dugg for "view as one page" button. Thank you!
theinformerAug 23, 2010
Color Buster is a little known DOS game that's been recreated for the iPhone. Love it!
weprinAug 23, 2010
They break up articles into multiple pages in order to gather statistics regarding how long the article held readers' interest (probably for marketing/advertising reasons).
You might have noticed that after using the "View as one page" button, each image didn't load until you scrolled down through the article. In this way, they still achieve the same data collection as with the one-per-page method, because each section of the page caused a postback to the server to load the next image.
I hope this method of doing things catches on and more sites follow in their footsteps!
hakonanAug 23, 2010
I never knew! Thank you.
thedougemAug 23, 2010
May this groundbreaking advancement in the rendering of web pages spread and prosper.

10 Classic PC Games That Found New Life on the iPhone...
...all ruined by horrible controls.
diggmat1cAug 23, 2010
I know. Seriously, if Apple doesn't wake the f**k up and make a gamepad for the iPhone by time they release Game Center, I am going to so pissed. On screen joysticks are f**king stupid.
Closed AccountAug 23, 2010
I've been waiting for a game pad since the original iPhone was release. I have NO idea why it's not out there yet... It makes no sense whatsoever...
thabboywannabAug 23, 2010
I know this probably isn't allowed on the iphone store but the android system has an app that allows bluetooth connection to a wii controller (works awesome on NES/SNES emulators). Pretty fun to play 2 player Super Mario kart on my Droid. There might be an iPhone version if you look for it.
Here's a demo of it. http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2010/05/wii_controller_app_for_android_goes_live
Also FYI the article says its a 3.99$ app, but there are alternatives for free on the android market.
phoenixxkAug 23, 2010
Face it. Most of these games have novelty value and little else. Most genuine ports would have been played for thrity seconds and forgoten, because they are unplayable. s**tty controls, tiny little screen.
Suck it fanboys. This goes for Android too.
Closed AccountAug 23, 2010
I will suck it good
andrihbAug 23, 2010
No, not monkey island. It's strictly a point and click game so its ok on an iphone.
bobon123Aug 23, 2010
Well, some title (Sim City, Myst, Monkey Island, Plants vs Zombies), as mainly mouse oriented could work on a touch screen. Others (Prince of Persia, Doom), are just plainly stupid, sent to the Apple Store just for the vintage value of the title.
padd0016Aug 23, 2010
Just finished Doom on the iPod. The controls were surprisingly good.
Closed AccountAug 23, 2010
Have you tried some of them? Some make complete sense on the touch screen. Plants vs Zombies makes more sense on the touch UI then with a mouse. Don't dis' it till you try it.
grammerpantsAug 23, 2010
Plants vs. Zombies......this is a classic game?

kolop1Aug 23, 2010
Is it online?
kleon777Aug 23, 2010
I can play that on my iPhone too.
deslockAug 23, 2010
For free?
Can you also install the SCUMM emulator so you can play all of the Monkey Island games that you once owned and now have the ROMs for? Or do you need to buy each and every one of them and install them on your device?
And Sega Genesis games? And SNES ones too?
kleon777Aug 24, 2010
"Can you also install the SCUMM emulator so you can play all of the Monkey Island games that you once owned and now have the ROMs for?"
Yes, I have a SCUMM emulator on my iPhone.
disexAug 23, 2010
Android phone's have largely had pretty s**tty GPU's which is why 3D gaming has kind of been non-existent on the platform. Although that will probably change pretty fast with new phones like the Epic 4G that has the PowerSGX540 GPU which is quite a bit better then the iPhone 4's SGX535.
stoanhartAug 23, 2010
The Vibrant, too, has the SGX540. I can max out the graphics for Quake 3 at the phone's native resolution, and it's very smooth. Just a shame that playing an FPS on a touch screen is practically impossible.
808atheistAug 23, 2010
f**k, we have SOTN on PSX for our phone.
stuntaneousAug 24, 2010
Who gives a crap. This has been homebrew on the DS for how long? Better yet, why the facination with overpriced retro games anyway?
ps- last I noticed, there's even a 286 emulator for the DS, go nuts.
kolop1Aug 23, 2010
I love Doom, but it's ass on the iPhone.
scoobynoobAug 23, 2010
Dugg for using "ass" as an adjective.
donteAug 23, 2010
It's also been released on just about everything that's run on batteries in the past 15 year (including my old TI-84 calculator). So the iPhone hardly breathed any life into this game - it just came along for the ride.
stuntaneousAug 24, 2010
It it wasn't thrown at you as a special novelty, on a random platform and cost something (yes, if it were free you'd perceive it as having less worth) you wouldn't a) be talking about this now and most likely b) wouldn't even be playing Doom because you had so many other arguably 'better' games to play.
7king7kingAug 23, 2010
Doom was horrific when it was first released..i remember it was 1994..before it was Wolfenstein 3D
andrihbAug 23, 2010
I'm really happy that Monkey Island is being played again.
bracomadarAug 23, 2010
Where the f**k is Wolfenstein 3D on this list?
mysterycowAug 23, 2010
Exactly.
FTA:
The mother of all first-person shooters, this game is so iconic that it spawned a web community dedicated to getting other devices to play it. As for the iPhone, we can safely say: "It plays Doom."
First seven words couldn't be more wrong. Wolfenstein owns.
admdrewAug 23, 2010
meh, wolfenstein was awesome when it first came out, but then was soundly usurped by doom very shortly after. the effect doom had on the gaming world was incredibly significant, dramatically more so than wolfenstein's.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
fahrvergnuugenAug 23, 2010
/s/Plans vs Zombies/Wolfenstein\ 3D/
israfel555Aug 23, 2010
Screw that. Where the f**k is Civilization on this list? It's pretty damn good on the iPhone!
andyd273Aug 24, 2010
I've only paid for 2 games for my iPhone, Wolf 3D and CivRev. Both are pretty good for casual gaming.
stuntaneousAug 24, 2010
Haven't you realised, these lists are mostly arbitrary in their choices. I have no idea why the years-long spam of 'top ten' style lists have been so popular on Digg.
myztryAug 23, 2010
"The result is a new boom in innovation, the likes of which we haven’t seen in about 20 years."
There is a very simple reason for this. In many ways devices like the iPhone are like the old skool devices of 20 years ago, especially pre-PC (such as the C64 and Amiga). They have a stable known configuration which takes away so many complicating factors. You don't need to ask if it can run Crysis because you already know it can't.
If people can't be lazy and just rely on ever more powerful hardware then they have to think. Not quite to the degree of the 64K demo scene who deliberately impose limits on the system in order to push their own skills but nowhere like many modern applications where the software almost becomes irrelevant with the suggestion you need more powerful hardware (such as GFX cards) to make up for the intellectual shortfall.
wildAug 23, 2010
[it's ironic that limitations also help spurn innovation.]
As someone who works in a "creative" field, I can tell you that restrictions are your biggest asset for creativity.
russ3Aug 23, 2010
the oregon trail one sucks, not worth the time or money.
how is sim city?
wreckognizeAug 23, 2010
Its a damn good port of SimCity 3000. I like it a lot.
oltpAug 23, 2010
I didn't much care for it, the menu system seems bulky and it's difficult to place objects reliably, you really have to zoom in to a microscopic level. It also seems to crash a lot on me.
nibordudeAug 23, 2010
I downloaded the version from a while back. Apparently there's a new version out. The app I have is called, "Sim City," and the new version is called, "Sim City Deluxe."
From my experience with the version I have, I gotta say it's got a lot of bugs. For some reason the only source for water that actually seems to work is the water towers. Pumping stations and desalination plants don't seem to function during gameplay, which, is rather annoying when trying to build a large city because you end up putting a hundred water towers right next to each other. That's probably the biggest bug I've come across.
Another problem I have with the old version is the removal of tools that are really important to building a successful city. You can't alter the terrain, which, is important in trying to build seaports because the zone needs to be right at water level. Also you do not have the option of two lane roads, highways, subways, and a fair amount of other things that really add variety to building a city.
Putting all that aside though, I believe they did a fair job making it user friendly on the touch screen and it is fun to mess around with on trips. Hopefully this newer version is better, I know I'm gonna end up buying it.
rudeturnipAug 23, 2010
There's a couple of good Scorched Earth clones for iOS, too.
kernrifficAug 23, 2010
Kil-A-Ton is really, really good. I wish there was a direct port though… no napalm is a deal breaker.

neutron7Aug 23, 2010
Descent 2 would be fun on an ipad with accelerometer control
snareguy17Aug 23, 2010
Not just old PC games...but Genesis games as well. I downloaded Shining Force this past week and feel like I got absolutely nothing done at work because I was playing it the entire day...everyday.
grammerpantsAug 23, 2010
That game, is an absolute gem! The entire series was awesome, though I never played the ps2 one.
arcookeAug 23, 2010
If there's one thing the iPhone definitely has going for it, it's the wide variety of good games. Games on android suck.. Word Fued (same as Words With Friends) is the only one I play and actually enjoy. Robo Defense is pretty good too, but it gets a little repetitive after a while.
Can anyone suggest some QUALITY android games? Aside from emulators. As in, not s**tty games thrown together in a week (aka 99% of android games).
I love my Droid X, but damnit the market is crap.
tacojohn48Aug 23, 2010
Word feud is spelled this way. It took me a minute to find it in the market searching for fued.
arcookeAug 23, 2010
Gah.. good call.
My nickname on there is "beer" if you want to play sometime. :)

Super KO Boxing 2 is awesome. Best boxing game since Punch Out.

deannaramaAug 23, 2010
Apple and a slideshow? Buried :/
macparrotAug 23, 2010
Except it wasn't a slideshow in that it would reload the entire page. Just one little box that refreshes for each game. Next time actually try it.
nidstylesAug 23, 2010
More like Apple advertising.
mabakerbrakerAug 23, 2010
Enough that the whole Digg is one huge Google-Android ad company so it’s only fair.
strucktureAug 23, 2010
I need a way to play Thief 1 and 2 and System Shock 1 and 2. I bought Thief: TDP and couldn't play it because I'm not a genius with computers and even following walkthroughs I couldn't make it work. They just don't run well on XP or later, I guess. Unless someone would be the best bro in the universe and tell me....
punchcardzAug 23, 2010
SOMEONE PORT XCOM!!!!
stuntaneousAug 24, 2010
I'd rather someone just make a fricken worthy sequel. You can only play the original so many times (even if that is a s**tload of times)
blatsekAug 23, 2010
Too bad the controls are god awful on touch screen phones. I don't even bother with getting any games anymore. I hope that rumored Playstation Android PSP phone is real. That sounds like the greatest ultimate combination. Finally i'll be able to play emulators instead of getting irritated after 30 seconds because the controls are so awful.
djaynessAug 23, 2010
"The open marketplace means anyone can create a game"
The app store on iTunes is probably the most closed market place I can think of. Only iPhones can access it, you need iTunes in the first place and you would have to be an absolute iDiot to think any of that is in anyway open.
theinformerAug 23, 2010
That's what Cydia is for.
acid_jazzAug 23, 2010
Rock is faster than Cydia.
macparrotAug 23, 2010
You mean it's closed like the XBox and pretty much every other game console out there? You don't HAVE to buy an iPhone...or develop games for it...or go through Apple's admittedly crappy submission system to get it going. And yet they still do. I wonder why?
designetAug 23, 2010
who mentioned consoles? It's the most closed SMARTPHONE marketplace out there
sixthreeAug 23, 2010
It's also indisputably the best marketplace available to any smartphone.
badlogikAug 23, 2010
Make a product and go to Walmart and put it on a shelf. Didn't work, did it? Yet, you can if you want do this on iTunes. Show me a marketplace that doesn't have its own brand of rules limiting its products, or do you buy everything from yard sales?
francisbaptisteAug 23, 2010
I didn't mind Doom on the iPhone. Obviously one has to lower their expectations when playing a game like that on your phone. It looks alright. The controls are hard, but you're playing it on a screen with no buttons: there's obviously going to be troubles. That being said, it's almost always too easy or too hard. But it's kind of a novelty. When I first showed it to my brother he was like, that's nuts, Doom on a phone. Never thought I'd see the day. Apple should make some kind of small controller attachment for games. It'd have to be really small though, otherwise it defeats the purpose of having a game on your phone (might as well buy a psp). it probably wouldn't work, because who wants to carry around a controller plug in. it's a shame because the processing power is there, but buttons on a touch screen is horrible UI. http://sidemission.com/
smemilyAug 23, 2010
I keep wishing they'd port The Incredible Machine. It would translate well to a small device.
Closed AccountAug 23, 2010
Remind me again why we can't do this with consoles?
eifersucht12aAug 23, 2010
I can't speak for Playstation but at least a few games on that list are available more or less unaltered on the Xbox Live Arcade. I love me some Doom and Worms on the Xbox.
themacmeisterAug 23, 2010
In what universe is Plants vs. Zombies a classic? Classic? Come on people...!!
hero0ftimeAug 23, 2010
Prince of Persia? Damn. That game was hard as hell even using a keyboard or console controller, I can't image how frustrating it would be on a phone.
alexownzyouAug 23, 2010
1. Doom
2. Myst
3. The Oregon Trail
4. The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition
5. Plants vs. Zombies
6. Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered
7. Prince of Persia Retro
8. Rogue
9. Sim City Deluxe
10. Worms
Bonus: Frotz
delamekostoneAug 23, 2010
I would have picked Broken Sword over Beneath a Steel Sky (although BaSS is cool), and probably would've included Flashback...
cdnchaozAug 23, 2010
Unfortunately, most interactive fiction and text-based adventure games aren't all that suited for the iPhone. Too much typing.
There are some Legend Entertainment games which had a GUI which may work. Stuff like Spellcasting 101, Gateway or Eric the Unready.
momsshizzleAug 23, 2010

designetAug 23, 2010
Um.,..yes they have
doom was released for the pocketPC / windowsmobile line in around 2002, worms was around on the same platform plus nokia around a year or two later, SCUMM has allowed Beneath a steel Sky, monkey island etc for the last...at a guess 5 years at LEAST on the same platforms (plus now android)
shozikuAug 23, 2010
learning is fun. Even iFans get a dose of it now and then. The PC folks had their fun 20 years ago and iFans had.... umm, macintosh. lol Glad to see yesterdays technology is still making kids smile like they've discovered fire for the first time.

designetAug 23, 2010
haven't almost all of those been available on other smartphones for YEARS ?
presume the writer is another "EVERYONE LOOK HOW COOL MY IPHONE IS" douche
This is how most DECENT writers create an article :
1)Think of cool article, eg, 101 cool things my Mustang can do
2)Compile list, eg i)Drive to shops, ii)Make awesome "PARP!" sound when pressing horn...etc
3)Check to see if these features are REALLY unique to the Mustang or if they're generic. Maybe EVERY car can do these things, maybe some other cars can do them better...as a journalist i'm supposed to know what i'm talking about so check these details...adjust title and text if necessary. Phew, almost sounded like an idiot there for a minute..
4)Submit article
In contrast, here's how to write an iPhone based article
proceed through steps 1 and 2, then jump to 4....surely NOTHING is better than the iphone, and smartphones didn't even exist until Apple had a moment of genius , why even bother to check, god i love my iPhone....don't i phone...who loves you? i do....MWAH!
