I hiked the "balds" in the Roan Highlands in TN back in the Spring. I'm not sure how much of the Appalachian Trail I was on throughout the hike but I do remember seeing a marker for the trail and I know at least part of the hike was the Appalachian Trail. Either way, it was a great hike and at nearly 6000 ft, the views were incredible.
