One I know is that it jumps very well on the tortoises.
birdvswormJul 6, 2010
they nailed the main games in the "mario through the years" section. i'm glad they didn't try to cram every title in there - that would have taken up a lot of space.
barr08Jul 7, 2010
Agreed, though I would have liked to see Mario Land 2 : 6 Golden Coins and New Super Mario Bros DS
cesclaveriaJul 7, 2010
And maybe a special mention of the "Lost Levels"
awilder27Jul 7, 2010
perhaps super mario rpg?
miche1987Jul 7, 2010
I'd have put Lost Levels in there seeing as that's the "true" SMB2, and I would have also done Yoshi's Island. Yeah, more of a Yoshi game, but it's still technically "Super Mario World 2".

Ok, never knew that Mozart's music was featured in Mario Bros. I never knew that Mario's name came from Miyamoto's landlord's name. Interesting.
megabyteJul 7, 2010
It didn't come from Miyamoto's landlord. It came from the landlord of Nintendo of America. Crappy inaccurate infographic. http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19930617&slug=1706910

And I'm not sure where they're getting this "manuke" = donkey stuff from. I googled it (http://www.google.com/search?q=%2Bmanuke+donkey&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) and I can't find anything that says "manuke" is in an english dictionary and is associated with "donkey".
shaflugiJul 7, 2010
From what I've heard, they wanted to call him "Ass Kong" because he's stubborn like an ass. Of course, they're japanese, so they didn't know that "ass" would be considered offensive in English, hence the name "Donkey Kong". Not saying it's fact, but that's what I've been told.. it's really hard to get real data on stuff like this for some odd reason.
mikeosxJul 7, 2010
I read that Miyamoto looked up an English translations for "Stubborn Ape". For "Stubborn", he picked Donkey, for "Ape" he chose Kong. Stubborn Ape = Donkey Kong
elbergelJul 7, 2010
Mozart - I can kinda hear it.

From the start (SMB) to the present day (SMG2). Mario is still starring in some of the best recieved, most critically acclaimed and most influential games of all time.
Closed AccountJul 7, 2010
Yeah, Mario has never really had a terrible game, but it did have some less-quality ones (such as Mario is Missing), but I'm glad that it never experienced the utter failure that Zelda had on the CD-i.
finaldrumgodJul 7, 2010
Actually, there was a CD-i game called Hotel Mario. Originally they wanted to create a sequel to Super Mario World called "Super Mario's Wacky Worlds" but they canned it and Hotel Mario was the product.
shaflugiJul 7, 2010
I don't think we should clump in the spin-offs with the actual Mario games. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, for instance, is not a Mario game.
mrleo1984Jul 7, 2010
Those spin-off games like Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine are not made by Nintendo right? Nintendo just (foolishly) sold the rights for another company to use the character.
carrot1991Jul 7, 2010
The main line of games have been extremely high quality for both the Mario & Zelda franchises, and for that reason they're my favourite IP's of all time.
wernstJul 6, 2010
<geek>Whoops. Joust was made by Williams, not Atari.</geek>
lust4meJul 7, 2010
Wow, nice catch. Atari only ported Joust to the 2600 (1983), according to Wikipedia.

Wow. That one about Miyamoto's landlord was totally false. First of all, Miyamoto never lived in the United States. Secondly, the landlord was the owner of the warehouse Nintendo of America operated in. Thirdly, the only thing Mr. Miyamoto has said about the name "Mario" was "Nintendo of America came up with it."
I learned all this from another story posted on Digg. A legitimate research paper. With sources and everything.

Can anyone prove to me that Mozart's eine kleine nachtmusik is used in Mario intro?
snobrder218Jul 6, 2010
I was just thinking the same thing. I know the entire first movement (played it as a Sax ensemble) and I can't think of any part that Mario uses. I'm quite confused. Someone prove me wrong.
fretkushJul 6, 2010
I find no reference to it. Eine Kleine is one the most well known pieces in the world. One could say that the beginning of Eine Kleine using the same pitches at the beginning of the mario theme. However, every high school band geek knows that those pitches out line the C Major chord, not exactly specifically references Mozart. Myth Busted.
doshindudeJul 7, 2010
DDR Mario Mix. Look it up. They link the two pretty well in that game.

Yea, I came to the comments to post something similar. I wouldn't exactly say awesome, but definitely worth watching.
meribianJul 7, 2010
It was hilarious and it referenced many things from it. What the f**k did people expect? Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo to run and jump over inexplicable holes for an hour and a half?
Closed AccountJul 7, 2010
That always gets me. People complain that the movie didn't stay very true to the video game. Well no s**t? If you want a 100% accurate Super Mario Bros. movie, then record yourself playing the game for 90 minutes.
That movie came out when I was a kid, and at the time, I couldn't get enough Mario. I loved the games, I loved the cartoon shows, I loved the Mario sodas with different flavors for each character, and I loved the movie. At the time, I felt like the movie was a bizarre live-action interpretation of the Mario universe. And I f**king loved it.
How can you ruin the story to a game that doesn't really have a story to begin with? The basic premise is "damsel in distress". It's a story that can be told a billion different ways. I think the movie did a decent job of that.
dbetaJul 7, 2010
I have an uncle that played a few parts in the movie. He was in several crowds and he was also the waiter that served them in the restaurant scene(if memory serves me).
As a kid I thought the movie was awesome because of that alone. He is also in the Crow, he is one of the cops that barge into the Crow's apartment right before he goes flying through the window(once again, if memory serves me, I haven't seen the movie since it was release on tape).
1807Jul 7, 2010

Seriously, though. Can John Leguizamo not grow a moustache? Or is he allergic to fake moustache adhesive? WTF?
juzz101Jul 6, 2010
It'sa Marioooo!
Closed AccountJul 6, 2010
Huh... I always thought they chose the name Wario because he was supposed to be the opposite of Mario's heroic sense, being a bad person, so they flipped the M upside down to a W.
Much of the rest I knew sadly (for my sake).
deweyhewsonJul 7, 2010
The section on the origin of the Donkey Kong name is not correct. Or, at best, it is only "possibly" correct.

Hasn't GTA3:Vice City overtaken the sales record by SMB3???
hardeep1singhJul 7, 2010
GTA 3 and GTA:Vice City are different games.
dbetaJul 7, 2010
GTA3: Vice City is the correct name. It was GTA3, GTA3: Vice City, and GTA3: San Andreas. They kept the number 3 because they used the same engine.
1807Jul 7, 2010
They didn't call it Grand Theft Auto 3 Vice City. The also didn't call it Gran Theft Auto 3: San Andreas. Just so you know, many games use the same engine and aren't even close to related. By that Logic, every game which uses the Unreal Engine 3 (I.E. Unreal Tournament 3 and both Gears of War Games) or Havok Engine (I.E. Halo 3, Soul Calibur IV, Super Smash Bros. Brawl) should have a similar name. Don't open your mouth if you don't know what you're talking about.
reaper527Jul 7, 2010
"GTA3: Vice City is the correct name. It was GTA3, GTA3: Vice City, and GTA3: San Andreas. They kept the number 3 because they used the same engine."
no, they are GTA3, GTA:Vice City, GTA: San Andreas. just look at the title screen and retail packaging if you don't believe me.
dbetaJul 7, 2010

Why does everything seem to be an 'infographic' nowadays. Just make a list.
gojirraJul 7, 2010
This was not really an Infographic. Infographics are supposed to convey information visually. This was just a bunch of crappy Mario art with text boxes of information.
crackinthebox10Jul 7, 2010
I'm sorry, but that Mario Bros. movie was f**kin awesome.
nori0300Jul 7, 2010
Awesome? No. Amazing? Yes!
starscream45Jul 7, 2010
I loved it. I thought I was the only one. It never felt like a true Mario Bros. movie but I still loved it. I like when they are in the elevator with the "goombas" and make them dance to the elevator music in order to distract them so that they could exit the elevator undetected. If they changed the character's names and changed the name of the movie to something non-mario, I think it might've been more successful, just my opinion though.

Super Mario 3 is one of the best games I have ever played or will ever play. I still have an original Nintendo and play it all the time. I'm not just being nostalgic either.

The bushes are clouds!
Super Mario 2 was a re purposed Doki Doki panic. The actual sequal released in Japan was considered too hard for American audiences.

petethepandaJul 7, 2010
Look up a video of Duncan Keith taking a slap shot to the face, busting out 7 teeth and coming back out for the rest of the game. It's kind of hard to take soccer seriously when half the god damn game consists of dives and grown men flailing around like sissies at the first sign of contact.

Interesting, although I'm not sure what it has to do with a Super Mario Brothers infographic.

awesome infographic except for one thing: why choose to include Game Informer's 2009 greatest games of all time list?
There are so many "greatest games of all time" lists that they could have chosen one where Super Mario Bros. (NES) was #1 on the list (IGN comes to mind).. but really, why even include opinion-related content on a great infographic filled with facts? it was better off without it.
