Well that doesn't really change much... We were already waiting for a new game.
chomskyknows2Mar 31, 2011
it does say to look for a rumored Half-Life hint in Portal2, which really should have been the title of this story...
TomkinsMar 31, 2011
like references to black mesa in the first game
animexApr 1, 2011
Valve might not be done, but most gamers are. PC gamers couldn't care less now about Gordon Freeman and HL2/3/4.
d0x360_Apr 1, 2011
rofl what is your basis for this "theory"? If you think time kills a gamers interest in something allow me to introduce you to a little sleeper game i call Duke Nukem Forever.
animexApr 1, 2011
I think with any franchise if its either over-serviced (Star Trek) or under-serviced (HL2) you'll hurt the franchise. If something for HL comes out, I will probably play it, but I'm far past the point of caring/hoping. If it never comes out, there's plenty of other games/franchises to follow.
d0x360_Apr 1, 2011
I think you will find you're in a very small minority and I'd bet just about anything if you liked the series you will buy whatever comes next.
ultramegafilmsApr 1, 2011
WTF are you talking about? Why are you s**tting all over a company that doesn't give a s**t how long it takes to do something right? I f**king love Half Life. If 3 comes out 10 years from now, I will pre-order that s**t.
animexApr 1, 2011
Lol -- i dunno what hard-on people get when they wait 4 years to get a game they finish in one weekend. Their rate of production on that game is insanely slow for what it is. Sure, I've never been disappointed but they've got to speed up development if they want to maintain interest. They are releasing "episodes" in the time-frames other companies release entire titles and MMOs. You can perfect forever and never be done. At some point you gotta compromise and push it out the door. If HL3 does come out in 10 years, I'm sure you won't be talking about it until it does come out.
ultramegafilmsApr 2, 2011
The folks over at Valve are laughing at you. I understand what you are saying, but that's not what's happening. While you may not think the HL games are all that, so many people boldly disagree with you. They (Valve) and their games (eg. Half Life) have a reputation for not only pushing the technological edge of the envelope, but also for their attention to detail and narrative.
Don't be a hater. I am glad that there is a variety. If they want to wait long periods of time between releases to perfect their product, then I will give them full price, knowing damn well I can steal it. Ever drink Scotch? That takes time right?
anub1sMar 31, 2011
No surprise here, all we want to know is when it's going to release. Then we will plan about 1.5 years after that supposed date due to the Valve time factor.
d0x360_Apr 1, 2011
Your Valve equations are spot on my good Sir.
norman619Mar 31, 2011
But I am done with Valve if they do as the other developers are doing and develop for the console and port to the PC.
blacklistipMar 31, 2011
Really it is very interesting
Closed AccountMar 31, 2011
Why would they abandon such a successful franchise for so long? Must be idiots in management that don't like money.
timthetaxmanMar 31, 2011
Probably too busy counting all the money they are making with Steam.

And the other games that the studios they swallow up develop. Portal, Portal 2, Counter-Strike (to a much lesser extent), Left4Dead and Left4Dead2, Day of Defeat, so on, so forth...
celtic18honorApr 1, 2011
Swallow up has such a negative connotation, I think integrate is a more apt term. Valve comes from and greatly supports the modding community so it makes sense that they hired the people who made games that they thought had potential to be properly fleshed out given the backing of Valve's resources.
cuervoman914Apr 1, 2011
This creates hype, whih in turn creates sales. This is the Mario of valve, they didn't forget about it at all. This isn't activision, who unlike valve, kills franchises out of pure saturation. Sales of valves games go on for years, not seasons
d0x360_Apr 1, 2011
The 2 replies you have already are great answers that I agree with but im hoping the reason is a little bigger. Im hoping its because we are going to see either a brand new Source Engine or a highly updated one.
Source is great at pushing pretty textures but its lacking a bit in the shader dept compared to modern engines so you gotta assume they have been tweaking it.
Of course even if the engine is exactly the same I dont care the game will still be awesome.
legoman513Apr 1, 2011
I'm pretty sure that they've just been waiting for technology to advance a fair bit while working on a significant new iteration of Source (like GoldSRC -> Source progression, not one of the smaller graphical updates). I would not be surprised at all if the next release is not Episode 3 but an entire Half-Life 3.
menellomApr 1, 2011
Honestly going with a full game makes the most sense from a narrative perspective - simply put there's too much ground to cover in the Combine-arc to cram it all into a single episode... but at the same time there's not quite enough to stretch it out into an episode and a full game on top of that, not without severely diluting the story.
timthetaxmanMar 31, 2011
I remember when I was big into playing half-life 2, I was walking through a store and I heard a radio that one of the employees had for a price check or something. My first instinct when I heard that radio chatter was to look around for cover. That’s when you know you have been playing a game too much.
gamekudosMar 31, 2011
Good news though not surprising, HF1 and HF2 are amazing games hitting levels to be aspired to in their time.
slizzoMar 31, 2011
What in Sam Diggity is HF1 and HF2? I thought we were talking about Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2? (HL1, HL2)
gamekudosMar 31, 2011
LOL ... yes did mean HL1 and HF2
gamekudosMar 31, 2011

My god man if you're going to use the wrong abbreviation for a game at least have enough self respect not to double post!
gamekudosApr 1, 2011
Well ... mistakes will happen, don't tell me you've not made any.
entroperMar 31, 2011
No surprise that this is taking a long time. Valve went through how many iterations on TF2? It was in development for a decade. If they don't think that what they came up with is awesome, they scrap it and start again. That's why everything they produce comes out golden.
flashbangseerMar 31, 2011
Valve and Blizzard, really two of the only developers I have faith in anymore.
deathray2kApr 1, 2011
I don't have any faith left in Blizzard... Since being acquired by Activision they're making all sorts of crazy decisions about how they sell their products. Yeah, they're still very good games, but that doesn't change the fact that they're f**king the gamer.
dvddesignApr 1, 2011
Gearbox? Borderlands was a consistently pleasing title that I'm still playing now.
AND they'll go down in history as the company that released Duke Nukem Forever.
...provided that it actually does come out.
nickbc87Apr 1, 2011
Bioware (as long as it's the Mass Effect series. DA2 doesn't count.)
mizuhochanMar 31, 2011
I don't believe them.
rogue100Mar 31, 2011
I'm hoping the delay is indicative of a full blown HL3, rather than HL2:E3, but whichever it is, it can't come soon enough.
And, if it seems like it's been awhile since the last iteration, remember how long the wait between HL1 and HL2 was, with nothing else coming out of Valve during that time to fill the void (it really seemed for awhile like Valve, and its HL franchise, were dead in the water), then this doesn't seem that bad.
deathray2kApr 1, 2011
The wait then was 6 years. It has already been 7 years since HL2 came out. Sure, they've released the episodes since then, but it's still been 4 years since HL2:E2, so it's not that far off. Especially since they're still cagey about what's coming, and we can probably expect at least another year after they announce it before it's released! So it's really not far off from the HL1 to HL2 timeframe at this point.

Episodic content, my ass
theblackdartApr 1, 2011
I don't know why you were downvoted, you are just telling it exactly like it is. Sounds like exactly what they did with Left 4 Dead when they claimed it would have so much free content and then they released Left 4 Dead 2 as a full-priced stand alone game with nothing more than a few new maps, weapons, and characters. This article is a joke, they BETTER not be done with Gordon. They might be able to just release Portal or Left 4 Dead games every year or two, but eventually it's the innovation that brings them back into the limelight.
celtic18honorApr 1, 2011
Really =\ CRY SOME MORE
It's not like Valve added versus mode for 2 maps, and survival mode with 16 maps, one of which was brand new, and Crash Course, and The Passing, and The Sacrifice, and a massive and awesome digital comic to go with the Sacrifice, and a full SDK with allowing users to create custom content.
Oh yeah and ALL FOR FREE
Also Portal 1 came out 4 years ago...
theblackdartApr 1, 2011
Close to around the time that HL2:Episode 2 came out and they chose to focus on portal and left 4 dead because the whole episodic content thing wasn't working as intended. And they had said that Left 4 Dead one would have all these things added to it for free, not buying another game for full price to finally get the free content that was already promised.
melthornalApr 1, 2011
Your facts are off, by a lot.
L4D was promised to have several game updates. It has. It had several massive UI updates; dozens multiplayer fixes, balances and tweaks; multiple map releases; and dozens of patches.
L4D2 isn't a minor upgrade, it is an entire new game engine. The horribly ignorant and misinformed look upon L4D2 and say it superficially looks like L4D. Of course it does, it is a sequel. However, under the hood, there are significant differences, not the least of which is a new game engine. New game engine = new game.
Now you ask yourself, why has a game like TF2 had SO MANY GAME PLAY UPDATES (many, many, many new maps, items, et cetera) while L4D and L4D2 had very few, relatively speaking?
The answer is very simple: the updates to TF2 are almost universally player made content. The "official" map releases are all player made. The majority of the weapon releases are player made. The vast majority of the hat releases are player made.
People just aren't making content for L4D and L4D2 on anywhere near the same level as TF2. Don't like it? Well, then start making content yourself.
I have made several TF2 maps and brought them through to a high level of completion (aka, about 99% done, although do you ever really finish a map?). I have done the same for L4D and L4D2. I can tell you this, L4D and L4D2 are the biggest pain in the ass to map and develop for.
TF2 is a relatively easy game to develop for. Keeping a balanced map and gameplay is very simple. No spaces that are too open, lots of cover, multiple routes, lots of unique high and low areas for soldiers and scouts to exploit, and carefully thought out distances between capture points/areas and spawn location. This is all very easy to plan and map.
L4D and L4D2 are significantly more complicated. You must create nonlinear maps that offer explicit linear direction. You must make it nearly impossible to get lost at all times. You must balance player survival against how much fun you will award to the infected players. You must take into account and balance random item drops, namely ammo and health.
Then, on top of it all, you must do this for three to five maps! Thats the kicker.
The vast majority of people aren't willing to take on this kind of project. Why spend 300 hours building a L4D campaign when you can spend 60 hours building a TF2 map that will ultimately have 10 times as many players using it?

Playing through Half Life 2 for the first time. I'm sure this will get some negative thumbs down, but so far I find it rather generic besides the Gravity Gun. In Ch. 6, hoping it picks up, otherwise, don't care if they release a sequel.
celtic18honorApr 1, 2011
The game definitely gets better from there as you're exposed to more of the narrative which is a big part of the game, also you do have to consider that HL2 is from 2004, and gaming mechanics and storytelling have evolved a lot in 7 years. Compared to today's games it does seem a bit generic but that comes from the things that made HL2 special have been integrated into most modern games, similarly to how Gears of War's regenerative health is everywhere these days. For a better comparison go replay Halo 2, because they launched at almost the same time =]
xcwarriorApr 1, 2011
I don't need to play Halo 2 to know it's a bald space marine in a suit shooting up aliens. Story over.
I'm good at remembering games from a certain era, it's just I'm not the biggest FPS fan in the world, but was hoping this one was a lot different. If there is more story coming, great, because so far it feels like, "Hey, you got dropped in this slave city. Go shoot up some aliens and find your friends."
Graphics mean nothing to me, game mechanics are reat, I can tell they are top notch from that era. My issue has been fun factor thus far.
celtic18honorApr 1, 2011
lol yeah that's Halo 2 for ya =]
Yeah, I'm not going to lie, the part of the game that you said you were in was a point where I actually put the game down for a while, it was definitely a slow first act IMO. There is still a lot of game to be had, and some very interesting developments. Also, the 2 episodes add a substantial amount of story to the game. Also I had just read 1984 when I first played it so I was kinda in that dystopian oppressive mindset ;]
evildeadashApr 1, 2011
At this point they better release Episode 3 and HL3 at the same damn time. I won't wait another year or two for Ep. 3 to come out then have to wait another 2-5 years for HL3 to show up. Bah!
Philly_mktgApr 1, 2011
They take there time and make perfect games. if you really think they are “testing the waters” you are wrong. They already know this game will be huge.
