youtube.com— Terry Moore found out he'd been tying his shoes the wrong way his whole life. In the spirit of TED, he takes the stage to share a better way

I too figured this one out a couple of years ago, but my solution for fixing it was (IMHO) simpler; to reverse the first part of the knot instead of the second.
Sometimes smart people are not so smart. And sometimes smart people prepare a presentation of an inferior process. Witness the Ian knot, popularized quite some time ago amongst the inter-webs.
Thanks. One of my daughter's kindergarten goals is to be able to tie shoes even though none of her shoes or boots have laces. Regardless, I'm going to teach her the Ian knot. I'd previously had the same problem as Terry Moore, but overcame it by changing the initial part of the knot instead of the loops. I now see that the Ian knot is a better solution and will use it from now on.
i would argue that a inferior knot would be the one that comes untied quicker/more frequently. just because the ian knot is the fastest, does not in any way mean that it is stronger than the one shown here.
"Orient itself down the long axis of the shoe... Transverse..." And that's why god inveted velcro shoes. You look smart and they're easy to manage. Thankfully, when I do encounter this problem, my mom is still around to resolve this issue.
That's the way I tie my shoes and people have told me my whole life that I tie my shoes "backwards." You can always tie the bows again to keep them from untying.

I finally figured this out a couple years ago. Tie with either a square knot or a granny knot. I use a square knot now.

I can dig it! but, truth be told...I still tie my laces using the bunny ears style. works for me.

Someday life will have to be so efficient that it will be illegal to tie your shoes the wrong way :)

i thought this was called the rook knot?

you can also make two loops and loop them around each other for a third way! instead of loop tie loop pull or the backward way!

I haven't finished my whole life yet, though.

If you spend a lot of time on boats, this sort of thing isn't really a revelation.

When I tie my shoes the bow is upside down. I always done it that way and don't see much of a problem with it so never corrected it.

go lefties we got it right all along! well, I think so, I'm no scientist.
cactusjack901Feb 6, 2012
Nah, I'm lefty and still got it wrong. Bringing the non-looped lace around towards you made more sense to me.

I have a theory about how a pink shirt will not help in convincing all people that you have a theory that will help all people.
