Because you need to relate things to academic theory to be successful, right?

Yeah, but has this "whole set of scientific language" actually been put to any use? That's this guy's point; it hasn't!
What this guy is doing is that he's putting these game dynamics phenomena to use in the real world. Game dynamics can be used for increasing work productivity or even learning. It can, in the end, help the economy and even boost they human civilization to the next level.
Game dynamics are powerful motivators, and we need to harness their power.

I think you're missing the point.

he failed to describe his idea, so it will not sell
belorionAug 23, 2010
Was this a talk about a "game layer", or about how he dropped out of Princeton? He mentions it like 3 or 4 times in his 12 minute talk.
nullvectorAug 23, 2010
The books "Daemon" and "FreedomTM" by Daniel Suarez are great examples of "game layer".
I see the game layer as having to be world-wide, like the internet. It can't just be another facebook, or myspace, or aol. A virtual layer could be pretty cool if it were free, accessible to everyone, and run almost in an open-source fashion.

I'm Ron Burgundy?
chiefbandit2200Aug 24, 2010
He's just trying to reassure himself that dropping out wasn't a bad decision...
Also, is that a foreign accent, or does he just talk differently?
themole222Aug 23, 2010
All he is talking about is basically virtual masturbation
evaldasmixAug 23, 2010
LOL
bryang412Aug 23, 2010
I lost count of how many times he said the words "very powerful thing...".

"He mentions DIGG in his talk!"
What? Whoah, dude! Double Rainbow!!! All the way across the sky!!!
komgolAug 23, 2010
Let's start a petition to change "Valedictorian" to called "White Knight Paladin Level 20"
dogatemypronAug 23, 2010
Those weren't the MW2 prestige medals.
brotherfrancizAug 23, 2010
Wow, no wonder he dropped out of Princeton... plagiarism anyone? This dude 'stole' Jesse Schell's talk:
http://g4tv.com/videos/44277/dice-2010-design-outside-the-box-presentation/
Add to that, this Seth Priebatsch guy has an annoying voice and wears douchey sunglasses on his forehead INDOORS...
a1579Aug 23, 2010
This one is much more interesting, thanks
pedlezelnipAug 24, 2010
He didn't really steal Schell's talk, as Schell's talk was interesting, intuitive, and terrifying all at the same time.
Priebatsch's was a bit commercial for SCAVNGR.
donotclickjimAug 23, 2010
Here are some more interesting uses of the ideas presented in the presentation: http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/marketingfm/0b1375189a9e7c515d9e86d00180fcb6

The paladin on the right wasn't level 20.
sageerrantAug 24, 2010
And I'm not sure how he expected it to simply walk into Mordor.
wankdankerAug 23, 2010
Sounds like Daemon by Daniel Suarez (http://www.thedaemon.com)

I think that the progress bar was a good point that most would not have thought of in that way. Well done.
