That was a great name for the original because it was a revolution in gaming. I don't think this new one is going to have as big an impact as they're hoping for!
Whatever it's called, let's just hope it doesn't sound like another bodily fluid...
Honestly, why not Simply "Wii HD" ? You sell the fact that all the controllers and Wii games can be used on it, but on the new games you can put a "Requires Wii HD System" much in the way "Requires Kinect Sensor" is on Boxes now.
That just makes it sound like the same system with HD. It's the same reason they didn't call the Wii the Gamecube DX or something, despite the fact it runs all Gamecube games and supports the controllers.
I work with computer graphics. 3DS used to be the key search acronym for "3D Studio Max". Nintendo had to come in and introduce their pocket console and flood searches with garbage!
I also work with Autodesk Maya 3D software package. Its scripting language is called MEL (Maya Embedded Language). I still hold a grudge at Mel Gibson for directing Apocalypto.
with the whole "old is new again" thing going on with bringing back the original names of products, why not just call it the "Nintendo Entertainment System", especially since games, movies, tv shows, youtube, and the internet all are part of "entertainment" now-a-days.
I had no idea they were planning to do this. I initially though Wii was a ridiculous name, but it stands for something now and this console is clearly along the same lines, since you can use all of the original Wii accessories and games (Which, incidentally is the reason I don't think the confusion over game compatibility seen by the DS/3DS will translate).
(I also thought the Wii U was a new controller when it was first announced!)

Something different and new would be nice, i've heard way too many 'Wii' jokes over the years, going to get worse with the 'Wii U'.

So, in the end they realized it was a dumb name.

Perhaps Nintendo will be looking to avoid another round of confusion with Wii U.
