I remember playing a lot of Alex Kidd in Shinobi world, but it was the only one I ever played.
Never the less it was a great game.
warbeastAug 9, 2010
What about Strider?
boinkAug 9, 2010
That reminded me how great Alex Kidd in Miracle World is. Found a copy for $10 on eBay buy it now--thank god for the Sega Power Adapter for the Genesis.
ckononAug 9, 2010
god that game was hard!
vincentlooiAug 9, 2010
Fantasy and amazing, old school. i really love it. a lot of memory there ToT

Sonic and Sonic 2 should be the top of this list.
andrewdbAug 9, 2010
Sega Master System. Sonic and Sonic 2 were not on the Sega Master System.
zorbomanAug 9, 2010
Believe it or not, they were...Sega made ports of those games for the master system for some reason:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2_(8-bit)
cardyologyAug 9, 2010
I had both sonic 1 & 2 for the master system when i was 9. They were poor alternatives to the Mega-drive versions unfotunately.
djrobxAug 10, 2010
"Some reason": The Game Gear was, for all practical purposes, a portable SMS. You could even insert a cartridge adapter into the Game Gear and run the SMS games on it directly. So, when they made a port of Sonic and Sonic 2 to the Game Gear, it was very easy for them to distribute the same game in SMS format with some small tweaks to have it utilize the full resolution of the SMS.
Compare the SMS Sonic to GG Sonic. The only notable difference is that you can see more of the playfield on the SMS version (and if I recall, stereo sound is on the GG only).
candre23Aug 9, 2010
The sonic games were crappy ports made very late in the master system's life, trying to eek out a few bucks from the kids who hadn't yet jumped to the genesis. They weren't very good, and the only reason they're on this list is because a lot of the people who voted probably never had a master system and just recognized the sonic name.
It's a crime that Zillion wasn't on this list.
andrewdbAug 10, 2010
It's VGChartz, their users are as s**tty as their website. Seriously.
Zillion is one of the most under-rated titles of all time.
andrewdbAug 9, 2010
Buried as VGChartz.
s**tty website. s**tty list.

fadetooneAug 9, 2010
I used to frequent their website (mainly for particular forum threads) prior to their latest design update. So I can verify: s**tty web designers, s**tty forum moderators, and a mostly s**tty userbase.
fuzzynyankoAug 9, 2010
Same here. I personally don't care about a pretty website, just the ability to find things, which is where the new vgchartz fails
benroyAug 9, 2010
No Ghost House or Choplifter? Really? What about Space Harrier?
f**k this list.
dojocasinoAug 9, 2010
To be fair, Space Harrier really sucked on the Master System.
camilos007Aug 9, 2010
What a s**tty list indeed. Have these guys ever played any SMS games? Where is Wonder Boy in Monster Land? Where is Shinobi? And 3 Sonic games? Pathetic. Truly pathetic.
elranzerAug 9, 2010
It needs more Golden Axe Warrior. Pretty much Zelda on the Master System.
bige89Aug 9, 2010
Did you even read the article? It was voted on by users. Don't blame the website for the s**tty choices that it's members pick.
camilos007Aug 10, 2010
I said the list and the people that wrote the list are s**tty. I never explicitly said the website was s**tty.
Having said that, VGChartz IS a s**tty website that makes up sales numbers out of their ass.
cusomanAug 9, 2010
How can they mention Alex Kidd without mentioning Janken, ie. Rock-paper-scissors?
Also, I agree that Space Harrier needs to be on that list.
gimmeslack12Aug 9, 2010
11 comments so far. Wow I'm surprised there's that many people who actually played/had the SMS. I never knew it existed until Genesis came out.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
drbunsAug 9, 2010
Shinobi, Space Harrier, and Wonder Boy in Monster Land are conspicuously absent.
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
Shinobi is not a great game in my opinion.
drbunsAug 9, 2010
It's a whole lot better than Altered Beast, which had an average review score of 4/10 from EGM when it came out.
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
Yes, I would agree about it being better than Altered Beast!
djrobxAug 9, 2010
For its era, SMS Shinobi was a pretty decent adaptation of the arcade game. I don't know if I would call it a great game, but it's certainly one of the SMS classics.
I remember we got SMS Double Dragon as a free promo for something. I thought it was terrible. Very boring, poor game mechanics.
The SMS era was pretty much over when sonic games came out. I think they only reason they exist at all is because they were easy to convert from the game gear platform which lived on after the SMS had been replaced by the Genesis.
My favorite SMS game was Choplifter. I still play it from time to time (it's almost identical to the MAME/arcade version). I liked the Zillion games too.
drbunsAug 9, 2010
Zillion:The Tri-Formation was just too hard for me. I loved the first game though, and played it about 6 weeks ago.
plainoldfoolAug 9, 2010
Dugg for Ys. I loved that game.
djdethAug 9, 2010
Crappy list. Wonderboy 3 was great, but I would also put Wonderboy 2, Zillion, Choplifter, and Astro Warrior
paraswarmAug 9, 2010
I'm glad they included Phantasy Star.
I first played it on my uncle's Sega Master System and I was enthralled with it. The music, the graphics, the difficulty - holy s**t, what a game. I still play it from time to time.
boinkAug 9, 2010
I was just playing this not but a few weeks ago. Spent so much time just running around and leveling up/collecting money.
diggnanAug 9, 2010
This game was epically great for its time! I used to drive 100+ miles down to Lexington (and back the same night) so me and my friend could play it together. I'd kill for a version I could play now on my PC or through something like PSN. The game was so simple, yet there was tons to explore and the '3d' dungeons were complete awesomesauce. ( I think this was before Wolfenstein, maybe someone can correct me.)
kevroAug 9, 2010

Hey man, THANKS! :-D
raydeenAug 12, 2010
I've played it on an emulator before. Never had a Master System but loved the hell out of PSII and III on the Genesis.
tgc1Aug 9, 2010
Thunder Blade should be in there somewhere. Same with Out Run. No Wonderboy? Come on.
I'm kind of glad to see Alex Kidd in Miracle World mentioned though. I played the s**t out of that game. It was hard as hell, but I liked it. f**king weird game though. I'd say that Double Dragon was FAR better on the Master System than Nintendo (I have the one for the NES) but distinctly recall Double Dragon being better on the Master System as a kid (I used to play it every day before school).
Also, they should have mentioned the secret Maze game that you got to play if you didn't put a cartridge in. I think you had to push 1+2 and to the right or up or some s**t. I can't remember because I don't have a Master System (looking for one currently though). Good times.
pyroglassAug 9, 2010
Usually with lists everyone has to say 'What? no ..... ? '
And it gets dry and dull reading these comments. but seriously.
What? No Shinobi?
darnyAug 9, 2010
Umm..hello? Fantasy Zone? Afterburner? Aztec Adventure? Wonderboy (part one) was great enough to have HudsonSoft's Hundson's Adventure Island completely bite off it. Cmon guys, no Action Fighter?
ckononAug 9, 2010
the music from the original Wonder Boy still haunts me..
chumpbenderAug 9, 2010
Action Fighter was the first video game I ever played and will always have a special place in my memory.

10.altered beast
9.Golvellius: The Valley of Doom
8. Sonic Chaos
7. Double Dragon
6. WonderBoy III: The Dragon's Trap
5. Ys
4. Sonic the Hedgehog
3. Sonic 2
2. Phantasy Star
1. Alex Kidd in Miracle world
On this list, I only had Wonderboy III and Altered Beast; Wonderboy may be the best game from my youth. SMS also had the best shooter game of any platform at the time, Wanted.
fishbeef33Aug 9, 2010
Ah, the Master System. Those were the days. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap was, I feel, as good as Zelda, if not better. The mazes were incredibly clever and the ability to re-enter sections of the world as different creatures with vastly different gameplay techniques was fantastic.
Fun Fact: the music for the Master System version of Sonic 1 was composed by Yuzo Koshiro, the same guy who did the amazing Streets of Rage soundtracks.
zoshchenkoAug 9, 2010
I'm sorry, but this is kind of like making a list of the top ten 14.4k modems.
statichargeAug 9, 2010
No matter what order you put the Master System games in though, when you were in the store as a kid, and they had the Atari 2600 and/or 7800, SMS, and NES on display, nobody was ever standing in line to play the first two. Same was true with the Turbo Grafx, Genesis, and SNES. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
serif69Aug 9, 2010
Mine was always a Sega household. We had a Master System, Genesis, and 32X. We only switched when Dreamcast came out, and went to PlayStation. The Master System may not have had the selection of games of the NES, but it was far superior, IMO. Something like F-16 Fighting Falcon could never (and would never) have been done on the NES.
I had both Gobots and Transformers, thank you.
petoriaAug 9, 2010
Great Baseball. Playing as Chicago I think. If you could get Black to hit a fair ball it was an inside the park home run every time.
aunttalithaAug 9, 2010
I wasted much of my life playing various Phantasy Star games. And I miss them.
perilAug 9, 2010
Black Belt and Quartet!
unitedatheismAug 9, 2010
Ok, what the hell? A Sega Master System on Digg??? I thought people here only knew NES and SNES, all vintage-gaming articles here simply skip Sega in everything...
Anyway, the last 2 ones were obvious and fair calls. Still they've lacked at least 3 out of the following 4: Fantasy Zone 2, Black Belt, California Games and Kenseiden.
pedlezelnipAug 9, 2010
Phantasy Star != #1 -> this list is a joke
Sorry, but that was far and away the greatest game for that console. I had Alex Kidd as well, and while it was a great game, nothing came close to PS1.
Choplifter, Space Harrier, and Afterburner all should have been on the list as well. Having 3 sonic games on the list is a bit questionable as well. I don't even remember having Sonic being available on the SMS.
thatbuffaloAug 9, 2010
This list is about the SMS, not the PS1.
cannabiscorpseAug 9, 2010
i have After Burner, Double Dragon, and Wonderboy 1, 2 and 3. I regularly still play my Sega Master system all the time on my LCD tv.....its f**kin hilarious.

OUTRUN!!, Wonder Boy in Monsterland !!! (or was that the genises.....) Mazecraze free hidden game!!!!
babywookieAug 10, 2010
R-Type and Power Strike (Aleste) were great shmups for the system.
biggityb78Aug 10, 2010
Can't believe Phantasy Star wasn't number 1! Man that list takes me back a lot!
