FTA: You don't have "rights" you have temporary privileges, just look up what happened to the Japanese American citizens in 1942, what happened to their "rights"?
And where do you suppose they got the list of names and addresses for these people? The folks that claim that the information will only be used for statical analysis only. Yes the Census bureau. The government bends the rules anytime it's in their interest to do so.

you only have as much freedom as you are willing to die for. most people who would stand up against absolute tyranny would stand up to the barrel of a bigger gun and get blown to pieces.
viol999Apr 18, 2011
The founding fathers knew exactly as George Carlin say's. Which is why the second amendment was put in for people to protect the other nine.
ROGU3WAV3Apr 17, 2011
Census Bureau? You mean Facebook?
saik0shinigamiApr 18, 2011
Yeah because Facebook existed in 1942, here's your sign. *hands you a placard*
ljseinfeldApr 18, 2011
(he's speaking of the *next* time people are rounded up), and he's possibly right. Cops use data mined from marketing information to find people all the time..
unattendedpancaApr 19, 2011
I wanted to dig you down twice: first for the *Whoosh* and second for quoting such a horrible schtick from a pathetic excuse of a comedian.

George Carlin will always be one of the smartest, funniest guys ever!

He saw things for how they really were, and wasn't afraid to speak out about it.
It's a shame he couldn't have lived longer. I would have loved to hear his thoughts on everything that is going on today.
norman619Apr 18, 2011
He's already spoken about all this.
blklightningApr 18, 2011
why? all that's happening today is a continuation of the things that were happening when he did this set.
tpvmanApr 18, 2011
Carlin made so much sense you have to wonder how it is that so many people don't agree with him.
kaelyiestaApr 18, 2011
I think it is easy to see. Carlin himself identified the problem near the end:
"I have a right to my opinion"
"Well I have a right to my opinion and my opinion is that you have no right to your opinion"
Carlin simply applied the principle of rights logically and universally and found a contradiction. Opinions aren't such a contradiction, but in context Carlin meant something more like 'right to follow through on ones opinion'. This can be applied to many other 'rights' like food and such, which put positive obligation(ie, slavery) on others and thus contradicts other 'rights'.
Most people disagree because they ultimately don't wish to accept reality, and instead want everyone to have access to all the goodies of utopia while blanking out the requirements to achieve it. They want 1+1=3 so they can have it all.

Carlin: the Socrates, the Twain of our day...
shingoexApr 18, 2011
From his final HBO special...I miss the old bastard :)
linuxpersonApr 18, 2011
Carlin is correct, the idea that inalienable natural rights exist in the US is the single largest political myth in the entire history of this country.
peppermintpigApr 18, 2011
Which is why one must defend their freedom and not expect politicians to do it for them. This is the predominant issue under which liberty advocates have been working, taking a lot of flak from cynics and idiots who don't think through to the consequences of inaction.

Regarding public Christmas displays: At some point, someone who worked at Rockefeller Center must have said, "Boys, I have a great idea for Christmas. Let's kill a beautiful tree that's been alive for seventy-five years and bring it to New York City. We'll stand it up in Rockefeller Plaza and conceal its natural beauty by hanging shiny, repulsive, man-made objects on it, and let it stand there slowly dying for several weeks while simpleminded children stare at it and people from Des Moines take pictures of it. That way, perhaps we can add our own special, obscene imprint to Christmas in Midtown."

kaelyiestaApr 18, 2011
Government expands just as much under the political right. They just use different rhetoric.

defiantdragonApr 18, 2011
As they should. Most people who get rich do it because they utilized the benefits of the system in place (or took advantage of said system) in order to make their riches. They should then be responsible for paying back into that system (taxes).
Right now rich folks are taking whatever they please and (in many cases, flagrantly) flipping the bird at the system that allowed them to get it in the first place.
AKA: Thieves.
