said.
shodanxJul 5, 2010
E. Coli sickness ? what about fully cooking the meat before eating it !?
s0nicfreakJul 5, 2010
And how are you suppose to cook it without touching it and getting the e. coli on your hands?
shodanxJul 6, 2010
latex gloves ....
I don't use them , I just always clean my hands and touch nothing until I washed them down immediately after I touch raw meat, I thought everybody did that !!! but the other I was cooking with a friend and he said that was weird , like I was treating raw food like infected biohazard stuffs, which I am
I guess I was wrong ! not everyone treats raw meat as potentially infected .. hmm
s8m3gJul 5, 2010
...of your mom.
pentakleJul 5, 2010
That's what you get for eating meat.
asus3000Jul 5, 2010
So a few humans get sick.. The bison caught something worse: a steel rod through their brain..
gndoabJul 5, 2010
E. Coli is a nice way of saying, "There's s**t on your food."
doesn't sound nearly as nice, does it?
spooglyJul 6, 2010
