devicemag.com — If you use a PC and a games console you have probably noticed how much more comfortable gaming is with a controller than with a keyboard and mouse. Given that many games are also available for PC, it would make sense for a standard PC game controller to be developed.

shingoexJan 13, 2011
Depends on the game, actually. Fighting games and platformers are a hassle for me to play with kb/m.
philbertJan 13, 2011
Definitely Assassin's Creed is big pain to play with mouse / keyboard, however CoD: Black Ops is best with it.
neurokrashJan 13, 2011
I'm sure I am not alone in the sentiment that the main reason a console does not appeal to me is the inability to play certain types of games with a mouse and keyboard. The article makes it sound as if gamepads are more comfortable for everyone, when it is really a matter of personal preference, and gamepads on the PC are nothing new. I believe that no one controller is ideal for all games, least of all a gamepad, IMHO.
jacksons98Jan 13, 2011
Also driving games if you don't own a wheel. Keyboard just feels dumb.
themazzterJan 13, 2011
This was my first thought exactly. Mice are pretty much critical to playing FPSs; with other modes of input turn speed is either too slow or aiming too imprecise. But with a mouse you have a much broader range of motion so you can turn quickly and aim precisely.
ncinerateJan 13, 2011
I might be in the minority here, but I actually prefer shooters where my enemies are slightly handicapped by joysticks.
The reason? Mouse+Keyboard setups gives snipers the UNHOLY ability to take my face off at extreme range with stunning accuracy. Any game that gives snipers a one-shot-kill ability AND a mouse/keyboard is virtually unplayable once the local snipers get a feel for the rifle. Some games mitigate this in a good way (like team fortress 2, where you need to charge up a shot in order to kill with a headshot - eliminating quick scoping). Other games become absolutely crappy (think counterstrike during the heyday of the AWP where you couldn't even peek your head out without some 12 year old idiot savant taking it off).
So there you have it, I love mouse+keyboard as much as the next guy but unless the game takes steps to avoid quick scope slaughter I prefer gaming with a joystick.
Joysticks are the great equalizer.

diversity is always better! i say role with what you want, if you want to use a steering wheel or a guitar to play COD then who are we to say u cant?
atomic1fireJan 13, 2011
Unless guitars get motion support, I don't see how that works.
Ill be the first person to admit I once tried to play a james bond game with a guitar hero controller, but they leave out certain buttons on the controller, and the wammy bar only does some movement, not a whole lot.
In short, you would be better off with a wiimote and nunchuck.
elmuerte17Jan 14, 2011
No kidding. About the only games I prefer with a controller are racing and platformers.
jo21Jan 14, 2011
ps3 ahve mouse keyboard support, but its disable by third party, unreal tournment had it implemented
admiraljimbobJan 13, 2011
"If you use a PC and a games console you have probably noticed how much more comfortable gaming is with a controller than with a keyboard and mouse."
Can't say I have.
theblacklotusJan 13, 2011
I agree. Id much rather have a KB/M. I would hate to use a controller on my pc, unless im using an emulator or something.
norman619Jan 13, 2011
And then you'd likely get a special control for your sim not the PS3/360 controller.
scwatsonJan 13, 2011
I've been using mine for a while, was a pain in the ass to set up, most drivers didn't work and the setup I have now only works if you disable driver signature enforcement while the computer is booting.
quinny707Jan 13, 2011
I had the same problem but used a program called "Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider" to enable test mode in windows 7. Now I don't have to disable driver signature enforcement every time I want to use it. You can also use it to manually sign the drivers.
atomic1fireJan 13, 2011
I was able to get it working reletively quickly,
Amazing what changes in two years time.
they just recently got driver support in motioninjoy, so all that crap is handled.
farkoughJan 13, 2011
Yeah, I tried this. They've been able to sign the drivers, so you don't need to fiddle about with settings while booting, but it still didn't work and ended up shafting my USB keyboard and mouse. Ended up having to use System Restore to get things working again.
If you have Logitech kit, don't use this.
futurepocketJan 13, 2011
I disagree, for first person shooter games, I much prefer the standard keyboard and mouse, it's just much easier to aim. Maybe for other games, like San Andreas, I could use a PS3 controller, but why wouldn't I just play it on the PS3?
norman619Jan 13, 2011
I tried GTA on the PS3 and found I preferred the KB+M to the console controller.
philbertJan 13, 2011
Maybe you received it as a gift, or got it as a really good deal or even free for PC. I got Borderlands for free with my OnLive membership, got Braid free as well, and Assasin's Creed II at a really cheap price.
norman619Jan 13, 2011
"If you use a PC and a games console you have probably noticed how much more comfortable gaming is with a controller than with a keyboard and mouse"
I find the keyboard and mouse to be far more intuitive than the basic console controller. I have a PS3, 360, and a gaming PC. On the consoles if I don't play for a few days and then come back I have to get used to the controls all over again. On the PC I can stop playing for a month, which happened last year, and come back and no need to get used to the controls.
nuhausJan 13, 2011
The Xbox360 PC adaptor has been out for years and works just fine. I wish attaching a KB/M to my console were as easy.
norman619Jan 13, 2011
No kidding. I was disappointed when I got the PS3 KB only to learn you can't use it on any of the games I wanted to use it on. It's sad that a $10 KB is a better controller than the $50 console controller.
philbertJan 13, 2011
I've been using MotionInJoy to do this for a long time. In fact I was just using it last night top play Assasin's Creed II on OnLive

atomic1fireJan 13, 2011
He's right.
I managed to get my ps3 controller to play a pc game while it was charging.
Awesome use of the spare usb port.
karoooJan 13, 2011
I cant use it wirelessly with my laptop
mizuhochanJan 13, 2011
I'd only use it to emulate PS2/1.
trax852Jan 13, 2011
I've been using a type of PS2/3 controller for a few years now.
The GGE909 http://cdn3.ioffer.com/img/item/149/725/233/g_53lo.jpg
Very nice, it's got a USB flat cable that zips into the controller when
not in use. 16+ Programmable buttons.
dubbsaccJan 13, 2011
Check out the Logitech Rumblepad 2, that's what I use.
Malcolm_CoxJan 13, 2011
I prefer the xbox controller. Can you do the same with that?
norman619Jan 13, 2011
They are essentially the same thing. It sounds like you don't know but you have been able to use your xbox controller on Windows for a while now.
mochan4242Jan 13, 2011
I'd like to be able to control it with my mind.
mercanoJan 13, 2011
Or just plug in a wired XBox 360 controller and it will work automatically. Some games like GTA4 or Arkham Asylum will even change the on-screen button prompts to match the controller. (Round green circle with an A on it, tall white rectangle with a little RT on it...)
nascenttJan 13, 2011
RTFA. They mention Xbox controllers.
nascenttJan 13, 2011
Random. Why the hell is this frontpage? This isn't new, you've been able to connect a controller by USB for ages now, there's even ways of getting bluetooth to work with a PC, though they don't even mention it.
crispytownJan 14, 2011
If I can't use my Atari 2600 controller (Worlds Best Controller Ever) then I dont need a console controller. Give me keys/mouse, or give me death!
Closed AccountJan 14, 2011
Now if only i could use a PS controller for my XBOX... I might actually start playing fighting games again.
evildeadashJan 15, 2011
I love keyboard and mouse snobs. Sorry to let you guys in on the joke but keyboard and mouse suck at quite a bit. There are MANY games that almost certainly require analog precision to play them without having a stroke. Driving games, for example, SUCK MOOSE BALLS on KB&M. Fighting games are impossible; Same with Platformers. What about the simple transition of walking and running in a some games? Nope, it's one or the other and no in-between when using KB&M. I use whatever tool gets the job done with the least frustration and to not use a controller *just because* it's a controller is stupid.
spdk1Jan 15, 2011
might have to try this

For anyone wondering how to actually use your ps3 controller on your pc, I followed this tutorial: http://ps3controllerwindows7.com/
I had a hard time finding a good tutorial for it so hopefully it will be useful to someone.
