engadget.com— Who needs George Hotz anyway? A USB modchip for the PS3 has emerged from the mists this morning, purporting to allow the dumping of games
Aug 19, 2010View in Crawl 4
If this is real (and it does sound too good to be true), then it's like the PSP's pandora battery where somehow Sony left in a function to put the device in service mode.
I know you guys (ozmodchips) aren't stupid enough to throw away your good reputation for this, so I believe you. My skepticism mainly lies on the price. $160 for a USB dongle. Honestly, the materials doesn't look like it costs more then $30 at most. I guess it's probelty a "let's profit before the clones come".
to he really honest it probably costs less then $10 or $5 usd to make. But yeah, we dont make it, so we dont get to set the wholesale and the retail price. Anyone selling them under retail price doesn't get to be a reseller pretty much. Our price is in AUD, not USD (usd is pretty s**t atm so it doesn't make to much of a difference). Price also includes 10% tax that anyone not in Australian doesn't pay.
I am guessing the price is high becuase
1. there is a 4 year backlog of ps3 that are not modified
2. its a plug and play mod...you dont even have to open your console up
3. it runs off USB. I am sure people would buy a $50 usd modchip, pay someone $50 to install it, buy a blu ray burner, and then backup their games onto PC, and then buy blank media....ends up being way more expensive (even though the option isn't available)
The developers seem to think it will be after xmas until the unit is not cloned...but copied.
chances are this exploit will be patched out in the next big update, right? Have the devs said anything about circumventing updates and still being able to use PSN?
(And before anybody says "how will we charge our controllers", I'm sure Sony will have a solution to that available, for the low, low price of $59.95.)
JackSchittt, and how exactly would they do that? What about peripherals like the Playstation Eye, or Rock Band instruments, or Buzz controllers, and Singstar microphones? Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Also, the USB removal would wreck much of the PSP's connectivity features, especially in regards to the PS online store and the PSP games made available on it.
The USB removal rumor was a troll thread made up to piss people off, with no legit link to any kind of official statement regarding the matter.
I can see an inductive charging system built in to a console sometime soon. Like that powermat thing. Just set the controllers on top when not playing to be always charged.
I dunno man, Sony is known for making stupid s**t like that all the time (rootkits, no backwards compat with PS2, PS1, remove media readers, remove Linux). I wouldn't put it past them to remove USB ports and tell every one to go f**k themselves with their new $60 paperweights.
The same place you buy your games. Oh... wait, you'd rather invest in a blu-ray burner, writable blu-ray discs, and this device than support the game developers? Yeah, that makes sense.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
I know it's crazy to think that hey, this guy may have already bought all the games he wants and is wondering what the hell to do with this 250Gb hard drive on the PS3. Wouldn't it be great if he could easily access all the games that he has already purchased through a menu instead of constantly swap disks out.
That would be a crazy idea, good thing I don't already do it with my DVD collection.
"The same place you buy your games. Oh... wait, you'd rather invest in a blu-ray burner, writable blu-ray discs, and this device than support the game developers?"
This looks like it's one of the old launch models that never got the upgrade that removes the ability to use Linux.
Even if this is true, it's probably not going to be of all that much use to most players, since this most likely wouldn't even work on an old model with updated firmware, or any slim model at all. If it's just a debug exploit, Sony will have that patched up by next week. And any modded consoles connected to PSN are surely going to have the banhammer dropped on them quickly.
Newer games probably won't work, since they'd require updated firmware. And to use this for older games? Why bother. You can find most of them for $20 or less used. Going through all the effort of modding the console and risking a banning simply isn't worth the effort.
From the comments: It is a debug console, look at 44 seconds and you can see the option to "Install Package Files" which is only present on dev and debug consoles
The dongle turns a retail console to a retail-debug (kind of same as test/debug, but still using retail keys). The PKG file linked from their site, is hardcoded not to run on the real test/debug consoles, only on retail with dongle.
Short installation guide:
1. Plug in the dongle
2. Turn on the console
3. You will see extra menu called 'Install Pkg Files', use it to install the Backup Menu PKG (can be on extra fat32 usb mem stick)
4. Use the menu to rip your games (games that use files over 4gb cannot be ripped to an external fat32 hdd, use internal hdd instead)
5. Use the menu to mount the ripped game
6. Run the game as if the BD disc was in drive
The 4GB limitation isn't that bad as when the game is ripped it isn't one big iso file, but rather all the little files within the iso. Just so long as there isn't a 4GB file within the iso then it'll all be fine, and seeing as they've tested 150 games so far, I think it'll be alright.
not exactly fake, but a very misleading title and story. ThirstyKoala above your comment quoted a comment from Engadget that the unit used is a developer's version of the console which might have root access capabilities. Good luck getting your hands on a dev PS3.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Red Faction Guerilla is a 5.86GB download over PSN.
Infamous is a 6.88GB download.
Burnout Paradise Complete Edition is a whopping 3GB.
the Blu-Ray versions are no different.
Just because it's on a Blu-Ray doesn't mean they're filling it up!
Been checking rslog sites, and most of them are about 4 - 5 gigs is they are multi-plat. The only big ones are Uncharted 1/2 which are 23GB and MGS4 which is close to 50. Apparently GT5 is going to be about that size as well.

If this truly does run off of the USB, Sony will have it patched up in a week. I don't care what they're claiming in order to try to sell their product.
Sure, you have the option not to update, but good luck ever signing into PSN again. Or playing newer games that require the updated firmware.
On the other hand, you can spend $300 now, buy this USB device, and have access to a s**t ton of good games that were released in the last 3 years. Sounds like a nice trade off to me, multi-player is overrated.
No, as long as they don't start adding some retarded DRM to new game disks, you'll still be able to play new games. Otherwise, you'd be s**t out of luck if you bought a new game to play, but didn't have internet access...
mywhitenoise: So you're going to spend $300 on a new PS3, and another $170 for the usb unit just to "back up" a bunch of old games that cost less than $20 used?
As for the games you listed, check Ebay's completed listings. For every game you listed except for Heavy Rain, 5 or more copies of that game sold recently for less than $25, with some copies selling for as low as $17. Which means that they can be found elsewhere for $20 with minimal effort.
A $470 investment will get you an essentially crippled system (since you can't sign in, go online, or play anything that requires updated firmware) that can "back up" (read: pirate) old games that can be bought cheap. You'd have to "back up" 16 games that you would have ended up buying just to see any savings at all, and even then you only save $10. (16 games @ $30 per game, which is on the expensive side).
If you're going to spend nearly $500 and put all that work into it to save that little money, I think you're the one who's the dumbass.
lol, you really think I'd only buy this mod to back up games I already own? I'd pirate the s**t out of games I didn't own, or ones that were coming out. And once again, who gives a f**king about being able to sign-in and play boring multiplayer?
And don't give me any s**t about how pirating games doesn't support the developer, because youre alternative of buying used from ebay doesn't either.
You're gonna spend $500 on equipment to pirate a bunch of old games -- $600 or more once you factor in the price of a decent hard drive large enough to pirate enough games to make it worth the money you're blowing.
Then you're gonna spend countless hours downloading games -- if you can find them since there's none out there yet. Or you're going to spend even more money renting them from Gamefly. Or you're just gonna leech off your friends.
You'd have to pirate 16 decent games or more before you even break even on your investment. Now if you've got the kind of time to pirate and play 16 games, then I truly feel sorry for you. Get a life. Go outside. Get laid once in a while. (And no, bragging about how often you get laid when your only real action lately consists of a tube sock doesn't count). If you're not playing them, you're just wasting your time and money. If you end up playing (not just pirating -- playing) less than 16 games, then you ended up *wasting* money.
You go right ahead and do that. I'll continue to buy my games legitimately and play on a non-crippled system. And I'll probably spend less money.
Jack, shut the f**k up already. You obviously don't know how to pirate, and how easy it is to do so. Keep spending more and doing things the hard way. Keep thinking you're saving more money and time than a pirate.
No, seriously. Explain to me how you're going to pirate enough games to make it worth spending the hundreds of dollars you're gonna have to spend.
Explain where you're going to get the games from. Countless hours waiting for 10+gig files to download, while spending even more money for a burner and discs to burn them on? Days at a time waiting for a gamefly game to come in? Or are you just going to be the ultimate loser and leech off your friends?
Explain where you're going to get enough time to actually *play* all the games you need to pirate to make it worth your time, while still maintaing a life that isn't the equivalent of a sexless loser living in mommy's basement and jacking it into a tube sock.
Explain how you think that this is going to work on any new games when you damn well know that Sony will have this blocked in weeks, and all new games are going to require the new firmware.
Or are you just going to pirate a s**tload of games for the sake of pirating them, even if you never play them? If so, that doesn't make you a pirate. That makes you an idiot who's wasting his time.
Piracy is only worth it if it costs you less time, money, and effort to pirate than you would spend getting the product legitimately. So far all you've proven is that you have no idea how much money you'll be saving -- if you'd be saving money at all -- and that you're just pirating for the sake of pirating. That may work for the "piracy rulz fuk sony hurr hurr hurr" crowd that is all over Digg, but that doesn't work for anybody with more than 3 active brain cells who can do some basic math and realize it's just not worth the time and effort.
Im not going to waste my time and read all of that s**t. I'll just be concise.
I have an internet connection that downloads 25Mbps, downloading a 25GB blu-ray rip (which I often do) only takes a few hours, I can let that run over night or while I'm at work.
I can then transfer those files to existing HDs (I have about 5TBs external)
I could then transfer those to one of my already existing PS3s, which has a 360 GB HDD...or I could just attach one of my externals and run it off that.
It's not like I have to sit at the computer and watch it download. I can walk and talk at the same time.
I could easily download enough games to make this worth it. Download torrent, go to bed, go to work, hang out with some friends, come home, torrent finished... :D
And if that's too much work, you can easily rent games. And if you really don't want to pay money, go to gamestop, buy a game, dump it, take the game back, and repeat.
@chiefbandit2200
"Otherwise, you'd be s**t out of luck if you bought a new game to play, but didn't have internet access... "
Any games that require a specific firmware version include an update to that firmware update on the disc itself, so that even if you don't have an internet connection the disc can install the firmware update for you. Unless the USB modchip can somehow disable the firmware version check (which is unlikely and also dangerous - the game would crash if it tried to use new firmware features that didn't exist) then you still won't be able to play new games.
"No, as long as they don't start adding some retarded DRM to new game disks, you'll still be able to play new games. Otherwise, you'd be s**t out of luck if you bought a new game to play, but didn't have internet access... "
Sony includes new firmware on the game disc. There's probably a lot of people who don't have an internet connection, but they're not s**t out of luck when they buy a new game to play.
Unless this mod can overcome the DRM on newer games that will require a minimum firmware greater than the current firmware, pirates will be the only people s**t out of luck ;)
Agreed, however many people including me cant sign into PSN anyway, as I refuse to loose my OtherOS ability on the console.
If this is real, it would be ideal. Especially where it says it disables forced updates.
Well if you haven't updated since 3.21, then the ability to disable forced updates is useless to you.
If you're happy being locked into playing older games that don't require updated firmware and never signing into PSN again, then more power to you. But you represent a very, very small subset of PS3 users. This will still be largely useless to 99.5% of the rest of us.
And don't buy their claims that it will work on newer games. Newer games will require newer firmware. And if this is real, firmware that locks this out will be released by month's end.
Anyone else look at the headline and think "GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!" in Professor Farnsworths voice?
This is great news if it allows me to backup the full disk image to hard drive. I would easily pick up a 2TB drive and dump my games to it so I dont have to swap discs.
Unsubstantiated statistics are seldom replacement for col hard farcs.
And it being used for piracy, which it WILL inevitably be used, does not take away from the legitimate uses as your post seems to [inadvertently?] imply.
From what I understand, it's not just an ordinary flash usb disk, but there's also some added hardware to allow for this. Still, it's best to wait because it will be copied, and the price will go down. I'm still pissed I ordered an R4 for like 60 dollars, when only a few months later you could get them for $5.
A. Probably. The have have the USB dongle firmware upgradable, but you can never predict the future. This is made to work with 3.41. If you happen to download an install an update which is higher then this then it is your doing. We will not accept stock back as "faulty" if you have upgraded your firmware
So basically it's a really s**tty deal if you like playing games online as Sony will more than likely release an update. You don't have to update, but to play games online you will.
Translation: "A: This is almost guaranteed to be blocked in Sony's next firmware update. Then if you want to continue using our product, you will never be able to sign on to PSN or play online ever again."
Its not a debug unit. I know becuase I made the freaking video. The dongle obviously tricks the units into thinking its a dev unit. I don't know what well to do to show that its real.
Hey dude - I dont know if it's true, because I just found out about this. but if it is, kudos. :) If not, oh well, we're not any worse off than we were 10 minutes ago, right? lol
I think you have to understand the skepticism that will exist until people start getting them in their hands. I've been following various ps3 dev boards (for years) and I must say that from a macro level, it looked harder to crack than my ex-wife's vagina. I assumed that if systems like the ps2 / xbox1 required soldering initially, surely to hell the ps3 would require cracking the case open at the least. I tip my hat to you!
I just started working at a game store and have been told I can borrow games from the store for a short period of time.
if this thing works like it says it does, i will be borrowing games, burning them to a large hard drive and taking them back slowly growing my collection.
so.. if anything, get this device, rent games, copy them, keep game forever. its not free, but it beats buying them.. they are just way too damn expensive :P
Did anyone else cringe when he took out the disc and placed it data-side down on top of the console? And then cringe again when you notice there's another one just laying around?
Actually he placed it data side up. If you're going to put a disc down it's much safer the way he did it. The data is actually written just below the label, in most cases if you scratch the label your disc is f**ked cause you'll have hit the data layer, if you scratch the bottom of a disc though it's no big deal, it'll usually still work and you can just get it refinished if need be, so long as the scratch doesn't actually hit the data layer (which is much closer to the top than the bottom of the disc).
So in short, no it didn't make me cringe, he did it properly.
I wouldn't say a lot, maybe a little but scratching the bottom of the disc doesn't break it. You need a real gash in the bottom of a disc to actually hit the data layer. Where as any scratch in the label will typically hit the data layer as it's immediately under the label.
hmmm..! I guess I can know rest assure my games disc collection will not get scratched!? but I don't want to run into hopes either I really want to believe this but something is telling me that maybe just a hoax I hope not.
160 dollars?! Im not a computer whiz but since it is on a USB stick, wouldnt it be possible to see it on pirate bay in the coming weeks? The usb cant be that hard to extract the files fromComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
The secret about Skyline is that the vast majority of it was filmed in an apartment building, Paranormal Activity style, as a group of friends try to survive a mass alien abduction in Los Angeles. But because the film is directed by Colin and Greg Strause, who own the special effects house Hydraulx, there's also some decent CGI in there too, and that's been trumpeted heavily in the marketing campaign, because why not? We got a good look at the alien ships in the film's teaser trailer, and now they're on display again in the first poster, which debuted today at Shock Til Ya Drop.
Click on the smaller version below for a look at the whole thing. It's a pretty striking image, especially since we learned from the trailer that all those things floating beneath the spaceships aren't just debris, but people being abducted. Skyline hits theaters November 12, and is trying very hard to be this year's Paranormal Activity, a low-budget surprise hit. The marketing looks good, but given that the last film directed by the Strause brothers was Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, you might want to keep your skepticism for a little longer.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
I'd just like to be able to play games without having to get up to change the disk.
I guess SONY will kill this thing with the next mandatory firmware update or its going to be a cat and mouse game I just hope that USB key is easily update able.
The usb key is actually a modchip which just happens to connect via usb. Meaning you'll need the usb and the software on it. The software is already on their site to download, and as soon as this gets out into the wild then people will start making their own one and selling it for much less.
I wish that when they did the demo videos "proving" that it's legit, that they'd have a console and a TV set up somewhere where there are no other cables going all over the place. There could easily be another PS3 connected via another HDMI input on the TV and they switched the input when the camera panned away.
If the ps3 could read shares from my Windows based server this would be a godsend for me. I could keep all my games on the server and just run them from the ps3. I seriously hate getting up and swapping disk.
Just don't update? Every update so far has been completely optional, I know you lose playing online, but to be honest I only updated my PS3 from 3.15 today, I just don't care about PS3's online at all.
The way I see it is that sure you have a modded PS3 but at what cost? Not only do you have to move those blu ray images onto the harddrive but then along with that you could never be on PSN again. Along with the steep price tag for something that will inevitably be fixed and just an overall laziness on my part. I would say no thanks every day to this.
I dont go online with my PS3. My PS3 is for rockband and single player games I cant get on PC. IE Red Dead redemption and things like that. For everything else the PC online vastly rapes that of a consoles so for someone like me this is perfect.
$160 to get your $450 console banned and up to $10,000 in fines and legal fee's just isn't worth it to me. I can see hackers and pirates jumping for joy right about now. My only worry will be what Sony may force on us to combat this problem. I'm sure they are scrambling to fix the issue and start removing features and uploading patches. Get ready for weekly firmware updates.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Well, it works, but $160 is extreme... It'll just become free in a month anyways, but good news, it only took how many years? PS4 will be out before this becomes anything like the PSP piracy scene.

Not really convinced.
Plus, it just looks like it puts the PS3 into debug mode. Sony could slap a patch on that pretty fast.
Not to mention the likelihood of a bunch of banned consoles. Sorry, but it isn't worth it, especially at the massive size of PS3 games.
defendlibertyAug 19, 2010
yeah, that MASSIVE size. What about cross-console games on xbox360 that are MAX 9 gigs. That's a day in utorrent.
dirtyfriesAug 19, 2010
1. I've already been threatened once by Comcast for going over the 250 gb limit. Not gonna push that again.
2. Most PS3 games are bigger than 9...even the cross plats since they leave the audio uncompressed.
Besides, ideally, wouldn't you be downloading PS3 exclusives since the Xbox has been hacked for quite some time? That means far larger games.
Regardless, I prefer to pay the devs for their work, and play online without repercussions. This thing is a get rich quick scheme.

From the comments: It is a debug console, look at 44 seconds and you can see the option to "Install Package Files" which is only present on dev and debug consoles
chiefbandit2200Aug 19, 2010
It supposedly tricks the PS3 into thinking it's a debug console.
carlososAug 19, 2010
The mod chip tricks (new firmware?) the console to behave like a debug console.
kamill85Aug 19, 2010
6. Run the game as if the BD disc was in drive
ironpwnageAug 21, 2010
The 4GB limitation isn't that bad as when the game is ripped it isn't one big iso file, but rather all the little files within the iso. Just so long as there isn't a 4GB file within the iso then it'll all be fine, and seeing as they've tested 150 games so far, I think it'll be alright.

not exactly fake, but a very misleading title and story. smacksawAug 20, 2010
I'm saying that the Digg Patriots are hacks.
mywhitenoiseAug 19, 2010
I hope this is the real deal. I bought and own a ton of PS3 games (I think I own around 45 discs), but I'd much rather have my games on my hard drive.
viperx2Aug 19, 2010
Good luck fitting 45 Blu-rays on your hard drive, even if you have upgraded it to some like 500GB.
mywhitenoiseAug 19, 2010
Obviously I wouldn't put all 45 there. I don't mind having 10 at a time, and swapping out every so often.
tnoyAug 19, 2010
It supports loading media off of an external USB HDD. Its pretty easy to get USB RAID enclosures that support up to 8TB these days.
strictneinAug 19, 2010
Yeah, let's buy an external USB 8TB RAID array just so I don't have to get off the couch and swap games...
carlososAug 19, 2010
A 1.5 TB USB drive should be enough for his 45 games but better go with a 2 TB or 3 TB drive for future games (or maybe add a second one)
lawrAug 20, 2010
how full are those Blu-Rays?
Red Faction Guerilla is a 5.86GB download over PSN.
Infamous is a 6.88GB download.
Burnout Paradise Complete Edition is a whopping 3GB.
the Blu-Ray versions are no different.
Just because it's on a Blu-Ray doesn't mean they're filling it up!
viperx2Aug 20, 2010
That's true, but their are a lot of games, some of the best ones (MGS4), that use most of the BRD.
ricopicoukAug 19, 2010
How big is the average PS3 game?
I would be supprised if it was much more than 12gigs.
chiefbandit2200Aug 19, 2010
Some are, but I'm pretty sure most are closer to around 5-10... Still, you can get a 1 terabyte hard drive for pretty cheap these days.

Well, if we're talking multiplatform games, they probably equal their X360 counterparts in size: upwards of 7 GB.
The exclusives, particularly the first-party exclusives, have been all over the place in terms of disc capacity.
ironpwnageAug 21, 2010
Been checking rslog sites, and most of them are about 4 - 5 gigs is they are multi-plat. The only big ones are Uncharted 1/2 which are 23GB and MGS4 which is close to 50. Apparently GT5 is going to be about that size as well.

If this truly does run off of the USB, Sony will have it patched up in a week. I don't care what they're claiming in order to try to sell their product.
Sure, you have the option not to update, but good luck ever signing into PSN again. Or playing newer games that require the updated firmware.
mywhitenoiseAug 19, 2010
On the other hand, you can spend $300 now, buy this USB device, and have access to a s**t ton of good games that were released in the last 3 years. Sounds like a nice trade off to me, multi-player is overrated.

mywhitenoiseAug 19, 2010
Jack, Im saying the PS3 is $300...dumbass, not the USB mod.
jackschitttAug 19, 2010
mywhitenoise: So you're going to spend $300 on a new PS3, and another $170 for the usb unit just to "back up" a bunch of old games that cost less than $20 used?
If you're going to spend nearly $500 and put all that work into it to save that little money, I think you're the one who's the dumbass.

mywhitenoiseAug 19, 2010
lol, you really think I'd only buy this mod to back up games I already own? I'd pirate the s**t out of games I didn't own, or ones that were coming out. And once again, who gives a f**king about being able to sign-in and play boring multiplayer?
And don't give me any s**t about how pirating games doesn't support the developer, because youre alternative of buying used from ebay doesn't either.
jackschitttAug 19, 2010
You know you're making my point for me, right?
Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mywhitenoiseAug 19, 2010
Jack, shut the f**k up already. You obviously don't know how to pirate, and how easy it is to do so. Keep spending more and doing things the hard way. Keep thinking you're saving more money and time than a pirate.
jackschitttAug 19, 2010
Then explain it to me, o wise one.

I can walk and talk at the same time.
chiefbandit2200Aug 19, 2010
I could easily download enough games to make this worth it. Download torrent, go to bed, go to work, hang out with some friends, come home, torrent finished... :D
And if that's too much work, you can easily rent games. And if you really don't want to pay money, go to gamestop, buy a game, dump it, take the game back, and repeat.

@chiefbandit2200
"Otherwise, you'd be s**t out of luck if you bought a new game to play, but didn't have internet access... "
Any games that require a specific firmware version include an update to that firmware update on the disc itself, so that even if you don't have an internet connection the disc can install the firmware update for you. Unless the USB modchip can somehow disable the firmware version check (which is unlikely and also dangerous - the game would crash if it tried to use new firmware features that didn't exist) then you still won't be able to play new games.
sloachAug 20, 2010
Hey guys, just wanted to give you a heads up:
"No, as long as they don't start adding some retarded DRM to new game disks, you'll still be able to play new games. Otherwise, you'd be s**t out of luck if you bought a new game to play, but didn't have internet access... "
Sony includes new firmware on the game disc. There's probably a lot of people who don't have an internet connection, but they're not s**t out of luck when they buy a new game to play.
Unless this mod can overcome the DRM on newer games that will require a minimum firmware greater than the current firmware, pirates will be the only people s**t out of luck ;)
ricopicoukAug 19, 2010
Agreed, however many people including me cant sign into PSN anyway, as I refuse to loose my OtherOS ability on the console.
If this is real, it would be ideal. Especially where it says it disables forced updates.
jackschitttAug 19, 2010
Well if you haven't updated since 3.21, then the ability to disable forced updates is useless to you.
If you're happy being locked into playing older games that don't require updated firmware and never signing into PSN again, then more power to you. But you represent a very, very small subset of PS3 users. This will still be largely useless to 99.5% of the rest of us.
And don't buy their claims that it will work on newer games. Newer games will require newer firmware. And if this is real, firmware that locks this out will be released by month's end.

Especially when it says in the FAQ section:
Q. Can Sony block this with firmware updates?
No thanks.

Did anyone else cringe when he took out the disc and placed it data-side down on top of the console? And then cringe again when you notice there's another one just laying around?
cocodamonkeyAug 19, 2010
Actually he placed it data side up. If you're going to put a disc down it's much safer the way he did it. The data is actually written just below the label, in most cases if you scratch the label your disc is f**ked cause you'll have hit the data layer, if you scratch the bottom of a disc though it's no big deal, it'll usually still work and you can just get it refinished if need be, so long as the scratch doesn't actually hit the data layer (which is much closer to the top than the bottom of the disc).
So in short, no it didn't make me cringe, he did it properly.
jektalAug 20, 2010
It's a lot easier to scratch up the bottom of the disc than it is to break the label
cocodamonkeyAug 20, 2010
I wouldn't say a lot, maybe a little but scratching the bottom of the disc doesn't break it. You need a real gash in the bottom of a disc to actually hit the data layer. Where as any scratch in the label will typically hit the data layer as it's immediately under the label.

There could easily be another PS3 connected via another HDMI input on the TV and they switched the input when the camera panned away.

rely on the source not the video. Its coming from oczmodchips who is a fairly reputable source.

If the ps3 could read shares from my Windows based server this would be a godsend for me. I could keep all my games on the server and just run them from the ps3. I seriously hate getting up and swapping disk.

It looks like this dongle supports homebrew apps as well so that may very well be a possibility.

hope you have some bomb-ass network speed.
ironpwnageAug 21, 2010
An external hard drive would probably be the easiest way, especially with 500GB and 1TB ones now being able to be powered just by usb.

Sony don't worry these things. They are going to make another firmware update and end this exploit.
ironpwnageAug 21, 2010
Just don't update? Every update so far has been completely optional, I know you lose playing online, but to be honest I only updated my PS3 from 3.15 today, I just don't care about PS3's online at all.
puckmaniac33Aug 20, 2010
The way I see it is that sure you have a modded PS3 but at what cost? Not only do you have to move those blu ray images onto the harddrive but then along with that you could never be on PSN again. Along with the steep price tag for something that will inevitably be fixed and just an overall laziness on my part. I would say no thanks every day to this.
insidiusAug 20, 2010
I dont go online with my PS3. My PS3 is for rockband and single player games I cant get on PC. IE Red Dead redemption and things like that. For everything else the PC online vastly rapes that of a consoles so for someone like me this is perfect.

so where can i get the rom dump...... lol
kotcjasonAug 20, 2010
$160 to get your $450 console banned and up to $10,000 in fines and legal fee's just isn't worth it to me. I can see hackers and pirates jumping for joy right about now. My only worry will be what Sony may force on us to combat this problem. I'm sure they are scrambling to fix the issue and start removing features and uploading patches. Get ready for weekly firmware updates.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Wow, let's see...
A) Pay $170 AUD to a pirate group for $5 in parts, or...
B) Carefully choose a few AAA titles and reward the developers of games.
Geez, tough call there.
TheNFLScoutAug 23, 2010
Well, it works, but $160 is extreme... It'll just become free in a month anyways, but good news, it only took how many years? PS4 will be out before this becomes anything like the PSP piracy scene.

So many PS3 games for you to choose. Just use PS jailbreak. http://www.fyygame.com/500g-portable-hdd-with-50-ps3-games.html
