Surprised by Louisville making the list
mixmastakoozAug 19, 2010
Louisville is a cool town. Love the downtown bar district, museum district, and lots of great bourbon!
smpaisnutrientsAug 19, 2010
yeah louisville is pretty cool. its a lot cleaner then nashville but still dangerous enough to warrant carrying a piece. if you're ever on bardstown road, do yourself a favor and visit cafe 360. its an awesome hookah lounge with the best cheese steak i've ever had.

Personally I like the dreary winters...makes that Stumptown coffee even more awesome! Beats the hell out of snow. Drives some people completely nuts, though.

And as luck would have it, that's exactly when I met the girl of my dreams. Her name was Zelda. She was a calligraphy enthusiast with a slight overbite and hair the color of strained peaches. I'll never forget the first thing she said to me. She said "Hey, you got weasels on your face."

John Conzano

twodollarsAug 19, 2010
Unemployment is awful, yes.
But:
You think traffic is awful here? Go to LA or Seattle or most any place in the Bay Area. I have family come here from California, Philly, and Chicago and all they ever do is rave about our traffic. I'm glad to have our road / transit system.
jeffshaughtAug 19, 2010
Methinks someone needs to move then.
...just sayin'
robbiedoAug 19, 2010
Trying to discourage people from moving here. Although John Conzano is reason enough to move.

chiefbandit2200Aug 19, 2010
I live in Grand Rapids, and I was quite surprised to see it on this list... There has been a ton of development downtown in the last 5-10 years, but it's still pretty much just an okay place to live. I do love Lake Michigan though.
jeffshaughtAug 23, 2010
Grand Rapids is in the stranglehold of the Dutch Christian Reform. There needs to be a serious progressive change in order for it to see much growth.
pigtownAug 19, 2010
Providence sucks ass.
Needs more New Orleans and Austin, TX. If you love music (and who doesn't) start in those two places.
joejitsuAug 19, 2010
I used to live in Austin, and really liked it, but it's definitely overrated and not underrated.
lefty2006Aug 19, 2010
Portland!!
aquileriaAug 19, 2010
New York City is famous but it sucks... expensive, dirty, transient populations, crime, corporate, 3x more expensive than any other town/city in NY state, and even it's suburbs are dreary and outdated, the taconic pkwy is like driving on a highway designed for model T's...
iwriteyourmusicAug 19, 2010
You mentioned expensive twice. Bitter that you can't afford it here?
aquileriaAug 22, 2010
I haven't lived there since 1988 when a modest house in queens cost what a modest house in queens should cost. I live in Ulster County now where you can breathe clean air, and only drive to the city when I have to do field investigations there.
pinkfish411Aug 19, 2010
I agree. I've lived in and around NYC for the past few years, and I'd take any of the other cities on the list over it. Sure, there's a lot of stuff to do here, and I'm glad I've spent some time here, but there's no way in hell I'd want to settle down permanently here. Unless you're rich, it's just not worth it, and if I were rich, I'd much rather be nestled up in the mountains somewhere.
alceste1978Aug 19, 2010
Top two reasons this article sucks:
1. Everyone hates slideshows.
2. Baltimore is a actually a s**thole.
greenpushpinsAug 19, 2010
Is it? I've always wanted to check it out but every time I bring it up to someone, I never hear anything good. There must be some pros to living there.
alceste1978Aug 19, 2010
Yes. I only went there once for half-a-day, but....all I remember are sooty brick buildings, a smelly, cold bay, a baseball stadium that I had no interest in walking inside of, and dangerous looking alleyways.
rujtuAug 19, 2010
Baltimore is a great city in the same way D.C. is. One area is amazing; go two blocks and you're in the depths of ghettodom. The key is not to go those two blocks. Follow that simple direction, and you'll love the city.
jj9nerAug 19, 2010
Same with Minneapolis.
*Highly overrated "attractions"
.*Zero nightlife for 20-30 somethings.
*Restaurants are ABOMINATIONS of bland food when compared with a city like Chicago.
*Cold as hell and lots of snow half the year.
*The other half the year is humid as hell (land o' 10,000 lakes) and road construction is EVERYWHERE because winter kills the roads.
*"Minnesota Nice" is largely not a reality. People are much nicer up north and in areas that rely on tourism.
*Traffic is terrible. Not near as bad as Atlanta, but still pretty bad.
*Housing still kinda overpriced considering the next point.
*Salaries aren't very high for a large metro area and we've actually been losing jobs for about 10 years now.
atarioAug 25, 2010
Slideshows are not bad as long as they're AJAXed.

I've grown up in Pittsburgh, and can't wait to leave.
pyros7Aug 19, 2010
Milwaukee? Beer and Dairy? Sure Miller is based there, but so what? You can get Miller beers anywhere in the country except St. Louis (trust me I've tried, very embarrassing). And the last time I was there I remember seeing a lot more ghettos than milk cows. Rural Wisconsin makes dairy - Milwaukee is a failing rust belt city belt city with all the charm of Detroit.
What the hell was this list based on?
mixmastakoozAug 19, 2010
As a place to visit, I thought it was cool. Good museums. Plenty of sports to watch. One of my favorite restaurants, a spy-themed place called the Safe House, is there. And, great selection of beer at the bars!

Since when has Portland been underrated?
oxidaneAug 19, 2010
Milwaukee? Come the f**k on... these places are s**t-holes.
kdx200riderAug 19, 2010
Apparently the author has never been to Pittsburgh, yuk.
krazymon2Aug 19, 2010
Yeah I know what you mean between PNC Park, Heinz Field, Consol Energy Center, Carnegie History Museum, The Pittsburgh Zoo, Kennywood, South-Side Drinking, Andy Warhol, The Aviary, the Incline, plus the thousands of students attending Pitt, Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, Point Park, Carlow among others in the surrounding area make Pittsburgh such a bore.
Not to mention it's really cheap to live there because the cost of living is lower than most places. Besides the above mentioned there is a ton to do in the surrounding parks such as bike trails and hiking. Could go on but no point when you are just ignorant about what a great city Pittsburgh really is.
miquonranger031Aug 19, 2010
And who the hell puts fries in a sandwich anyway?! So disgusting.

yacksAug 19, 2010
All that stuff that you can do outside and around the city can be said of any city...except you need to insert their specific activities..
ptbus0Aug 19, 2010
Pittsburghs great minus the Yinzers and the roads. I live in East Liverpool and I make the 110 mile trip to Cleveland whenever I want to ride a roller coaster or grin at a walrus. There's just something I can't stand about this place.
krazymon2Aug 21, 2010
I'm in Beaver :)
mrgerbekAug 19, 2010
Portland is underrated? That's news to us. The steady stream of jobless 20-40 year olds must be for some other reason.

Where is Detroit. If any city is underrated it has to be the one where you can buy a house for 2,000 dollars.
jsb1984Aug 19, 2010
Memphis says hello.
bshenskyAug 19, 2010
Where is Detroit? If any city is underrated it has to be the one where you can buy a house, tear it down, and start your own farm.
You'll have to, too, since there are no major shopping centers left in the city.
randall814Aug 19, 2010
You can drive 10 minutes to get to one of the many large shopping districts in the burbs.
bshenskyAug 19, 2010
Of course you can. But you don't have to in Boston, San Francisco, New York, Philedelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, Atlanta, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Houston, Phoenix or Minneapolis.
Ironically, I'm actually rooting for the disassembly of Detroit, not because I hate it, but because I love it. Detroit it dysfunctional by design, whipped apart by the whims of manufacturing trends, booms and busts come and gone, with the population and municipal governance booms and busts that go with it. Most cities never deteriorate so much as to warrant a complete rebuild, but Detroit's very nature mandates that it should - it _must_ - charter one. We've seen so much of this already in the neighborhoods and factorylands that have been turned into brownfields, only to be gobbled up by developers that have raised up new 21st-century-grade cul-de-sac-tinged single-family-homed subdivisions.
My biggest criticisms are manifest in education and mass transit. Without these, the city doesn't stand a chance.
atarioAug 25, 2010
But the downside is you have to live in Detroit.
zenerdiodeAug 19, 2010
Bulls**t.
I lived in Baltimore, Little Rock, and Sacramento. You know how bad those places are? I prefer living in San Jose. Yeah...that bad.
mrmoenAug 19, 2010
You should probably just kill yourself.

/[whisper] no she's not. be very afraid of old vietnamese women.
korvan504521Aug 19, 2010
Kansas City is meh.
mixmastakoozAug 19, 2010
I think some of the commenters forget that some of these places are nice visit (which seemed to be the focus of the article) but not necessarily optimal places for young people to live. I've visited 10 of the cities on the list, and with the exception of Houston, enjoyed my stay by going to the local attractions and bars. The cities that surprised me when I visited: Little Rock, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, and Louisville.
miamiflashfanAug 19, 2010
What exactly surprised you about Milwaukee? I can't think of anything that would make you want to come here unless you're a huge art lover.
mixmastakoozAug 19, 2010
Well, art is great, but I'd love to see a Brewers game, I enjoyed the bars/restaurants downtown, the science museum was cool. I bet there's more to do with outdoor cultural events during the summer. I really liked the Safe House downtown--what a fun dining experience! Don't shortchange Milwaukee. It's a cool place to visit!
miamiflashfanAug 20, 2010
It can be nice during the summer at the lakefront with Summerfest/ ethic festivals, and Miller Park is great, but I don't really think it gives you the full big city experience. And only a small, small percentage of the city is nice, and what you've mentioned above is about all we have to offer.
/pessimistic resident
edubble79Aug 19, 2010
Albuquerque sucks.... tell me something fun to do in Albuquerque???? The balloon festival only happens once a year and thats the only thing thats even remotely cool, I know I am from the area. Santa Fe owns Albuquerque in every way and even thats for old people who are trying to spend thier money before they die.
Denver owns almost every city on this list; We have skiing within an hour during the winter, Summers are sunny and gorgeous with plenty of lakes for water activity. Marijuana is legal (in small quantities) need I say more? The girls live for a warm day when they can skimp it out (they act like they don't know we have 300 days of sun a year). Dude's in Denver are fairly douchey and all the gay fanfare is a bit dizzying but other than the scads and scads of soccor moms texting while driving huge SUV's everywhere, its cool. Boulder is only 30 minutes away (girls and partying everywhere). The best thing about Denver is the drinking scene, we party so huge and we will drink you under the table because we are used to the elevation and you are not, then when we go to your city we will drink you under the table (first few days) since our bodies are used to higher elevation.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
hurricanedcAug 19, 2010
If it's got a bunch of douches then it should be nuked, not placed on a list of good cities.
d3dmAug 19, 2010
I'm not surprised that Houston made the list. The sooner I can get out of Seattle and back to Houston the happier I'll be. This Left Coast lifestyle ain't my cup of tea.
karbrinoAug 19, 2010
Tell me the lifestyle... what different between Seattle and Houston?
acid_jazzAug 19, 2010

scabnabbitAug 19, 2010
I love Houston, but fair warning: The humidity is insane and so is the traffic.
Love to check out Portland.
Lastly, sorry but Little Rock is kinda s**tty.
austicAug 25, 2010
Funny thing is...it actually has. The only thing that takes away from the city is the trailer-esque style Bill Clinton presidential library.
needcoffeeAug 19, 2010
I'd add Toledo or Columbus Ohio or Pittsburg pa
yacksAug 19, 2010
There is a Pittsburg Pa as well??
Closed AccountAug 19, 2010
I agree with you about Columbus, it's really awesome down on OSU campus on High Street. Havent spent much time in Toledo, but it looks promising from what I remember.
ptbus0Aug 19, 2010
Yinzers ruin Pittsburgh for me.. I live in between Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Columbus the closest being Pittsburgh by a long shot. Columbus definitely deserves to be on a list like this but I'd say it has one of the top surrounding areas because of the cluster of amazing state, national? parks. I've been trying to go to Hocking Hills forever now.
I actually think Cleveland should be on this list just because of how it's rumored to be the worst place in America yet it's actually just your average typical city that LA and Miami enjoy kicking down the street.
needcoffeeAug 19, 2010
Hocking Hills is wonderful, went on vacation there last year and was probably the most peaceful moment in my life. Let alone all of the wonderful places to go hiking around there.
furdienosferatuAug 19, 2010
I've heard from a lot of my friends who have traveled through Albuquerque that it's cool as s**t.
I'd really like to move to Portland OR though.
bossdj26Aug 19, 2010
Albuquerque isn't cool as s**t, it's just s**t... I've been living in Abq for over 3 years now, and no, people are not the nicest you'll ever meet (like it says on the slide). Say you go to a restaraunt, it's more along the lines of "what do you want, why are you bothering me at my place of work, let me f**k your food up and get it to you sometime next week." Although, in this recent down economy, I'll admit that customer service has really improved, but the town moto is still "Do it tomorrow...".
I love Portland though, born and raised there. People are hella nice in Portland, but we are part snob, too. I'm guessing it stems from a mix of the hippie-culture intertwined with the hipster-culter, which is pretty hard to avoid there. And I f**king miss drinking Rubinator at the Kennedy School...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
stillhateyouAug 19, 2010
Albuquerque sucks if you dont work at the Labs or Intel, and even then...
antonkoolaidAug 19, 2010
What the hell is going on here?
Why am I the only person that is bothered by the fact this article is CLEARLY 15 CITIES!!
Also, I live in Portland and most breweries per capita isn't the best part. The best part is that gets paired up with having the most strip clubs per capita as well. Best. Combo. Ever.

Iron, have you ever known anyone who stayed at the attached hotel/motel? It looks like they took a 50s hotel and updated it very, very well. I have always wondered what it would be like to stay there but we normally stay downtown.
ironhideAug 21, 2010
Afraid not, I've been to the Fir for a couple of shows but never stayed there.

Well, next time I'm in town I'll stay there and let you know.
Also, there is a New Orleans style restaurant and bar called "Eat, an Oyster Bar" that has a sunday bloody-mary bar that was awesome. Highly suggested if you haven't been. It was in what used to be a pretty bad part of town but had been reworked and is nice now. Take a look if you haven't been and enjoy live jazz. The food was so damn good we took pictures of it!

ripple01Aug 19, 2010
Not going to say it is my favorite American city, but I thought Burlington was a great town when I visited a few years ago. Nice people, downtown area had a nice vibe to it, and that part of Vermont is just beautiful!
