i can't imagine anyone making a live action Akira movie and it not sucking horrifically
giyadNov 7, 2010
one things for sure... m night should not direct it
seriously though, have there been any good movie remakes of anime?
dysfunctionNov 7, 2010
A few Japanese ones, mostly those done by Studio Toei. Battle Royale and Saikano are good examples. Not aware of any good American remakes of anime though.

what happened to keanu?
andyroo316Nov 7, 2010
He got old.
neondistractionNov 7, 2010
Well, first of all he's too old to play the role (assuming they keep that aspect of the story intact - when they did the dragonball movie they put goku in f**king high school).
Second, he's too busy f**king up Cowboy Bebop as Spike.

I think Max Minghella would be good:

Producers of Hollywood: Stop ruining all that is good with your misguided attempts at making money off the creativity of others whilst bastardizing said creativity into oblivion.

Am I the only one who read this title and said, "Who the hell is Zac Efron?"
thecollective00Nov 7, 2010
I have fond memories of Akira...discovering a vhs copy hidden amongst a shelve of kids animated movies in the early 90s. There was a sticker on the cover that distinctly said Not For Kids...I can only imagine some prankster placed it there hoping some unsuspecting parent would buy it thinking it would be something to occupy their kids for a few hours, hehe. Luckily I bought it myself because it looked interesting and saved some kid somewhere from a lifetime of mental trauma. Needless to say it was my gateway to anime and a lifelong love of the genre...that being said, I have very mixed feelings of hollywood stepping in and trying to adapt all these excellent titles. Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Akira...I would lament the rapage of my childhood if it hadn't been sodomized and violated in every orifice and every possible position over the last 10 years already. Now I see a headline with Zac Efron's name attached to Akira and I'm just numb. f**k it hollywood, do what you will. I still have my early 90s vhs copy to watch on opening night as tears stream down my face while I rock myself to sleep.

He could actually work! It's kind of a happy go lucky character that could add some edge to his squeaky clean thing.
It really depends on who plays Tetsuo though...
SarahDriscNov 7, 2010
oh goodness...i think zac efron is a dweeb
cmjohnson3198Nov 7, 2010
At least the character looks like him! All the girls will love it!
erikmoldenburgNov 7, 2010
This is why American remakes are garbage. I'm just glad the Oldboy remake with Will Smith died because that would have just been a sin.

Zac Efron does not look like anyone who could be named Shotaro Kaneda, Tetsuo Shima, Akira, or any of the characters in the story. This is that Dragon Ball: Evolution movie all over again (Justin Chatwin as GOKU).
laevoNov 7, 2010
I totally agree! Why can't they just have a Japanese or at least someone who looks Japanese for the role?
thecollective00Nov 8, 2010
Or, you know, not remake it.
builderbNov 8, 2010
That is an even better idea.
TheJamesGoreNov 7, 2010
He definitely has the look...
evildeadashNov 8, 2010
...for gay porn.
feragoNov 7, 2010
f**k I hate hollywood...
Akira set in manhattan, what a great idea.
satori3000Nov 7, 2010
Akira set anywhere other than Japan is a huge mistake. the film is representative of the fall out of the Second World War and the overall separation of Japan from the rest of the world. Exactly how has that experience at all occurred in the US? It's like how the original Godzilla was representative of the atomic bomb, to remove that meaning by transplanting the location to somewhere else completely negates the underlying meaning of the stories. This isn't just a race thing, it's a cultural context thing.
evildeadashNov 8, 2010
Maybe they'll change his name to Ken Ada. *puke*
delt145Nov 8, 2010
I don't know how this would work out but I love the original anime.
