First man fired in space?
Something tells me history will not remember this feat as it did the lunar landings.
spacem00seJul 31, 2010
Not the first to be fired in space. That title belongs to the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

UO was the best MMO ever. Not the best graphics but in terms of play. PVP was serious business.
Here is a cool story bro:
My buddy and myself would hang out at various banks spamming chat looking for guild members. Once we found someone that was interested we would tell them to get all of their items out of the bank. So that they could put them in the guild house. We had a small tower on the Isle of the Avatar.
Once we gated them to the house and they entered. Gank, stab, kill.. We looted their corpse and banned the ghost. Leaving them a long way from anywhere. But along with this there were consequences. We had a lot of people after us so we had to watch our backs all the time. Damn that game was a lot of fun.
fallout22Jul 31, 2010
Amen, true risk, true consequences.
pkonJul 31, 2010
I have wasted many hours, days, weeks and years playing Ultima Online. Once I was done playing on online servers I played on the free UO: Hybrid server... I've played Asheron's Call/2, Everquest, World of Warcraft and to this very day NOTHING beats Ultimate Online in terms of online experience.
I hated how they introduced Trammel since it would mean pking farmers and miners got much more difficult :*( I liked factions tho since I was seriously into pking and faction play.
herculesJul 31, 2010
Since this thread is bringing back memories that I LOVED -- what is a good PvP MMO nowadays? Please don't say DFO.

Ultima online sucked? Compared to any of the MMO's that are out today it is like the epic beard man. The young ones can talk all the want but when it comes to the real action you're going to be begging for your amber lamps

Sorry you misunderstood me, I was talking about Tabula Rasa, the logo of which is on the wall behind him in the picture.

Hehe, I remember seeing Lord British get killed once as he came out of his castle to greet the people. Was f**king hilarious.

I think the post might be talking about an event I heard of in Ultima Online where the Lord British NPC didn't have the 'unkillable' flag set and came out to make a speech for an event and got wasted by players.
spectralsoundsJul 31, 2010
He got killed by a Firefield from a player named Rainz.
Can't believe I remember that. I was a UO fiend for years. Hard Core Pker for a while. I was in The Imperium with Evocare who eventually ended up becoming Lead Designer for UO for a while.
I have many fond memories of that game. Too bad they wrecked it.

Good to see it! Dude was always nice and seemed totally down to earth. I used to work at NCsoft and actually got his office after he was canned. I heard he was leaving and was like whaaaaaat then ran to email my boss about the empty office. Had a window and everything.

Though Garriott hasn't produced a great game for awhile, NCsoft never has. All they're games are cookie cutter, mob bashing, level grinders. Maybe Garriott will finally make UO2. :D
gregus1032Jul 31, 2010
Korea begs to differ.
NCSoft has put out the best PVP MMO's. Lineage, Lineage 2, Guild Wars are all great PVP games.
Closed AccountJul 31, 2010
Guild Wars is only published by NCSoft; it's developed by ArenaNet in the US.
gregus1032Jul 31, 2010
True, but they still made the Lineage franchise, which has sold more copies than any other mmo.

Tabula Rasa, the game he was working on at NCSoft, was designed to be huge. At least considering the alien alphabet that had 100s of verbs and objects, many yet undefined. Too bad games like Tabula Rasa and Ballerium that are gone don't return and stay locked up in the safes. Might still have a potential as a single player game or fan hosted game.
particleman420Jul 31, 2010
according to the beta of tabula rasa, it was a crappy game.
neotechniJul 31, 2010
"many yet undefined."
many yet undefined = many were defined.
gotarJul 31, 2010
Tabula Rasa had potential. I did like the aura of being in a war, not just running around killing space rats. The alien mobs actually warped in from the mother ship, a nice way of handling spawning. Taking cover behind objects was a good strat as it reduced enemy accuracy and increased yours. Not just stand in front of mob push buttons til dead. The defending of the outpost/towns against a mass of invaders was chaotic and fun. Even if you were a low level you could help on the back lines and heal or kill the low level troops. Seeing the huge number of high level mobs warp in by the town you were questing at was pants-s**ttingly sweet. Gave you a sense of being the underdog, not uberleet badass space marine. Too bad it was plagued by bugs and got rushed out so a lot of things didn't get implemented.
It was at least not a fantasy MMOG, needs to be more scifi MMOGs. I think, if any other company than NCSoft would have released TR I think it'd been a much better game overall.
leonffsJul 31, 2010
Contractually he was entitled to the money, and legally they should give it to him.
But let's be honest, he bled NCsoft for all he could and produced aboslute s**t during his tenure. Name one good thing that he made happen at NCsoft.... They hired him because he was a legend in the MMO world with the goal of producing a franchise that would challenge WoW, and they got absolute squat out of him. This would be like signing a baseball player to a record contract and then they go hitless. Frankly, he deserves nothing.
khastJul 31, 2010
Of course, you realize he was only an employee? You remember when Infinity Ward left Activision? They may have been an independent branch of the company, but Activision still called the shots.
Same thing.
kleon777Jul 31, 2010
He was a producer on Guild Wars, and helped maker the game's launch go smoothly.
nexus6caJul 31, 2010
Tabula Rasa was FORCED out the door by the execs in NCSoft in Korea despite the dev team reporting it was not even ready for Alpha tests. By the time the space trip happened, Tabula Rasa was already nearly dead - subs had dropped by a huge amount and the game had apparently lost millions.
NCSoft is a terrible company and I will never purchase another game that they publish. Ever.

"First man fired in space?" - No.

UO was the best MMO ever until EA bought it and decided to make it stupid-friendly. Localization was one of the first major downfalls. Trammel was pretty s**tty - "OH WE NEED TO MAKE IT EASIER AND GIVE THE OPTION TO STAY AWAY FROM MURDERERS!"
WTF?! The threat of being killed and having all your crap looted was fun. I remember when leaving guard limits to run to another town was risky. Minoc to Vesper? Shiiit. As a noob, thats a scary run!
Magic items? They had value! Now, a vanquishing katana is a piece of s**t... as is a GM made full set of armor. Its all about enchanting and other crap pulled from the "OMG! NEED TO LEVEL UP!" mmo's.
Rare items - when an item was rare.. it was RARE. As in only one or two per server. Now if theres an item available, EA made sure that everyone has the ability to get it.
Stealing was possible. Now, everything is blessed or some crap making the ability to steal impossible or worthless, and apparently the only purpose is to steal from NPC's.
And finally - gold. GOLD HAD VALUE. The first time I hit 1k gold? Felt f**ken awesome. 10k gold? Holy crap! I made it to 100k and I was able to buy my first house!
f**k EA. You f**ked up my favorite game, and possibly the best MMO ever. No other MMO has come close to the greatness UO was pre-EA.
nyuuraJul 31, 2010
hey i followed Tabula Rasa throughout its development and was so hyped for it and when it came out, it was so awful and disappointing. then they shut the whole damn thing down. can richard garriot just give me 1 million dollars to make everything cool between us? its really nothing for him, and it would help me pursue my dream of never having to work for a living for about 15-20 years. i figure since he got all this money from going after his dream, that maybe he could help a longtime fan out with his.
i can dream can't i?
