Ha! I still have my genesis and first-generation Sonic. I think I'll dig it out and play it tonight.
barnettizerJun 28, 2010
i'm currently typing this message on my master system
thezonerJun 28, 2010
it was HD to me!
spazattack5000Jun 28, 2010
It's still real to me dammit.
philbertJun 28, 2010
Some of the graphics like in ESWAT and Target Earth really blew me away at the time.
johoshuaJun 29, 2010
@Philbert: Target Earth was hard as s**t!
xraymasterJun 28, 2010
Marketeers will say anything to praise their products!
bamazombiepunchJun 28, 2010
Dugg for Genesis with slider power switch instead of button.
paraswarmJun 28, 2010
Don't forget the headphone volume controls!
sgxyayJun 28, 2010
I used to record game music onto tape using that headphone jack. Shining Force II music rocked!
zachary80Jun 28, 2010
I don't think I've ever even seen one with only a button
Closed AccountJun 28, 2010
it's the one most people in the United States had. it's the second generation.
isevenJun 28, 2010
HD on sega ...now that was truly HD!
dreamvsps2Jun 28, 2010
800 x 600 ftw
khastJun 28, 2010
Ahem.. you mean 320x224 ftw?
lbuchaJun 28, 2010
Memories... at the corner of my attic
fall0ut17Jun 28, 2010
say it....SEGA!
pktgumbyJun 28, 2010
I guess that's why they called it "Genesis".
phyx726Jun 28, 2010
X-men and Aladdin were good
inferno10Jun 28, 2010
X-men pissed me off. I never figured out how to "reset the computer" on the danger room level until many years later.
kevroJun 28, 2010
how would you ever finish that level using an emulator?
ielleJun 28, 2010
Anyone remember Streets of Rage?
sabinJun 29, 2010
Yuzo Koshiro at his finest.
panthusdireJun 28, 2010
Shadow Run on the Genesis was amazing.
lahs0nJun 28, 2010
Digg me down, but I enjoyed Shadowrun way more on SNES.
tgc1Jun 28, 2010
X-Men 2 had a kick ass soundtrack.
joemanjiJun 28, 2010
I'll never forget the first time I saw Sonic - the colors - the graphics - and the speed of the game were all so much better than what I'd grown up with. It was truly amazing and jaw-dropping.
junk11Jun 29, 2010
You were 6 years old at the time it was release in North America! Where the hell did you grow up?
joemanjiJun 29, 2010
Fargo!
bonertankJun 28, 2010
I will forever remember 19, 65, 9, 17 and 4, 1 , 2 ,6
angelsfreeekJun 28, 2010
1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4 - Debug Mode. Cycle through all the sprites in the game and spawn them right there!
theparaibaJun 29, 2010
1992/11/24 = Sonic 2 launch date.
bonertankJun 28, 2010
I forgot about debug mode...I know what I'm doing tonight
neotechniJun 28, 2010
what game?
bonertankJun 28, 2010
Sonic 2
jellylube13Jun 28, 2010
Sonic 2 level select and Super Sonic code. Ingrained in my head...
rizzosbackJun 28, 2010
Same thing as the XBOX 360 being "Full HD" then rendering the Halo games at 600p and upconverting.
babywookieJun 28, 2010
There a lot of games that do that, on both the 360 and the PS3. I don't see how it's the "same thing" though.
jalsnipeJun 28, 2010
I can't believe that the Sega Genesis has been around for 20 years. Sonic and Mortal Kombat still own any other game out there now.
rizzosbackJun 28, 2010
Mortal Kombat really isn't a good game, it just looks cool. Street Fighter II is eternally superior.
jalsnipeJun 28, 2010
I was always more of an MK guy, I'm just weird like that. I own the Genesis cart, have it on MAME, and even have a java copy on my phone. I play it on the train to work :P
zipkoJun 28, 2010
Bring back Sega Channel!
crosshareJun 28, 2010
I remember Sega Channel being too expensive to afford growing up, but my best friend's uncle worked for the cable company and got us a demo unit to play. Glad we never paid for it, everything game had a 30 minute or so time limit. About the only thing worth playing was sports games as you couldn't save or progress.
zipkoJun 28, 2010
You're right about not being able to save, but there weren't time limits on the games. (except for some demo's of upcoming titles). That limit was probably something to do with it being a demo unit. The way games got around the save issue though was with save passwords. When you wanted to quit you'd write down the code for the level you were on and enter it the next time you played to start from that point.
It was a little expensive ($15 a month) but well worth it for 50 titles with new ones each month.
crosshareJun 28, 2010
15 Bucks? That seems cheap, if I remember right the company here wanted 40 bucks.
zarokimaJun 28, 2010
I just a young little whippersnapper, so all I remember is HOLY s**t GAMES COME THROUGH THE WIRE AND I DON'T HAVE TO BUY THEM!!!!
galacticrerunJun 28, 2010
I've got an old cereal box that displays 3D. I bet Sony feel a bit stupid about that now!
jwandersonJun 28, 2010
Streets of Rage II
znavy264Jun 28, 2010
Best.
Game.
Soundtrack.
Ever.
detroitplayaJun 28, 2010
Mega Man 2 would like to have a word with you.
mckirkusJun 28, 2010
From the article:
"But more then a decade ago"
Beneath the article:
"We are looking for Writers"
At least they've admitted that they have a problem.
deepthought78Jun 28, 2010
It's not even an article. The entire "article" is quoted verbatim in the description above.
sirmasterboyJun 28, 2010
HD didn't start with the 360/PS3. The original Xbox has several games that run and output at either 720p or 1080i.
donnyspechtJun 28, 2010
PlayStation 2 as well, though the only one that comes to mind is Gran Turismo 4.
spudgeboyJun 28, 2010
ICO, Black, God of War, etc. Just hold down the triangle button on many games and you got the HD screen.
melektawusJun 28, 2010
Valkyrie Profile 2 and Tourist Trophy also had 1080i. A lot of PS2 games have 480p.
Closed AccountJun 29, 2010
GT4 didn't actually render at 1080i - it was just upconverted.
voodoochild461Jun 28, 2010
dugg cuz I had the 32bit, vector man ftw
kevroJun 28, 2010
Vectorman was 16-bit. It was too bland and difficult to be a worthy competitor to Donkey Kong Country. Disappointing really as I only had a Genesis back in the day.
rikwakefieldJun 28, 2010
Get that bad boy a 32X and Mega-CD stat!
philbertJun 28, 2010
*Sega CD :p
kevroJun 28, 2010
Sega has always been kind to me. I've picked up cheap Sega CD , 32X and Saturn and amassed a large collection after they did not meet expectation. I still greatly enjoyed them.
7m7ufJun 28, 2010
@deatoned, i had a Master System game once, but no master system, just a Genesis -- and that cartridge wouldn't fit into the slot as well -- so i decided to take a file to the cartridge to "Make" it fit. I was a kid and was easily distracted, so never finished filing away the edges, plus the plastic was really hard and it was taking forever.
oea420Jul 7, 2010
hah! I actually scored a 32x adapter for chrismas from mom when I was a kid..
Oh man, I remember getting that 32x and DOOM.. I would stay up all night scared out of my gorge trying to beat DOOM on the hardest difficulty with a sega controller
jacekwJun 28, 2010
High definition is a relative term. Don't forget that the standard in those days were 8 bit graphics and there were even a few black and white televisions around.
wolfmannJun 28, 2010
heh, yeah I had a 9" B&W that I used to play on (only because the color TV was being used by someone else)
sabinJun 29, 2010
I was spoiled, I had a 27" Trinitron XBR for my NES/SNES/Genesis gaming.
giveerJun 28, 2010
*than
Ughh.
hiroJun 28, 2010
This is why I'm so bored of people saying "HDTV". It's just a TV for feck's sake and apart from being a mouthful and sounding stupid, what some call HDTV now will be laughed at in 10yrs time. Besides, I bet there's hardly a TV available that can't at least output at 720pComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
happyimbecileJun 28, 2010
They'll just be called TVs soon enough. Nobody called a TV a "Color TV" after a while, even though that's what everyone called them when color was first introduced.
mantiskungfuJun 28, 2010
Seggggggg.....(reset) SEGA!!!!
harbinger666Jun 28, 2010
The Genesis, the one thing Sega got perfect.
philbertJun 28, 2010
I don't know... Dreamcast was pretty snazzy.
crunchydeluxeJun 29, 2010
I don't know... Dreamcast was pretty perfect.
It was the marketing that sucked.
philbertJun 29, 2010
@po43292 Yeah I still remember the great DC app DSSBS aka Disco Stu's Self Boot Solution.
Closed AccountJun 28, 2010
I loved the genesis, but the sound sucked :(
kevroJun 28, 2010
It was close. Could have use more on screen colours then 64 simultaneous colours of a 512 colour pallet.
mlvassalloJun 28, 2010
SEGA DOES WHAT NINTENDON'T!
picaloJun 28, 2010
HD is relative.
fixed topic.
there is NO higher HD than your eyes...again as it is relative and within perception.
zombiesocietyJun 28, 2010
Sega was always too ahead of their time for their own good.
I really wish I could get mine hooked up, but for some reason I have a Genesis 1 with a power supply, a Genesis 2 with an AV cable and they're not interchangeable. FFFUUUUUUUUU-
reconfigurJun 28, 2010
Derrrrrr....
youngcebJun 28, 2010
Its a Trap!!!
jdryyzJun 28, 2010

aschwartzJun 28, 2010
NHLPA 94 was the greatest hockey game. in HD...
kevin108Jun 28, 2010
It was funny seeing this today. We bought a house in May and just got around to unpacking our consoles a few days ago. I noticed the wording on my girlfriend's Sega and chuckled to myself. My NES and SNES didn't have anything fancy on them.
headinawheelJun 28, 2010
God Damnit. I miss Soviet and Nuclear Strike.
swramanJun 28, 2010
wow thats almost as impressive as those HD Vision sunglasses that are available on TV.
malik112099Jun 28, 2010
The reset button...brings back memories.
murrabbitJun 28, 2010
The PS3 and Xbox360 aren't even really true HD, they tend to output to 720p which is a failed intermediate standard.
Meanwhile PCs have been outputting to full 1080p and beyond as long as monitors with such a pixel resolution have existed.
ryanwbJun 29, 2010
I don't think anyone knew WTF high definition was at that moment in time. In like 30 years our kids will look back and be all "They called 25 mbps -Broadband-, LMRAO (laughing my robotic ass off)!!"
cowboy1015Jun 29, 2010
Yes it was. Before 1080p, there was only 720p, 480p, 480i...
tnoyJun 29, 2010
I'm holding out for Ludicrous Definition.
volacideJun 29, 2010
Couldn't you argue this about nearly anything? Isn't any term only relative to what you're talking about?
