That's not a legend, you can actually do that, even on the original NES version with no mods.

I've pulled it off, its mostly luck and jumping at the correct time. Its doable with alot of other flag poles, not just 3-3.

Didn't fall for the Mew under the truck, though.

chaosblade77Aug 22, 2010
There's a very similar method that lets you catch mew on Route 24 the first time you get to Cerulean City. I think it's the earliest you can catch it without cheating.
theodenkingAug 21, 2010
I remember a kid told me about the mew under the truck trick and I said, "no, that's f**king stupid".

kali075Aug 21, 2010
They put a little easter egg, likely in reference to the Mew Truck rumor, in the remakes.
In Fire Red and Leaf Green for GBA, you can go back to the SS. Anne's dock later on without performing any kind of glitches. If you surf over to the right side, there is a truck, just like the original Red and Blue versions. If you press A on it, you find a Lava Cookie.
championchapAug 21, 2010
Aha, Pikablu.. I remember that.
Wasn't it supposed to be Marill or something?
Anyway, this article is full of crap.
You could get to the ice key and a load of the secret eggs in banjo kazooie without a gameshark code, you just had to type in some stupidly long code in the sand castle for each of them.
For the ice key you had to type CHEAT, each letter would Moo and then afterwards you would have to type this in, but this time the letters wouldn't make a sound until the end.
NOW YOU CAN SEE A NICE ICE KEY WHICH YOU CAN HAVE FOR FREEComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I don't remember any urban legends, but there are a couple of actual things about Fox's father
When you beat the real Andross, you get led out of the exploding base by the ghost, presumably, of your father.
And if you unlock expert mode, Fox has sunglasses on during the game, making him look like his father.

tacodog76Aug 21, 2010

kinseyincanadaAug 22, 2010
i thought you used the cannon to get to the top of the castle where Yoshi was.
Closed AccountAug 21, 2010
One of my friends once told me you could get fire power from a fire flower in Super Mario 64, and he drew an elaborate map and instructions on how to get it. After a couple hours of trying to get it to work, I knew I'd been had. Bastard.
2ndsinsilenceAug 21, 2010
Easy. Upon receiving 120 stars, get in the cannon outside and point towards the waterfall on the side of the castle. If you hit it just right, Mario will pass through the waterfall and enter a secret cavern with a door that requires 120 stars to open it. You'll find the 121st star through that door and presumably lots of other fun stuff.
At least, that's what I heard. I'm sure every school had their own circle of rumors.

libertyprimeAug 21, 2010
No, she remains dead. Get over it.
chaosblade77Aug 22, 2010
You could only use a Gameshark or mods (for the PC version) to do it. As far as I know, there was no legit way to do it without an external application messing with the game.
And even if you do use something to get her back, it can screw up and freeze the game in certain spots, so you either have to deal with that or use a guide so you know when you can and can't use her.
jd72277Aug 21, 2010
What about the half pipe in T&C Surf Designs (NES) and the motorcycle level in the original Spy Hunter? Those were the greater mysteries of my generation.
johnweselyAug 21, 2010
I can't believe that anyone else has played T&C. The surfing in that game is stupid hard.
jd72277Aug 21, 2010
Was it hard or just impossible? No matter what, you go to the bottom of the screen and it's over.
How dated was that skateboarding? 80s game featuring tricks from the non-Dogtown 70s! Jumping s**t while your board stayed on the ground and stuff...
doughenryiiAug 21, 2010
This game is impossible, I still own it.
jd72277Aug 21, 2010
Impossible, and it pretty much sucks. I grew up on the east coast in a beach town so I had many surf/skate related shirts as a kid. I was really into T&C since they used what I thought to be "the ninja symbol" as a kid. I was psyched to see the had a NES game but was instantly let down.
allisonaxeAug 22, 2010
it isn't impossible, just requires lots of practice to get good at. the surfing part is very much trial and error until you learn the motions required to keep the surfboard from falling too far (downward motions and and then immediately up-diagonally to gain momentum to get back up the wave)
The game doesn't have an ending, though, you just keep doing levels until you hit 99 and then it loops back to the beginning. Its aimless, but I still find it to be really fun.
fakexsoundAug 21, 2010
"Only through Gameshark could you actually unlock the little psychic feline."
Wrong! I got Mew, along with an official "birth certificate" when the Pokemon Center and Pikachu VW Beetle came to one of the local malls. There was a big setup where Nintendo employees would link up with people's gameboys and trade any pokemon for a Mew.
goweigusAug 21, 2010
I was at a toys r us once and witnessed a contest winner receive a Mew officially. Some guy was there and had this device he plugged the gameboy color into and gave it to the dude.
pwneAug 21, 2010
I had one of those Toys R Us Mew when I got a pack of stickers from shopping there when the first pokemon movie was in theaters. Behind the Mew sticker it said something like "Winner!" and read the back and shat bricks. I got my copy of Yellow a month before Christmas and captured a Caterpie on the way there to trade.
/coolstorybro
sleepydumbdudeAug 21, 2010
I worked at Toys R Us when we had this contest and we all got Mews with the machine. Some guy fired for selling them for 15 bucks.
blackchrispAug 21, 2010
I assume you both know that you can also get mew without special events or gamesharks. The secret was found just a few years back, and involves a little glitch where you pause the game right before you enter a battle, leave, then fight certain pokemon; it's fairly complex. I'm not sure how they figured it out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkF7Xjxn9jc
chris1280Aug 21, 2010
Totally remember waiting in the line with my gameboy at the ready.
You had to have one free slot for the mew to go in or you wouldnt get it ( or it overwrite something )
lagerandcrispsAug 21, 2010
Wow. What a geek.
pikkonxAug 21, 2010
One thing I found interesting is that if you use a Gameshark to revive Aeris, there's still scenes where she talks and participates as if nothing happened. Either she was originally going to be revived at some point or her death was added to the plot at a late stage in the game's development.
iignotusAug 21, 2010
There's only like 2 scenes with any actually new dialog, and they're both incredibly mundane. They were probably just in case you got to those areas in the game before you were "supposed" to, with Aeris still alive.

But you don't find him under the truck through legitimate gameplay, which was the urban legend.
Closed AccountAug 21, 2010
"Only through Gameshark could you actually unlock the little psychic feline."
Article is incorrect, and while the method may be different, the end result (which is far more important) is that it IS possible to catch Mew, without Gameshark.
The only reason people latched onto the truck theory is that there really isn't any reason for the truck to be there. You can't even see it in the game unless you trade Pokemon from another game or purposefully put off going on the SS Anne for way longer than anyone would normally do.
Even if the truck didn't exist, the legend of Mew being obtainable would still exist.
sirbetaAug 21, 2010
Sure it would. I was only basing my comment based on my past experience with it. The only legit "get mew" rumor was the truck. I assumed the article was referencing that entirely.
toolsinashedAug 21, 2010
What the hell IS that truck for then?

karaiAug 21, 2010
Actually, if you have 100 hours of played time in red/blue, the SS Anne returns and you can go on it again. I spend a lot of idle time in Red racking up hours to test this, and it is true. Though I had a gameshark back then and had that item where you could walk through walls, it was still interesting to discover.
But yeah, get surf, run around for 100 hours, come back, check out truck. Though there is absolutely nothing in the area of the SS Anne to care about.
chaosblade77Aug 22, 2010
I don't know anything about the 100 hours thing, but it would be a lot quicker to try that with an emulator and set the speedup option really high, then put something the key to activate it.
Unless it's like FF7, which I played on an emulator a few years ago and it's time counter is somehow separate, so my counter after beating the game at level ~90 and getting a Gold Chocobo and do most of the side quests was only 36 hours or something.
blazingbunnyAug 21, 2010

vskbadcrcAug 21, 2010
Glad someone else already posted this. I remember getting Mew when I played the two original games, it still involved some trickery in the game, but it was something that could be accomplished in the game without modifying the game or using a cheat device.

Kinda off-topic, but maybe someone can refresh my memory:
In the first double-dragon for NES, there was a way you could use the baseball bat (2nd level?), swing at the air in two certain places, and power-up to like the maximum setting. Anyone know how to do that still?
worktruckAug 21, 2010
You can find it on gamefaqs here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/563405-double-dragon/cheats
You basically had to walk up and allow these 2 enemies to come on screen, then walk away until they disappeared off screen, and then come back to max out your hearts. Sort of like bypassing the boss on level 2.
The baseball bat trick was at the end of the game so that you would have this funky looking weapon to beat Machine Gun Willy with.
skektekAug 21, 2010
I don't know about a secret level but the end of the game looped back to the beginning separated only by a one way jump that was supposed to be impossible to jump from beginning to end but wasn't if you timed it just right so effectively you could start the game and go directly to the end.

ellimistxAug 21, 2010

smurfenAug 21, 2010
http://banjokazooie.wikia.com/wiki/Ice_Key
"In Banjo-Kazooie, the Ice Key is found in Wozza's Cave in a large alcove, although the room is blocked by an unbreakable transparent wall of ice. Entering the code "CHEAT NOW YOU CAN SEE A NICE ICE KEY WHICH YOU CAN HAVE FOR FREE" on the Sandcastle floor in Treasure Trove Cove will dissolve the wall, allowing the player to access the key"
UnrealitymagAug 22, 2010
Whaaaaaat.
OK, this totally blows my mind.
And yes I wrote the original article.
Closed AccountAug 22, 2010
yup, these Banjo-Kazooie cheats were one of the most well kept secrets in video game history.
Rare did the same with the GoldenEye cheats, where the player just needed to enter a code instead of beating the required times for levels. I was pissed because, as a kid with no access to internet videos (it was 1997, duh), it took me a long time to earn those cheats and then a few years later they release codes for them.. wtf!
This further fuelled the video game urban legend of playing as "All Bonds" in the game (Sean Connery, Roger Moore, etc). This "All Bonds" cheat should have definitely made this list of urban legends.

my memory of ff7 is a bit hazy. wasnt there something specifically for her that was impossible to get until after she died or something?
dforspidAug 21, 2010
I believe it was difficult to get, but most players wouldn't find it until after she died, but my memories are hazy too.
No one Google it, that would be too easy.
darkstar949Aug 21, 2010
You could get her ultimate weapon from the Golden Saucer before she died, but you had to invest a lot of time in order to do so. Likewise, her ultimate limit break is something that is very difficult to get on the first disk without spending a lot of time grinding. I seem to recall that most people didn't start seeing the final limit breaks until later into the second disk, or on the third disk.
stormtrooprAug 21, 2010
I always thought the split second in the church was intentional. Like a fading memory or some such.
Closed AccountAug 21, 2010
I'm pretty sure that scene where she appears in the church, was supposed to portray her past memory when you first enter the church again; maybe her ghost is still there, and is happy. That's at least how my 13 year old self took it. I didn't go OMG MAYBE ARIES LIVES.

Yeah, we got our first computer with internet with dial-up around 97-98. Remember though, this was internet 1.0. The thing was still taking its baby steps.

I seem to remember another one concerning Duke Nukem 3D. It was a cameo by the space marine from the Doom franchise and he was dead on the ground in a small shrine or something with a weapon near him. Supposedly, there was a way you could revive the space marine and have him fight with you by pressing all sorts of buttons or typing certain words, but nothing seemed to have worked. It was only a cameo and nothing more.

He is mostly right on Golden Eye, but wrong on two minor points. The Developers didn't "move the code" to put the base out of reach, the base is in its original location. They intended to code a boat to access it, but ran out of space or time. Also there is a gun in the base, a Destovei, but it doesn't have the code attached so you can pick it up.
It took longer for me to program the game shark code to get there (a no clip code) than I spent on the island. Sice there really isn't much there, it is more interesting as a lesson in game design than it is as an actual place.

I remember hearing that in goldeneye 007 there was some way to get an alternate ending where you could see Natalya naked. Never worked. : (

"Some of these games are old school, some less so..."
So videogames from the nineties are considered "old school"? Maybe I'm just too "old", period. :)

I don't know how many times I tried getting Frogfucious on Super Mario RPG. I wanted that to be true sooooooo bad!

What, no "All Bonds" mode from Goldeneye?

That existed (with the help of a Game Shark).

Do you guys remember the legend about being able to get Samus Aran in Super Mario RPG?
Anybody? or is that just me?

Yeah, I heard rumors that Link was recruitable, too. That was more believable, since he actually makes a cameo..

Samus makes a cameo too - she was sleeping in one of the rooms in the castle.
