I have so many epic memories surrounding FF7 and FF8. Maybe it was the era - like before the interwebz and work soaked up all of my spare time. Maybe I just outgrew the classic snes style RPG. But I couldn't even finish FF9. Didn't like the story. Didn't like the characters. Do remember playing through chrono cross around that time - so maybe it was just just that FF9 was bad.
At one point in time though - those were some of the best games yet made.

9 is WAY better than 8 and brings back some of the old school stuff. It actually felt like a FANTASY game. FF8 has an awful story, lazily made characters and the only redeeming qualities are the music and Triple Triad.

a bit of revisionist history going on here. I took a look at metacritic and noticed that 9 has a higher score than 8 these days. meribian are you old enough to have played both of them when they came out? 9 was the first FF game to really get killed in the gaming press. I remember gamepro was the only magazine to give it a high score. The respected reviewers (like next generation and gamespot) hammered it. The slam against it was mainly against the story. And I still agree with them.

Plenty of other works of art were ignored or even critically reviled upon their release, re-examined years later, and given their due respect. Final Fantasy VIII had what was hot and trendy at the time, whereas IX stuck to more timeless themes, and IX holds up better.

I miss the traditional JRPG. Turn based RPGs are dead. Tragic, really. I would love to play another FFIX or Dragon Quest game.

They just put too much money into them into the graphics now. I look forward to almost any handheld jrpg more than one coming to the systems now.
I thought I would love actually talking but since some of the games got it I realized I can read much faster than they speak and i just want them to shut up so I can get back to playing the game.
I wish they would start creating new ones with some snes/original playstation type games and release them on XBLA or PSN.

final fantasy IX would have been a million times better if the char's weren't stupid animals... that was a turn off.
