ESPN on Xbox 360: A tipping point for cable workarounds?

techflash.com — If the deal comes together, it seems like the type of arrangement that could cause a lot more people to consider dropping their cable service -- contributing to a groundswell that should force cable companies to rethink their approach. — Submitted Jan 19, 2010

I do phone support for a larg cable company, and this will not "cause a lot more people to consider dropping their cable service". Most people don't understand what an "input" is on a TV. Only about half of Xbox owners even go online with it. I have no doubt this will be the future, but as it stands I just can't imagine the average person who calls me on the phone to be able to set this up or even understand that a video game console can provide them with ESPN.

I have both, and to be quite honest the UI on the xbox-netflix is much more easy to use. I know my girlfriend loads up the xbox when she wants to watch netflix, while I use the PS3 usually. The only thing about the xbox that really peevs me is that game developers have to scale down games so that they can fit it on the xbox (which doesn't come standard with the HD so they need to make their games cache properly with 0 HD space). But I completely agree with you that the PS3 is a better piece of hardware. p.s. the bluray isn't free, you still bought the gaming system 8)

Not when literally the only channels I watch are FX, HBO, Showtime, and Comedy Central.

That's more than a little lame. :\

And it had better be ad free - it's pay TV, after all. Under no circumstance, for any price no matter how low, will I ever watch ads again. Until then, I am perfectly happy stealing any and all TV in glorious high definition and watching it whenever and where ever the f**k I want - you can get a 1.5TB hard drive for around $100, and even a paltry 100GB/month transfer limit is enough for daily viewing if you have a life besides TV.

In the article, the author mentioned netflx account, hulu etc, iirc.

Microsoft advertises Xbox Live with almost every game, and yet half of Xbox 360 owners are not online. In a perfect world, we would have all already jumped to Hulu and Bittorrent. In the real world, albeit from my limited and biased point of view, this deal will effect a fraction of a fraction of the population, mainly because the concept is too abstract for your average Cable viewer.

Re: Boxee - Seeing as Hulu's compatibility with third party devices and software is constantly in flux, why not go the cheaper route and hook up your computer to your tv?
