Kill 10 rats... all over again. Bioware chose to play it safe and made a Star Wars skin for WoW.
mbraynardJul 30, 2011
But... they are womp rats.
And you can bull's-eye womp rats in your T-16. They're not much bigger than two meters.
unattendedpancaJul 30, 2011
You shoot small animals for fun? Sick, dude.
RedLeader1987Jul 30, 2011
I need to pick up some power converters from Toshi Station before you can fly that T-16 again.

Here's hoping it gives WoW a good hard kick in the nuts.
World of Warcraft developers have become arrogant and lazy. They need to be knocked down quite a few pegs.

It's about time for a new game to take over.

You can't dethrone WoW, and any attempt to do so is ultimately a fools errand. WoW gained what it got by making a solid MMO that, most importantly, marketed itself broadly and opened itself to a casual market with mass accessibility and polish.
Even if SW:TOR is the most polished, accessible, and marketed game in the world, the venn diagram of people who 1) play games , 2) love Star Wars , and 3) Play MMOs, is actually fairly small.
The Star Wars name probably does worse for sustainability than "generic fantasy" which WoW is for the most part. The average joe and jane knows orcs, elves and dwarves. You set them up with that, they can handle themselves fine. Nobody but Star Wars fans know Dantooine, Sith Lords and vibroblades. The only base you attract is one that is both limited and fickle.
EA is banking that the name and marketing will lure enough people in to remain profitable -- it may. But will it "crush" wow? No. Ask Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts what they thought about Star Wars: Galaxies before launch. They thought it would crush all the competition as well, just from the license: it only have about half a million users.

In your Venn Diagram, isn't circle 3 entirely contained in circle 1?
unattendedpancaJul 30, 2011
Nah. MMO gamers and "traditional" games are not necessarily all inclusive. I know plenty of people who play nothing other than MMOs, and I know plenty of people who refuse to play any MMO.

Even the best of games get old and people get tired of playing them. Not because the game is bad but because they want to try something different. If a game comes along that has the right play mechanics, is free from bugs, supports and facilitates good social interaction, and has a story line that's deep enough to hook people there's no reason that it cannot succeed.
My wife for example wouldn't go looking for a fantasy or sci-fi game but she does play WoW. Not because the fantasy element draws her in but because she enjoys the social interaction of the game. She doesn't play single player games but does enjoy casual games. If another game comes along and gives that same (or better)level of interaction then the MMO of another flavor should do just fine.
That being said I don't see any game coming out right now that would crush WoW. At least not right off. I would think a good MMO game could come out and take a reasonable chunk of the player base away but not most of the player base.
Let's say that SW:TOR builds a reasonable player base of 3 million within the first year of release and that most of those players came from playing WoW. With just over 11 million players currently WoW would be down to around 8 million players. It would not be so much of a killing blow but a very good first volley leading up to the first expansion.
If they don't pull in close to 3 million in the first year I don't see them being able to topple WoW. If they do then good because it creates some viable competition and could stand to make WoW a better game because of it.
Vanilla WoW is good but it's time to bring out the Darth Chocolate!
diggaholic1Jul 31, 2011
If you and your wife are looking for a good game that will involve alot of social interaction then you should really look up Guild Wars 2.
ryuzaki90Jul 30, 2011
Uhhh... because so many people that play WoW love Warcraft. I've met very few people that even have played the RTSes before getting in to WoW.
unattendedpancaJul 30, 2011
Never mentioned any affinity to the lore. WoWs traditional and familiar orcs and elves theme is something that is instantly recognizable and compelling to the largest of audiences. Star Wars is not.
ryuzaki90Jul 30, 2011
Well Star Wars is to SciFi as Warcraft is to Fantasy.
unattendedpancaJul 31, 2011
Not really. Star Wars divides a lot of the sci-fi community. Some see it as a trashy space opera that doesn't deserve to be labeled science fiction (Hard sci-fi enthusiasts) while the others accept it.
Warcraft has far less division in the fanbase.
Also, it's just simply a lot easier for people to enter a light high-fantasy world than a sci-fi world. I don't know why, but if you look at a bookstore, for example, you'll see fantasy books outnumber sci-fi in the same section by 4 to 1.
ryuzaki90Jul 31, 2011
Warcraft has plenty a division of the fanbase. A lot of people utterly despise WoW and what it has become; for much different reasons than a sci-fi person might dislike Star Wars, so I'll give you that.
But I don't know if like Star Wars or not will be much of a bar to entry. Of course SW people will gravitate towards it, but my point wasn't so much about Lore in Warcraft as many people started it playing not caring that it was Warcraft.
kartman2001Jul 30, 2011
EVE Online FTW
bobster00001Jul 30, 2011

Bioware is famous for it's choose your own adventure/rpg style of gaming. The Old Republic is stepping out of their safe zone in a big way so just because the developer is a big name in rpg's doesn't mean those rpg's have anything worthwhile to bring to the mmo world.
Knights of the Old Republic has absolutely nothing to do with The Old Republic. The Old Republic takes place 300 years after those games. It's a different time with different characters. It's as much a sequel of KotOR as Jedi Academy is. They're both Star Wars games in the time period before the fall of the sith. That's it.
World of Warcraft may be 7 years old but it doesn't mean blizzard has been sitting on their asses this entire time. They've updated the graphics several times. Just recently with cataclysm they changed the lighting and water effects. They've changed the gameplay repeatedly to make the game more accessible and to improve the dull aspects of the game. And considering WoW is 7 years old, SW:TOR doesn't look like the graphics are much better than WoW's at all.
the massive amount of pre-orders has nothing to do with the game itself. Bioware is giving early access to players who pre-order and they're numbering the pre-orders so earliest orders get the earliest access.
As far as hype goes for SW:TOR, most people already know from beta videos that it's basically WoW with a Star Wars skin.
That being said, I'll give it a try but there's no way in hell SW:TOR will ''crush'' WoW
orlandinJul 30, 2011
I think WoW will take a hit, but it wont be crushed. Age of the game may be what it has in its favor. Long time players will be hesitant to give up something they put that much time into. They will have a month or two of lighter server loads and still make money. If Blizzard wanted to ruin the launch, they would announce the release of Diablo 3 for the same time period. I despise WoW, and really hope this one does cause them some grief, but don't expect a death blow.
