I'm all for free-to-play games... but it has to be done well. It's old school, but Kingdom of Loathing did a fantastic job of being a story-driven free-to-play RPG but with monthly new content being accessible by micro-transactions. It kept the game fresh and it was at the right price point.
Evony, on the other hand, had very little actual gameplay or story and the micro-transaction system got in the way of what little it had. By paying, you could speed up game events. Imagine taking a week (real-time, but while logged out) to build a town hall or spending $5. That's not the right value proposition. That's grind avoidance...

DDO is the good kind too, imo. New content can be purchased. They aren't selling the epic gear, but they sell conveniences for folks that have work/family and spend less time but want to keep up with friends. I.e. temporary xp boosts, respec options, and some crafting materials that you would have to grind for days to find (though you'll pay big dollars for these last items).
They also have a system where you can earn the same currency by in game play and buy them yourself without cash which encourages the free to play crowd to invest more time in the game (and keep the community large as a result).

Everyone should boycott Digg on Monday.

that could mean v4 will stick as new users will not be part of this revolt. i suspect there will be some new diggers who will find this site in the coming days and be quite happy with the familiar format, especially if they are big twitterers.
if we continue the revolt the new users will be warned what a terrible thing kevin has done to the existing users and be be more likely to shy away.
i say continue the revolt until v3 is reverted. anything else is completely unacceptable.

I'm always up for something free-to-play but if it sucks, I wouldn't touch the game again...

I suppose it beats moving refrigerators and installing color TVs...

Turbine sucks. They can go away forever. I hope this move burys them.
I'd bury the article, but I don't know how to do that on new digg.

Free-to-play with microtransactions can only be fun if the developers design the system such that spending real money doesn't create a huge economic gap between players who pay and players who don't. Some kind of gap is likely inevitable, but if it's too big then new players who are attracted to the idea of free-to-play will just get frustrated and won't get into the game enough to want to spend any real money on it.

The system has been going on for Dungeons and Dragons online for a year now and there isn't any disparity between have and have nots. In fact, if you are a patient player, they set up a system where you could "earn" points and buy the same content without cash.
But for folks that have a job/family and want to play a couple times per week, it sure is nice not having to feel like we're neglecting a $15/month subscription if we have a busy work week. And the "items" they sell are either content, character visual customizations or a fee to respec so you don't have to grind out a whole new character (that you don't have time for).
The other items are XP boosts (if you play less but want to keep up with friends you can buy temporary boosts that give you 20% extra XP so you can level a little faster) or some crafting materials that people often grind for.

Turbine's system works because the games have little to no PvP combat so you don't have to worry about somebody buying a megaweapon and kicking your ass.

Most of these games need to take the Second life approach. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could tailor your own line of swords, armor and other stuff and sell them in game to people for game $, which could be cashed out for real $. there are people on SL who do not work because that is all they do. create content and sell it in game... the publisher could take a cut of every transaction. every one wins!

Free to Play, among other things, is why I have given up on LOTRO. And I am a lifetime founding member. TT
