I loved the first few seasons of The Office. Seasons 1 and 2 were awesome and seasons 3 and 4 were still pretty good. Ever since then it's been pretty garbage, which is definitely part of the reason why Steve Carell is bailing on it. Barring any huge changes that are made in the show's writing, I think that this is a pretty stupid career move for Will Ferrell.
In the end, I respect the British version of The Office a lot more, because it went for quality rather than quantity. Ricky Gervais even made a joke about this at the 2010 Golden Globes :)

Oh no... please for the love of god keep him out of there.. he was funny on SNL and Anchorman, but outside of that, he's barely funny, dare I say annoying. Steve Carell's career is similar. Outside of playing Michael Scott, he comes off as typecasted and is absolutely horrible. Every episode Farell is in now will be 20 something minutes of facepalming and shaking my head.
