Hollywood can learn a lot from a lot of things.
ScottyTomaierAug 26, 2010
Or if they learn anything, maybe good plot's
mabsarkAug 28, 2010
Everyone should boycott Digg on Monday.
Closed AccountAug 28, 2010
that could mean v4 will stick as new users will not be part of this revolt. i suspect there will be some new diggers who will find this site in the coming days and be quite happy with the familiar format, especially if they are big twitterers.
if we continue the revolt the new users will be warned what a terrible thing kevin has done to the existing users and be be more likely to shy away.
i say continue the revolt until v3 is reverted. anything else is completely unacceptable.

That we want a super mario sequel.
skeloothAug 25, 2010
we do, but one that doesn't suck.
jander86Aug 25, 2010
At first I was going to say "Just skip to 3" but I'd really like to see a Mario movie that is as bizarre as 2 – drinking potions & throwing turnips.
protodonAug 26, 2010
we're merging!
docholiday22Aug 25, 2010
They will never learn. One thing we learn't historically is that they will screw up whatever they have unless they have a real passion for it.
jackredmondAug 25, 2010
I'm waiting for a film called Booster Justice in Modern Warfare 2, inspired by the fine work of Sandy Ravage of course.
skeloothAug 25, 2010
a lot
dervish108Aug 25, 2010
George Lucas could learn a lot from Knights of the Old Republic.

The second KOTOR wasn't that good though.

It could have been beautiful, but they rushed it.
doomesticAug 28, 2010
People behind obsidian are the same people behind fallout 1 / 2. They are easily as good as bioware when it comes to RPGs. The story of KOTOR 2 was great, but it got rushed in the end and that was not Obsidian's fault, but the publisher... guess who that is...
apocalyptic0n3Aug 25, 2010
Or the trailers for Old Republic. Or Force Unleashed.
zaynexzandersAug 26, 2010
I remember reading about that game in a game informer before it came out and I as a 12 year old (or something around there) got a metaphorical horse boner. Such a good game
andru87Aug 25, 2010
Actually it's bioshock 2.
What is masquerading as bioshock 2 is in fact an expansion pack.
methusalahAug 25, 2010
There's some blatant advertising for you.
Closed AccountAug 25, 2010
Did I read the article? No, the subject has been beaten to death.
Did I watch the Bioshock Infinite trailer? Yes, and it was wonderful.
paechanAug 25, 2010
Bioshock 2 sucked big time. Please don't learn anything from that. They should have gone straight to the new flying city after Bioshock.
ace00000Aug 26, 2010
The developer Irrational Games actually did go straight to Bioshock Infinite after the first. 2K Games decided to make sequel to cash in on the franchise and they hired different developer to put it out.
theobviouschildAug 25, 2010
I'd love to see a "System Shock 3" to further reinforce this point.
Bring on Shodan!
ermac88Aug 25, 2010
An absolutely silly editorial.
If anything games has taken a page from hollywood with nothing but sequels and remakes
scotchbrothAug 26, 2010
I'd agree with you, but the current generation has had a ton of new stuff come out that, while many now have sequels, they started as original ideas.
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Assassins Creed
Batman Arkham Asylum
Red Dead Redemption
Borderlands
Little Big Planet
ajajadudeAug 26, 2010
I have played some sequels that kick as much ass, if not more, than the original. Uncharted 2 comes to mind.
niccoswAug 25, 2010
All movie previews should include:
“One Minute…Go."
"Good"
"Amazing!"
"Spectacular!!!"
“A New Box Office Smash!!!!”
punkcatAug 25, 2010
"Press Start to Begin"
dungeAug 25, 2010
Learn from video games? A lot. Learn from Bioshock? Next to nothing.
ontainAug 25, 2010
Bioshock wasn't story-based?
have you played it?
cme884Aug 25, 2010
Red Dead Redemption borrowed tropes from Hollywood. Can't say I've played Mafia 2, but I'd be willing to bet it's the same.
jj9nerAug 25, 2010
The average consumer who plays video games is smarter than the average consumer who watches movies. You have to interact and (usually) complete complex tasks and puzzles to beat a video game. To watch a movie you simply have to be a zombie and sit there.
Studios/game publishers have things produced and developed (mostly) to earn that largest amount of money for them. That means creating a product that attracts the widest range of consumers (aka: lowest common denominator).
This is the reason PC gamers complain of their games are being "consolfied" and why everything Hollywood puts out is either a flash-in-the-pan Michael Bay movie clone or a chick flick. If you want a thinking-man's movie, America probably isn't the best place to find such a product.
bracomadarAug 25, 2010
I couldn't agree more. A typical Hollywood blockbuster bores the s**t out of me. Maybe once every year, or so they'll have something really good and thoughtful, but most of the time it's crap. If I want to watch a movie, I'll usually search for an old movie, or a foreign film on Netflix, or TCM. I'm afraid video games are starting to get more like movies in that they're getting dumbed down, or are just recycled old ideas. There's people in Hollywood that think explosions and lots of CGI alone can make a great movie and there's some in the video game world that think good graphics alone can make a great game.
ontainAug 25, 2010
"The average consumer who plays video games is smarter than the average consumer who watches movies. "
source please. there are plenty of idiots that play games as well. I don't see anything to suggest one group is smarter
cme884Aug 25, 2010
"If you want a thinking-man's movie, America probably isn't the best place to find such a product."
Inception begs to differ.
mechabortionAug 26, 2010
lol one point for America, even though the director is british.
gregus1032Aug 28, 2010
You can buy a strategy guide and pretty much solve all of the "complex" puzzles and tasks by knowing how to read. Or you can enter cheat codes (if available) Not to mention, not every one who buys video games beats them.
bawbzillaAug 25, 2010
"What Can Hollywood Learn From Video Games?"
That you should release movies in trilogies, and recycle characters, keeping it fresh by adding one or two twists, and not giving very much resolution at all until the third. Also, funny colors are good! Sepia tone that s**t and make it all bright and shiny while you're at it.
oh s**t wait
techoboAug 25, 2010
Once Hollywood can figure out how to make Starcraft into a movie, they'll be guaranteed money from every Korean on the planet.
jjjx03Aug 25, 2010
You have to be kidding me with this article on the front page.
Video games are not movies, and neither movies nor video games should try to imitate the other medium. They both have their strengths, video games are interactive and movies are "cinematic".
Video games trying to emulate movies is making video games simpler, dumber, less interactive, and less interesting to play. Movies emulating video games with useless visual trickery and short attention span camera work (incessant 1 second cuts) is making movies tedious, vapid, and boring.
Get over it already.
b3owulfAug 27, 2010
Overall I agree with you, but how have video games influenced the "incessant 1 second cuts"? Its one thing I hate in movies (I'm looking at you, Bourne trilogy) but I never see this sort of thing in games. I think most gamers have a longer attention span, when it comes to digital media at least, than most people.
cyriakAug 25, 2010
I'm disappointed in you all. No one has mentioned Halo yet? In my personal opinion the storyline is more emotional and intricate than any movie or game ever produced. But then again I sometimes wish I could sit and absorb the story in the form of a movie, as a game is not always perfect and the frustration of being killed repeatedly at some points just completely ruins the mood.
mechabortionAug 26, 2010
it has become cool to hate halo. "how many people like that? what a piece of s**t"
apocadallAug 25, 2010
Except Bioshock 2 sucked and video games suffer the same thing movies do by sucking more (usually) in the sequals.
dinglebuttAug 26, 2010
all movies need space marines

Hollywood should take 1 thing from games, the plot's. Everything in Hollywood is over done and repeated.
angusmAug 26, 2010
... that adolescent males will sit on their butts for hours, watching people get machine-gunned and s**t blowing up.
Uh, wait, it seems Hollywood has already learned that lesson. Got anything else for us?
chewie67Aug 26, 2010
Here's the big picture:
Video Game sequels are almost always better than the original.
Movie sequels are almost always worse than the original.
