I think it's a little too soon to be calling the 3DS dead. Let's at least wait for Vita to launch and see how well it does before we start making that assumption again.

Nice use of Paint on the title graphic...
pepe2004Jul 30, 2011
So, sony made a great call with the vita being a cellphone and a console. Shocking.
kaiventorJul 30, 2011
I think it's also fair to mention that as smart phones get more and more powerful, devices like the 3DS are likely to sell less and less since they're a specialized platform.
While the merits of the 3D part of the 3DS are cool, I don't think it's enough to sway people away from IOS and Droid on an ongoing basis.
The article hit the nail on the head: Your platform is only as good as the apps for it. No amount of fancy hardware is going to save you if you only have a couple decent games.
mizuhochanJul 30, 2011
No. The good games will be out soon and you'll all stop whining. It's doing what the DS did, that didn't have any good games for a while and now it's very successful.

Everyone said/says the same for the Wii. Still, to this day there is no killer app for the Wii. I have owned 2, and sold each after realizing I was going months at a time without even considering turning it on.
mizuhochanJul 30, 2011
The Wii has s**tty controls and old tech though, which is probably why nobody wants to make anything for it, except shovelware.
ghostsharkJul 31, 2011
Uh no killer games for wii?!?!?!? HAHAHAHa. The Galaxy games, Metroid Prime 3, Boom Blox, Donkey Kong Returns, Trauma Center, Smash Bros Brawl, Punch Out, Zack & Wiki, Zelda Twilight Princes, etc etc etc. Wii has MANY high rated exclusive games through it's lifetime. They just lack the better third party games.

Please, Nintendo has been dead for years. I just wish they would ensure the safety of the Zelda franchise.
defendbelgradeJul 30, 2011
Dead for years? Really? I would like to know how you've reached that conclusion.
paintballer747Jul 31, 2011
My reply to @gojoe.
gojoeJul 30, 2011
What? The last 2 consoles that Nintendo have put out have been some of the best selling of ALL time (the DS and Wii).
Nintendo is far from dead.
paintballer747Jul 31, 2011
No Nintendo is dead. At E3 all they had was Skyward Sword (which is great, I mean, I love Zelda) and the Wii U. Yes the Wii and DS had record sales but it matters what happened after that; Wii sales plummeted when people realized that Nintendo wasn't going to do anything about the Wii supporting better games and the Wii's demographic was reduced to families which hasn't generated sufficient profit. The DS did well until it became outdated; with the 3DS falling through the cracks and only a tablet and a single game for the future, Nintendo is dead.

There's a difference between sales plummeting and tapering off. All consoles do that. They can't grow exponentially forever. And Nintendo has more than Zelda games and Skyward Sword (although that is what I care most about). Pokemon Black/White both shattered records just recently. Not to mention Wii U looks to improve on expanding the demographic back to more "core gamers" (Arkham City looks incredible). And last I checked Mario was the biggest franchise in all gaming, he's not gonna just disappear. Just because you stopped playing with your Wii doesn't mean the company went under.
paintballer747Aug 4, 2011
I'm not saying it "went" under. I am saying it is "going" under by ignoring their American market and almost as you said, falling out of that "core gamer" demographic is crucial. There is not one person that I have spoken to that has recently bought a Nintendo system/game that has not been completely dissatisfied. I still think my NES is amazing and that's, in my opinion, the format that Nintendo should give a whirl; the remake of Super Mario Bros. had record sales as well.
avleJul 30, 2011
certainly dead. just look at it, it is screaming old, too simple, to narrow focus, expensive games,...
the mass market seems to like elegant touch screen devices with larger screens and a good web experience, along with new inexpensive casual games. Nintendo may survive in a niche, but they will not enjoy the kind of profit Apple and the others will pull in. Sony will go the same way if they don't get their act together. Nintendo should have taken a hint when they saw the formidable success of the iPod touch.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

They are two completely different markets. Just because the iPhone is getting a lot of customers does not mean that every other gaming platform is losing the same number of customers. Like you can not tell me that if every person who currently has an iPhone suddenly ceased to have one (or the ability to get a new one) they would run out and buy a 3DS.
