arstechnica.com — At an impassioned DICE Summit presentation, Twisted Metal designer David Jaffe argued strongly that games should stop trying to push developer-created stories on the player and instead focus on the things that make the medium truly special.

mortventFeb 10, 2012
Umm, guess he hasn't realized many games that do great do tell a story!
TES, GTA, Fallout, etc all have a story, allow the player to ignore it or discover it and run with it.
Twisted Metal isn't about a story, it's a super demolition derby game for mindless fun and destruction.
A game like Fallout is a rpg and thus had a story (a lot of minor ones too) and is a far sight different than the games he designs. But no less important or less special than a game about slapping insane weapons on cars and blowing things up.
ect5150Feb 10, 2012
I think we can agree sometimes it helps out... others, not so much.
RPGs should probably have something at a minimal level.
Mortal Kombat? Not so much.
neondistractionFeb 11, 2012
Mortal Kombat had a story?
jeffdabeatFeb 12, 2012
Actually, I thought the story of Mortal Kombat 9...as ridiculous as it was...was one of the best features of the game. Mindless fighting is fine, but for me it gets old if it isn't for some purpose. Soul Calibur is one of my favorite fighters that lost most of it's rich narrative when the 4th game came out. Sure it was fun, but since there was no story, there wan't a real reason to discover the path of every character. Same thing goes for Street Fighter 4.
rockyoumonkeysFeb 10, 2012
Exactly. There's plenty of room for games with stories and without. People play games for different reasons. Sometimes I like something kind of mindless, other times I'm in the mood for something that's little more than an interactive movie.
Maybe guys like Jaffe should worry less about what other developers are doing and more about the fact that all he does is push out sequels and remakes.
randomcLamsheLLFeb 10, 2012
dont forget metal gear solid, or mario for that matter
jivatmanxFeb 10, 2012
I think there's room for games that are completely abstract like world of goo.
I think there's also room games that essentially try to create the best and most realistic movie-like experience that they can, like Uncharted.
And everything in between
And all of the things that don't even fit in this limited axis.
dandoniaFeb 10, 2012
Do you realise that Jaffe made the God of War series. The man knows a thing or two about telling a good story in video games.
mortventFeb 10, 2012
Yet he is advocating dropping stories... because gaming isn't about telling a story
dandoniaFeb 10, 2012
I'm with him. The mass majority don't complete games because often times the developer has spent more time focusing on the story rather than the game mechanics. The most played games are sports titles and shooting titles which are pretty much sports titles in that you have to beat the other team to win.
People play those games year round but on't often complete 10 hour story games.
But hey, people are different.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mortventFeb 10, 2012
Funny, last I checked TES, Deus Ex, etc.. were not sports games
the problem isn't stories in the games, it's not spending time on one part of the mix.
A game should have a good story and good gameplay, neglecting one over the other isn't a good idea in many game genres. Others all you need is the gameplay, story is an afterthought if unecessary
dandoniaFeb 10, 2012
What makes you think TES is one of the most played games?
mortventFeb 10, 2012
Morrowind is still sold 10 years later, Oblivion still sells, and Skyrim is doing well.
I would say that is a good indication of story driven games that are still played.
dandoniaFeb 10, 2012
No.
You're comparing apples to oranges mate. Millions upon millions of people play Call of Duty from the day they buy it to the day the next one comes out and that's the same with FIFA.
I'm not saying people don't buy TES, they are very popular but here's an article from Kotaku about Skyrim. It shows that only 15% of people have competed it's main quest, over 50% of people drop off after the first few hours and there's an achievement that only a 0.4% of people have achieved.
Best selling is not the same as most played.
So I ask you, what's the point of having hundreds of hours of story if players aren't getting through 6 hours without being bored of the game?

mortventFeb 10, 2012
What is the point?
different market share, doesn't make one wrong.
Skyrim doesn't interest me (it's more an rpg on rails), but I still load up morrowind and oblivion. As well as the various fallouts.
Each type of gamer has the games they like, some want games with a story others just want mindless shooting.
dandoniaFeb 10, 2012
Sure, but the point is that 85% of the people who bought Skyrim don't see the story through and over 50% don't get past the first few hours. That's because the games developer spend more time making an interactive movie than an actual game that is fun to play but when was the last time you saw a 20 hour movie?
So what happens is, most see a small part of a huge story.
If you are a creator and you want to tell stories, why not write a book or make a movie? Or at least make a game that tells a story rather than a story that has game play elements to it.
But yeah, those 15% loved it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mortventFeb 10, 2012
Well you have to stop and consider, I don't play call of duty or the like.
They are too shallow to interest me.
Many different gamers out there, but a lot of people are waiting for skyrims modding community to ramp up.
And consoles, pcs, etc.. all have different markets.
It's a stupid idea to cut out stories, they drive games of certain types.
A shooter, sports, or arcade game needs no story.
A sim, rpg, or tactical game usually does best with one.
Action games do well witha good story worked into good gameplay.
If he can't develop good game play and story... he needs to say so.
dandoniaFeb 10, 2012
He developed God of War, one of the most critically acclaimed story games of all time. It's not that he can't develop a story game, it's that he can see that the majority of people don't play story games. They buy them, use them for a few hours and that's it. They never see the end of the story (or the middle in most cases) and they abandon the disc.
Meanwhile, games that don't focus on stories but instead concentrate on game play - well those are played to death by people. FIFA fans have been with the series for 2 decades and before FIFA came World Cup Italia 90 and European Club Football and the Sensible World of Soccer. Football is a timeless game because the game mechanics have always been right.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mortventFeb 10, 2012
He was part of the team that developed god of war.
It wasn't a solo project. That is the key, many development teams have people working on the story and others working on the gameplay.

crimalucaFeb 10, 2012
This guy is stupid. Games and computer media can be whatever the developer wants it to be. Trying to restrict the medium into something that fits your own personal definition of a "game" is retarded. Open your mind.
drunkrobotFeb 11, 2012
Agreed, but I don't think he's stupid. He has a specific agenda and clearly, story telling is no longer part of it. His opinion will probably end up bitting him in the ass over the next decade.
kaegroFeb 10, 2012
Some games should have vivid story lines, some games should have none and some games should be in the middle. It would suck if all games were the same.
If people didn't make vivid story lines in games, we would not have Chrono Trigger.
PanjeeFeb 10, 2012
YES
reaper527Feb 10, 2012
this guy couldn't be further off base. what makes games like mass effect and bioshock so great is that they do have a unique story and aren't just a rehash of last years call of duty
circeherbivoraFeb 11, 2012
I'm a woman in the 30-45 demographic and I will only play a game WITH some sort of storyline. I know other women just like me! Some of us may be recent newcomers to the gaming world but our money is just as valuable as anyone elses'- perhaps moreso because we are less likely to try to buy our game illegally or find a way to get it for free.
So yeah- the shooter games and sports games have their fans, but keep Fallout, and Mass Effect and their ilk coming for those of us who love them.
10000lakesFeb 11, 2012
YES THEY SHOULD! That's what keeps me playing the game through to the very end. I loved Dragon Age 1 and 2 because of the story. Bioware knows how to tell great stories with their games which totally draws me in and keeps me buying their games. If the story isn't good, then I will get bored & stop playing. Without a good story, video games are just boring and repetitive!
jivatmanxFeb 10, 2012

I guess atmosphere is more important. A story can help to create a dense atmosphere (see Deus Ex, Thief), but it is not the only mean.
artofellislambFeb 10, 2012
Thief was amazing and the whole story was told in game or thru Garrets narrative and photo stills.
as for cinematics lets not forget about the best story, half life, no cut scenes and but tons of events and well explained by in game dialogue.
melthornalFeb 10, 2012
Unless you are making an arcade game whose only purpose is to distract you for a few minutes, a game without a story is a game that isn't worth playing. And I find it hilarious that they say Skyrim doesn't have a story.
The best game ever made is still Planescape. Why? Best story in video game history.
drunkrobotFeb 11, 2012
Many game designers hate story telling and or narratives because it creates conflicts between gameplay and "the magic circle": http://gamasutra.com/view/news/40157/Protecting_the_magic_circle.php
Designers who want games to evolve into a more meaningful form of entertainment and art generally embrace the concept and work to maintain the circle by carefully balancing gameplay. But designers who want games to be about skill, difficulty, negative reinforcement, high scores, leader-boards, etc... reject the magic circle concept because their gameplay preferences will always break the circle. Personally, I prefer designers who embrace it, but they are a dying breed these days.
thesmrt12004Feb 11, 2012
I don't buy games that don't have a good story
specimen7Feb 11, 2012
Depends on the game.
Half-Life had a story that was better than most movies.
Silent-hill 2 had a story that was better than all movies.
circeherbivoraFeb 11, 2012
I loved Silent Hill. What some of these No-Story Gamers don't get is that a game with a story is FUN to play with someone else beside you. My husband and I have spent hours on such games and the characters and story make it all worthwhile. Did you ever play "Deadly Premonition"?
That game KILLED me! Hilarious...so wrong- yet soooo good!
specimen7Feb 11, 2012
Exactly. When silent hill 1 first came out, I played the game for a few hours with my brother next to me. In the basement at night, in the dark.
We freaked out together and had a great time. After a sesh, we had to dare one another to walk through the dark basement and up a small flight of stairs to turn the light on.
After encountering pyramid head in SH 2, we sat there for an hour hovering over the TV light because we were scared. And we just kept getting more scared. Hearing s**t that wasn't there and seeing shadows that didn't exist. Finally we both ran the f**k out of there without turning off the TV and made our dad turn it off.
Some of the best gaming memories come from either watching someone ply or playing while someone watches.
zbeastFeb 10, 2012
if it's a story driven game... then it should tell a story.. Twisted metal is just about smashing cars together. it's one of the reasons why it's of not interest to me....
bcole83Feb 10, 2012
I think he was more focused on the "time" factor of creating a game...
He thinks too much effort is wasted on developing a solid story for a casual gamer who really doesnt give a damn about it (the story).
"Entertain me" is the only thing on an average gamer's brain; and game developers realize this making it easier on them to focus on the bells and whistles of a game rather than the story...also saving them money.
Game developers are ALWAYS on a schedule and when they miss deadlines, CEO's are not pleased. So why spend hours in the thinking room making a bad ass story (digging holes for themselves because now they have to add certain elements in the game according to the story = more developing time) when noone actually cares?
I believe the decision on making a DEEP story to a videogame should be well understood before developing a video game...see how gamers respond to a sample story and make tweaks from there.
drunkrobotFeb 11, 2012
The reality is the average casual and core player is far more interested in storytelling and narrative than hardcore players. Depending on which segment of the audience you believe are hardcore players. But what's holding core gaming back from becoming a more complex, meaningful and mainstream form of storytelling are the CEO's of the largest publishers and developers. They are only concerned about profits and market share, which makes them highly risk adverse. They won't risk developing the types of games that could take game storytelling to the next level. They want all games in all genres to appeal to hardcore shooter - action fans first, everyone else second. Which is why the gameplay in storytelling games is still exclusively designed for and targeted at hardcore players. Despite the fact that they only represent 10 percent or less of the overall audience and half of them never even play single player campaigns.
TGRHvWGAFFeb 10, 2012
Yah but... what if one of the things that makes the medium truly special is the fact that it's the only entertainment medium in which you *are* part of the story? Absent table-top gaming and Choose Your Own Adventure books, that's the only other way you can be part of the story... and that loses its appeal if the story is lame or nonexistent.

RambutaanFeb 11, 2012
While sometimes meaningful story isn't as important (e.g. in action games, puzzle games, multiplayer games, etc.) I actually think it's crucial that the story is good for other genres especially RPGs and adventure games. I actually think of games being an artform in its own right and you've got plenty of good examples out there: Bioware RPGs like Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Dragon Age all have great stories. Imagine if they didn't - would they be as great a game? Then there's all the old Sierra and Lucasarts adventure games (Police Quest, King's Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Monkey Island, Full Throttle, etc.) - adventure games live and die on a good story line. Sure you need to complement these with fun puzzles and gameplay or else you risk making the game into an interactive movie of the early 90s (where the gamer was almost a spectator), but having a good story is what sets a game above the rest. You could argue that music and sound are useless too but to me they're also crucial in making a game experience enjoyable.
Even the most popular games out there which don't have a story (e.g. Maxis games The Sims, Spore or in the past SimCity) allow you to BUILD the story. The game's story is only limited by your own creativity.
So besides a lot of casual games like Bejeweled I think story helps making the game stand out above the rest... wait wasn't Puzzle Quest quite popular awhile back and all Infinite Interactive basically did was incorporate a story to Bejeweled gameplay? Well there you go... another example where story can set your game above the rest...

OR some people have imaginations and fill in their own instead of having to had it told to them.
trdrstvFeb 10, 2012
I agree with him. Though I don't fault people who want to make those cinematic games I'm good with:
"The Princess was kidnapped by Bowser..... AGAIN. Go get her." as my story. There are some games that I do enjoy the journey, but most of the games I play and enjoy and get the most out of are ones that are more "Arcade in Nature" like racing games, sports games, music games, puzzle games....
You don't NEED a compelling narrative to keep you engaged in a game and often times it only kills re-playability. I mean how often do you finish a book, then go back and re-read it immediately once you know the outcome vs How many times did you win/lose at a game of basketball and say How about 1 more game?
I enjoy something with a solid narrative, but those games I go back to and replay maybe every few years, where as something that is more ACTION oriented and self contained I could play several times a night or several times a week.

It comes down to this. We have all these things that matter for games. We have music , sound, gameplay, ui, graphics, dialogue, and story. The least important element is story. This is especially true for me but it's also true for most games that do well. Few are playing GTA just because it has a good story (if you really think it does). I think a goal is important and dialogue are important but in the truest sense of what story is, it's hard to see it as important. The best a game can do is a "choose your own adventure" story. It's only other choice is to force the player to follow the determined path and annoy that player with a very linear game where his actual choices mean little. I agee with Jaffe on this. We've become focused on this story ideal where it just doesn't matter much in the grand scheme. The best games never had great stories. The future of gaming isn't in this direction. You can't have the cake and eat it too. You'll either push the gamer towards one direction too obviously and too much or you'll make the story so discombobulated that noone but the most adamant story fanboy would understand it.
xeromusFeb 10, 2012
I got into video games for the stories. In the days of NES and sega, that's all they really had to work with due to graphic constraints. Improved visuals can make games more aesthetically appealing, but a great game, IMO, is just like a great book: there needs to be conflict, plot and character development, etc to make it compelling. Remember playing through FFIV or Resident Evil for the first time? Story lines make games good. Graphics just make games better, like a nice paint job on a car. I'd rather drive a faded Cadillac than a freshly painted probe.
freeforalFeb 10, 2012
Um... Not sure Jaffe is really the best person to be telling people how to make a better video game.
Every so often I'll go all retro and break out an old Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior game and start playing it.
Yeah, twisted metal was a fun game... for about a week. When was the last time anyone ever got the urge to play GOW?
macharborguyFeb 10, 2012
games are a form of media that can get by with a great story, a passible story, or none at all. What really matters is the "game" aspect. One example is Heavy Rain. It was a good work of Interactive Fiction, but as for the "game" portion it left much to be desired for me. With a series like God of War, the game parts balance out the sometimes out-there storytelling.
And then there is Star Wars The Old Republic, which I have stopped playing. The main sticking point is the Bioware interactive storytelling, but the long, drawn out WoW-style MMO in between the conversations made me cancel my subscription and load up the conversations on YouTube.
And, of course, games that don't need a story at all: PacMan DX, Space Invaders Extreme, and other classic, arcade-style games that are more about getting a higher score than anything else.

I'm just about to finish Fable 3, an incredible game with an absolutely terrible story line. Brother's is king and is a dick. Brother travels with possible molester to gather support by killing people also against the king and digging up lost items. Brother becomes king and people probably hate him too, but darkness is about to destroy the kingdom. Brother buys all the houses in the game to acquire 6.5 million gold and build a suitable army. End.
The story is laughably terrible. But along the way you can get married (possibly gay), choose your path, continuously fight whoever you'd like, or fast-track all over the world and complete the numerous amounts of side quests. It's one of the most fun games I've ever played and I've been addicted to it since starting it Sunday. But the story is goddamn terrible.
meccaydnaFeb 11, 2012
I think that games can screw up the story just as easily as a movie could. Peter Molyneux is like the Uwe Boll of video games (IMO). Of course Boll is a director instead of a writer, but still....
SpycrabingFeb 11, 2012
Ah man, Fable 3...I was really confused towards the end, when you make all of the decisions, and your treasury keeper guy asks if you want to make drinking illegal, because all of the poor people are drunk all of the time. For some reason, THAT OPTION WAS THE EVIL OPTION. Apparently, making the poor people sober up and not puke all over the town is on par with turning an orphanage into a brothel.

Yah if they stopped putting plot, and stories, it would just become plain shooter... Hell even wolfenstein 3d was not that boring. It would definitely hurt there customer base that was RPG player, and lot of strategist that like detailed descriptions and sometimes historical accounts to reenact. Now if it's a few people complaining, there is no reason that they can under the usually "Show subtitles" put check boxes to hide stories, hide cinemas, and provide click through speech as fast you can click. It can't be too difficult to add that option Most large moddable games (Fallout series for instance), for the most part, (Other than the timeouts for cinemas on startup (Though you can speed them up to just wait 1 for the 4 with a blank screen), you can remove a lot of the stuff, and speed up the speech, heck you can actually change the speech of the npc, want a cussing NCR General.... You got it.... want to mod the legionnaire assassins so they chase you everywhere, and yell and then???... In any case games like fallout or even the GTA series I think would be half to even less than half as fun as they are without the stories. Without goals or stories, I can tell you any game would not keep my attention that long....

No, they shouldn't.
1. The purpose of a GAME is GAMEPLAY.
2. If you spend budget and time on things that aren't gameplay, the gameplay suffers.
3. If a game needs a story in order to justify its existence, then it's a worthless game and anyone who spend $60 on a few hours of barely B-movie story/character development with terrible gameplay has no sense of the value of a dollar.
All the good games that are worth playing for hundreds of hours have good gameplay and don't need stories to justify playing them.
Why do you bother playing Borderlands 8 times (2 run-throughs per character)? It sure as hell isn't because of the storyline. There's no need to experience it 8 times. No, instead you keep playing because it has good GAMEPLAY. Collecting weapons, trying out new skill builds, farming Crawmerax for Pearls, trying speed kills against Crawmerax etc. THAT is what makes the game fun to play. The story is irrelevant.
