This is a good move for Google. Its an area that Google haven't invested in before and its a growing market.

Gaming is BIG business as we all know & it's no wonder GOOGLE are investing in this industry !!!
czarvalvadorJul 12, 2010
Since when is Mafia Wars and Farmiville part of "The Industry"?
effoffpunkJul 12, 2010
Since they started making money.
formerbabbyJul 12, 2010
Gaming goes beyond the console my friend.
czarvalvadorJul 12, 2010
Yes, there is also the PC.
I understand this years E3 overglorified the abominations that are Farmville and Mafia Wars with terrible motion control games, but come on. That is just insulting the industry.

I, for one, welcome my new overlord.
mattharvey716Jul 12, 2010
Say what you like about farmville/ zynga, it makes money and thats what counts.
dankoozyJul 13, 2010
farmville is a scam
therefore farmville is evil
so the company that makes farmville is also evil
and any company that would invest in them is also evil.
that and the fact that 'zynga' sounds like a completely made up Web 2.0-style name. Enough jingly sounding vaguely african 2-syllable company names alreadyComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

How is Farmville a scam ?
dickyt83Jul 12, 2010
Couldn't you have just put $200 million in the title?
kthoma22Jul 12, 2010
Google has recruited Zygna into it's hit crew.
captininsanityJul 12, 2010
Funding Farmville?!?!?! WTF happened to "don't be evil"!
lancertJul 12, 2010
I thought that Google wasn't going to "evil"?!?!/

Zynga is gigantic. They make a TON of money from people who do the 'sign up for free points' and 'buy points with actual money' s**t from Mafia Wars and ads from all their games.
Investing $200m in a company that's going to be making billions in the next few years? Google knows what it's doing.
toxicityjJul 12, 2010
I play the games occasionally on facebook, obviously avoiding paying anything for that crap, and it seems like they've completely phased out "sign up for free points" in favor of the more direct "give us money for some pixels"
generalobviousJul 12, 2010
The real reason they're doing this is to mine Facebook's data.
These games are only profitable because they have access to user/friend data once the application is allowed. In fact, every (most) applications out there make their money this way because marketing companies eat this s**t up and pay well.
By investing this amount of money, the data is now funneled back to Google.
rpatrick819Jul 12, 2010
You are a genius. That makes too much sense.
herculesJul 12, 2010
How can Google claim to "do no evil" now?
Closed AccountJul 12, 2010
I had no idea they owned BOTH games
May they burn in hell

Article author can not write the article with the syntax.

I don't care. I want the one with the bigger geebees.
formerbabbyJul 12, 2010
Sound investment from a financial perspective; however, Google could be vulnerable to bad media from privacy issues. Both Facebook and Zynga make people nervous enough.
nanny11Jul 13, 2010
Wow, more profits for Google. They only get the profits, when people allow the application
coloma21Jul 14, 2010
The best next big company is the creators of restaurant city, hotel city, and nightclub city LOL
